People who don't like any kind of music

RedPandaClaws · 18/05/2025 08:37

I used to think that music was such a universal thing, something that humans have been making and sharing for millenia, and that liking it was part of the human condition. And with so many different types of music, from pop, classical, Venezuelan nose flutes, whistling & even tapping your fingers to a beat - there is something for everyone.

But I remember reading something about someone who just hated all and any forms of music! I couldn't really believe it. And I still don't really belive it.

I can't imagine a world without music, I think it taps into a part of our brain in a way that nothing else can.
And I'm not talking about people who just don't really listen to music much, or can take it or leave it. I'm talking about those who actively avoid music.

Is there anyone out there like this who truly hates all forms of music?

I met someone like this years and years ago. Thought it wasn't possible! But she definitely didn't like any music whatsoever. She was a really clever girl as well, went to Cambridge etc and loved literature etc, so it wasn't just not enjoying cultural things. Haven't met anyone else like that since

My own Dad didn't like music. He seemed unable to hear it properly and couldn't carry a tune in his head. Couldn't sing at all and as my mother says, accurately, he simply couldn't tell a flute from a fart. He was tone deaf in its most literal form.

There are people who simply can't hear music in the same way as others. Misophonia?

I think I have this to a lesser degree. I ha e lost count of the times I have said to the DC "thatis not music, it's a noise".

I can't hold a tune, tell the difference between notes or clap a beat. Neither can I sing in tune or in key.

Some music does enthrall me but I couldn't hum it.

JohnAmendAll · 18/05/2025 12:19

I am one of them. Very seldom have music on and the number of gigs/concerts I have been to in the last 40 years I can count on the fingers of both hands (& every one of them I went because my then g/f wanted to go).

It really doesn't mean that much to me.

As a young teen, my music master at school sacked me from the school choir with the words "AmendAll, you couldn't carry a tune in a bucket."

I don't hate all types of music but there's probably more I hate than like and the stuff I like would probably be classed as old fashioned. I very, very rarely listen to music. Usually only on long car journeys.

Iloveeverycat · 18/05/2025 12:42

Me and DH have music on most days when at home. Doing house work. I listen when cooking the evening meal have always had a speaker in the kitchen. All my teens like listening to music. I hope my kids meet partners who also enjoy listening to music as much they do.

icantwaitforsummer · 18/05/2025 12:42

I love it and need to hear music every day.

I feel this though about people that say they don't like animals.

Bloody weirdos.

ZoggyStirdust · 18/05/2025 12:44

Interesting to read how other people feel about something. For me music is a huge part of my life. I play, I listen a lot and it’s pretty much always on either as background or being actively listened to.

I say listened, but sometimes it’s more like felt. You just absorb and feel the notes not just hear them. A bit like when you read a book and it’s not words on a page any more, it’s like a film.

it’s always joked that I can’t think of a song while another one is playing. It’s like the one playing is in my head and can’t be overruled.

Cactusmumma · 18/05/2025 12:44

I use to really like loud music and was even a goth back in the day, but now I can only listen to gentle acoustic music, classical, or gentle new age stuff. Loud music does physically hurt my head, especially one with a loud drum beat. Think that’s because I developed noise sensitivity through a chronic illness. My AirPods have been my favourite purchase ever, wonderful to block out the noise, especially idiots on their iPhone blaring out TikTok or whatever.

My absolute pet hate is the way cafe/restaurants pump out very loud music these days, some almost at nightclub levels. You wouldn’t have a friend over to eat and put it on that loud so don’t understand why. Plus you’d expect them to be a little more aware of ND folk who struggle to cope with it. I also have a little hearing difficulty so makes talking impossible.

MeridaBrave · 18/05/2025 12:44

I have tinnitus so avoid loud music. I can’t cope with poor reception. I can’t bear rap. I am tone deaf so can’t sing, hold a tune etc.

Mostly I am take it or leave it. Would be happy never to hear any music ever again.

SherlocksHome · 18/05/2025 13:31

I love music of my own choosing. But only when I want to. Sometimes I’d much rather be in silence.
someone at work has started playing music on Bluetooth speaker in the open plan office. It’s like nails down a chalkboard for me. I actually hate it and can’t concentrate at all. I have to put headphones on and listen to white noise or rain sounds to drown it out. It’s actually very annoying and really affects my mood at work.

My eldest DS has absolutely no interest in music. The other DS &DD are both big music fans as am I &DH

ThomasShelbysfagend · 18/05/2025 14:11

Love/hate.

Music is life to me. No matter where I am I have it in my ears.

But I cannot abide rap, club type music or those songs with the high pitched screeching voice that is computer enhanced/ changed. Sirens pr repeated noise.
It hurts my ears and head and I need to get away from it.

I know someone who dislikes any kind of music, any kind!

It moves me, it gets into my soul and brain.

It blows my mind that a small group of people, put such brilliance together to formulate something so near perfection from their own minds, imagination and thoughts.

Just listened to Pompey by Bastille, Imagine Dragons and Coldplay along side Stone Temple Pilots, Sam Fender, Audio Slave & then Sawer Hill. Just soothes my soul.
Cannot imagine a day without music!

Misophonia is when you hate hearing people eating.

CarrieLite · 18/05/2025 14:16

If I had to pick between never watching TV again or never listening to music again I'd happily never watch anything ever again. I bloody love music! So many different types and genres depending on what mood I'm in. It can change my day from being shit to feeling great with just one song.

MyKingdomForACat · 18/05/2025 14:25

Music is the food of the soul. It evokes memories and emotions. Where would we be without it. I think anyone who doesn’t “like” music must be without any depth

Rictasmorticia · 18/05/2025 08:40

I never listen to music. It is just more noise to contend with.

I rarely listen to music and often have to leave/turn it off if DH has it on…. I literally can’t cope, I have 3 kids and always around music because….. I’m a singing teacher 😆 so at home I never put it on and would rather peace! Or at most a podcast on my noise cancelling headphones.

Rictasmorticia · 18/05/2025 14:31

I think some people are noise sensitive. Fortunately DH listens to TV through headphones, otherwise I would have to go out of the room.

MsJJones · 18/05/2025 15:03

My DGF said in his old age that he had never liked music, which surprised me as my GDM was very musical and played the piano. She liked jazz and classical. My DM has always been very into 60s/70s bands, blues and so on. I also love bands/guitar type music as well as dance/pop and used to consider my CD collection part of myself but since the change to digital music I can’t get into the idea of curating my own music playlists etc. I prefer to listen to R1 or R2 as I don’t know what’s coming next. Even if I don’t like all of it, I prefer hearing new music or an older classic and being surprised by it.

The DC are both musical so it seems my DGF was the unusual one.

All music? Does none of it give you joy, or any kind of emotional response? I’m not getting at you, I’m just fascinated. Like the OP, I thought love of music was a universal human trait.

Lots of ‘universal human traits’ turn out to be ableist assumptions.

Mymanyellow · 18/05/2025 15:09

I’m not keen I have to say. I prefer the quiet. Never put the radio on, turn it off at work. Someone puts it back on. I don’t think I hear it really it’s just not on my radar.

Parker231 · 18/05/2025 15:09

I have music on every day - not a fan of opera but love jazz. Lying on a sun lounger at a beach bar today listening to a jazz band playing classic favourites - perfect day.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 18/05/2025 15:12

Yeah I don’t like it. Dh could play guitar though and I never said anything 🤷🏻‍♀️

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/05/2025 15:37

I can understand anyone really tone deaf not being interested. Music is so much a part of my life, but then I can never understand anyone being ‘passionate’ about football, or e.g. cycling.
Just as well we don’t all like the same things.

ButtCheeks · 18/05/2025 15:54

It’s so fascinating how our brains all work so differently.
There isn’t a moment in my waking life where I don’t have a song playing in my head.
I find listening to certain music akin to a spiritual experience.
I imagine someone uninterested in music is similar to those who don’t have a mind’s eye. Not an inferior trait by any means—just different to my experience.
