My 5 year old ate a whole pizza

It’s been a busy and stressful week. Decided to have a lazy night and chucked some frozen pizza (Buitoni) in the oven and put on a movie.

I cooked 2 pizzas and left them in the kitchen. DC had small plates, and we paused the movie if they wanted to fetch more pizza. I didn’t keep a check on how much they were having, they generally stop when they’re full.

My plan was to eat the leftovers for my dinner. However, there was one slice and 8 bits of crust. DD (5.5) doesn’t eat the crust, so I know she ate a whole pizza. DS (8.5) ate 7 full slices.

I’m a bit surprised that they ate so much. Is this normal?

That's a lot, they were probably thirsty as well with the heat but filled up on pizza by mistake. A goodfellas deep pan is 1000 calories alone which shocked me tbh
Think of it as a one off Friday night binge, at least it wasn't all sugar, get them to hydrate better tomorrow.

foreverblowingbubbless · 16/05/2025 19:27

You didn't notice what your 5 year old was eating ?

RatOfTheHighway · 16/05/2025 19:27

I think as an occasional thing it’s ok at their age, they were obviously hungry. My ds7 is really good at regulating his eating based on his actual hunger, rather than just over eating for the sake of it (because it tastes nice etc) so it always balances out when I look at the big picture. My ds4 is the opposite. I suppose you only know which category your children fit in as to whether it’s worth worrying about, you definitely don’t want to make a big thing of it and make them feel ashamed as I think that can backfire

Don’t sweat it for a one off. You say she generally stops when she’s full. Maybe she did, and it just so happened that was a pizza’s worth.

Picklepower · 16/05/2025 19:29

My 6 year old can easily eat a whole pizza. What's the actual issue?

ThatFancyOpalCrab · 16/05/2025 19:30

Don't worry about this, just make sure they're drinking plenty tomorrow!

AstonUniversityPotholeDepartment · 16/05/2025 19:30

How much pizza do they normally eat? As a one-off, don't worry. They may well be about to have growth spurts.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 16/05/2025 19:31

It's not something to panic about, they were hungry and ate a decent sized meal.

Not sure what the issue is tbh??

imisscashmere · 16/05/2025 19:32

I also don’t see what the concern is.

DonningMyHardHat · 16/05/2025 19:33

My kids are sat with a pizza each currently (they are 4 and 6). 6 year old will definitely finish his, 4 year old might leave a couple of slices. They are homemade but tbh they are still covered in cheese and full of olive oil so hardly health foods. It’s a Friday night, and one child has ARFID so I’m just pleased he’s eating something with a vague nod to greenery (fresh basil).

Piginapokie · 16/05/2025 19:34

I was mainly shocked she could fit it all in!

As a family we generally eat very well- veg with every meal, fruit as a snack etc. We get a takeaway every 2-3 months. This was definitely a one off and not a pattern.

librathroughandthrough · 16/05/2025 19:36

There’s your answer then op. It is a novelty- they were enjoying it as a treat

Botanybaby · 16/05/2025 19:39

They will be fine
They were just hungry and it means you get to order a takeaway now

Ignore morons with "you didn't keep track of your child's every mouthful" comments

Clearly little ones a pizza fan hehe I know what you'll be doing for her birthday

KnickerFolder · 16/05/2025 19:55

A standard 12 inch pizza?!!

That seems pretty normal for a 5YO to me, especially if she left the crusts. I would imagine most 5YOs could polish off a whole pizza if they enjoy it and it’s a treat.

What are you concerned about?!! I wouldn’t serve a 5YO a whole pizza as an everyday portion but it’s fine as an occasional treat 🤷‍♀️

IndianaIndiana · 16/05/2025 19:56

My 4 year old polishes off a pizza and dough balls and an ice cream every Friday!

I do sometimes look at him and wonder where all the food goes but he never stops moving so there's my answer!

Atarin · 16/05/2025 19:58

My 4yr old can eat more than me! I wouldn’t worry about it. I find some days they eat the bare minimum, and others they eat everything. They’re a normal weight, active, eat a wide range of food. I’ve never really given it much thought

So whats the issue?

coxesorangepippin · 16/05/2025 20:26

Growing? Hungry from running around??

Perfect 👌 😃

LaurieFairyCake · 16/05/2025 20:32

Growth spurt

say nothing and don’t worry

I had a growth spurt at 7 where I ate 2 tins of tomato soup and 6 slices of buttered bread. I heard my mum whisper something to my gran about ‘getting fat’ (was skinny as a rake). She told her to ignore it, literally grew 2 inches in a month.

bodies are AMAZING

dottydodah · 16/05/2025 20:36

I think DC often eats more than we think they will! You say she left the crusts which means she only had about 2/3 of it.If shes been running about in the fresh air she has built up an appetite which is good

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/05/2025 20:44

Unless they are huge pizzas I don’t see the issue

my 8yr will eat a pizza herself

sometimes leaves some slices

Theunamedcat · 16/05/2025 20:45

Me too and I'm full of regret and pizza

SwanOfThoseThings · 16/05/2025 20:49

Be warned, OP, sooner or later people will start turning up on the thread to say one individual pizza feeds their whole family for two weeks 😃

thejadefish · 16/05/2025 20:58

If they usually stop when they're full I wouldn't worry and it's not like you do this every night! According to family legend when my brother was 2 years old he ate an entire roast chicken by himself. Allegedly. I'm assuming there were no sides/roasties with that...
