Any sympathy for the British drug mule in Georgia?

I was reading about this girl and actually do have a little symapthy. She is obviously vain, stupid, misguidedly ambitious but I don't know whether she is real player in the drug trade and has probably been groomed into carrying drugs by men promising her the earth.

The penalties for drug smuggling are understandably harsh on Georgia but should the UK try and get her to serve a sentence in the UK?

Culley, 18, is said to have received £550 in return for her passport information, which was then used to open a business account on the digital marketplace.

No sympathy whatsoever! And as for doing stupid things when we were young……….FFS what planet do some people live on? There’s a huge divide between drinking under age, smoking behind the bike shed, mouthing off at the neighbours AND actually thinking you can get away with smuggling any class of drugs! Silly, silly girl!

I’ll extend some pity her way but save my sympathy for the families dealing with the death of loved ones who have taken the drugs that people like her traffic around the world.

Edited

I mean, she was caught with weed, not heroin. Many people would like to see it legalized in the UK.

😴

There's always a category. Everyone must be grouped, pigeon holed.

mids2019 · 18/05/2025 15:46

But I think looking at the girl she is not a hardened cartel leader but a very naive teenager who probably was heavily influenced by male gang members into doing something criminal.

This is not an excuse but I would think if she got a 6 month jail sentence without a previous conviction she would probably never go near drugs again and if at all possible becomes a nurse. Also it was a crime of greed not malice

If she comes out with a sentence comparable to Wayne Couzens or the Southport killer then justice in my humble

Exactly. All this rubbish about 18 is not an adult blah blah blah. As I said before, my parents started working at 14. Had to take responsibility to find a job, get up on time, get to work etc etc.

I know. People were working full time at 16 not long ago. My friend started training as a nurse at 16 and was full time on a ward at 18. It's just a luxury we have in the West to prolong adolescence, but it shouldn't mean taking no personal responsibility whatsoever until you're 25.

Above all she’s someone’s daughter, sister friend and she is human (and very nieve).

It’s not ‘above all’ though. Everyone is someone’s son/daughter etc. Everyone who commits crimes and everyone who doesn’t. We still need a justice system

If someone on drugs mowed down your child with their car or stabbed them in the park then it wouldn’t be ‘above all’ that that person was somebody’s daughter.

this is not an excuse, yes, you are excusing her, or at least diminishing her apparent guilt.

Firstly, she wasn’t in the UK so that’s irrelevant. Secondly, even if was legalised, smuggling it across borders wouldn’t be. And thirdly, many wouldn’t like to see it legalised.

There were hundreds of thousands of young people who had done several years of military service and returned (or not) from the World Wars by 25. I knew one guy who was in a particularly brutal Stalag at 16 (merchant navy cabin boy, torpedoed)

Noone wants that for any young people but this (highly disputed) nonsense ignores the fact that generations of them have been fully functioning adults by late teens/early 20s (and were quite able to understand that criminal acts have consequences)

nomoreforks · 18/05/2025 15:54

I have an 18 year old and i remember being an 18 year old. They are generally very naive and silly. I think I only became an adult once I had encountered the 'real world'. We had a redundancy process at work ,when i was in my early twenties, and actually it was the best performers who were made redundant as they were paid more. The HR head said to me 'This is not university, you know' i.e. life isn't fair - suck it up. I think it takes a while to realise that life is unfair and it is very easy to mess it up. I think this girl was very silly but I know countless teens who would do similar things without thinking.I folllow a guy on Instagram and he purposely travels to dangerous places like Afganistan for the adrenaline rush. He is relying on being a man and from the West to keep him out of trouble .

InterIgnis · 18/05/2025 15:55

Wayne Couzens and the Southport killer were not under Georgia’s jurisdiction. She is.

She willingly smuggled large amounts of drugs through countries that are known to harshly sentence that crime.

She’s lucky she wasn’t caught in Thailand.

This ⬆️. People don't seem to understand that when you commit a crime in a country you're under their jurisdiction.

If she was a black kid there are plenty of you that would have a very different opinion of what she “looks like.”

Guess what, 18 year old white blonde British girls can be devious and financially
motivated any cost. She’s a criminal and she’s getting what she deserves.

ChaToilLeam · 18/05/2025 15:59

Did nobody in her family or circle of friends ask her what the hell she was getting mixed up in? She comes over as thick as mince and easily influenced. Ideal mule material really.

There's a series Nicole Kidman made at the start of her career called Bangkok Hilton. It should be compulsory viewing for any young person going abroad. However, her character was genuinely innocent unlike most of the greedy wannabe gangsters carrying huge amounts of drugs that they certainly know about.

When I was 21 I travelled alone in SE Asia and left my suitcase for a week in the chaotic left luggage at Bangkok airport. I’d seen that film and was so worried that someone might have planted drugs in my bag…. I emptied it all over the airport floor and went through everything with a fine tooth comb!

Shes young, everyone did stupid things when they were young

Please don’t infantilise women like this. She’s old enough to know what she was doing and the consequences - not just for herself but for the lives she was complicit in ruining. Now she has to face the consequences for herself. End of.

Snorlaxo · 18/05/2025 16:11

👏 to the person pointing out the 18-24 year olds who are able to function in adult society by being responsible and working in jobs.

She was doing a nursing course but posted pics of herself smoking spliffs and celebrating criminality. Fucking hell- why wouldn’t someone tell her that kind of content would lead to getting the sack or not being able to become a nurse. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I’m shocked how many call this a silly mistake. A “silly mistake” would be getting a bollocking from college for the spliff video - not being a drug mule and risking prison abroad.

I’m willing to bet that an 18 year old male (especially if he’s black) wouldn’t get the same excuses like ND or naïveté. The 18 year old black boy is Dubai who was imprisoned for underage sex is the only time I’ve seen otherwise.

Herewegoagainandagainandagain · 18/05/2025 16:16

While I think it is sad that any 18 year old has ended up in this situation, sympathy is difficult to give without further context.

She could be a silly girl who was lacking guidance/support from parents and been exploited or threatened, or she could be a stupid girl who just likes money and dicing with danger.

However she ended up where she is now, illegal drugs devastate communities, empower criminals, and fuel violence, and those who smuggle them, whether they are an 18 year old girl or a 40 year old man, need to face harsh consequences unless there has been significant extenuating circumstances.

? What has this to do with price of fish?

Whatever many people might like to see happen in the UK, if she had been caught attempting to import 14kg of illegal drugs into the UK she would still be in prison! The UK does not ignore the importation of illegal drugs based on what "many people" might like to see legalised; and I doubt that Georgia gives a flying fuck what people would like to see in the UK.

It's really very simple. Do people expect "furriners" to observe UK laws in the UK? Because there's plenty of threads about deporting "illegal aliens" and nobody suggests they are young, stupid or naive (even when some of them clearly ARE under 18!). We need to "stop the boats" because them damned people don't respect our laws. It's pretty disgusting that some people in this country seem to think we should allow Sharia law, how dare they? We should have tougher prisons? Oh, and let's also bring back hanging... Etc. Etc

It is rank British arrogance that when British citizens are arrested abroad for breaking the law then people and the media are up in arms at the audacity of them "furrin" countries for daring to hold our citizens to their laws.

Never would have happened in the days of the Empire because we'd have sent in the Navy to teach them a lesson in manners.

CalicoPusscat · 18/05/2025 16:19

I don't think she's naive. I think that she's thick and thought it was glamorous and exciting.

There, that's the bitchiest thing I've said all day.
