Help me decide where to relocate to in semi retirement

DH and I are starting to think about where we might like to move to as we downsize and move into part time work / part retirement. We won't be moving for 3-4 years but would like to use this time investigate options.

We currently live in the Midlands and are not likely to be restricted to a location by adult children or ageing parents.

We are looking for:

Large town or small city
Theatre, cinema and decent restaurants
Good train connections
Likely to need to be within 3-4 hours of London for occasional trips for future work / consultancy roles
Within an hour of the sea (this is super important as we are currently 3 hours from a beach and this is the only thing we don't like about where we live)
Able to get a 3 bed detached house for £450-£500k

Other things we like about where we live:

Active social groups - chess and tennis clubs for DH, book club and history society for me,
Festivals - our city has loads - food, fringe, literature, jazz, folk plus a large arts festival

So far we have shortlisted Norwich, Salisbury, Lincoln and Chester to look at.

Where else should we add to our list?

I was going to suggest Norwich but see that's on your list already!
It really is a lovely city with loads going on

SwedishEdith · 13/05/2025 21:39

I was thinking Chester as I was reading. But, if you want literary festivals, maybe Cheltenham or Harrogate?

Mum2jenny · 13/05/2025 21:39

Nottingham seems to meet your needs

Sassybooklover · 13/05/2025 22:05

I love Norwich, but then I'm probably biased as my Dad is originally from Norfolk!! Salisbury is a lovely compact city.

notatinydancer · 13/05/2025 22:32

Folkestone ?

sakura06 · 13/05/2025 22:36

Chester is fab and North Wales beaches are beautiful. 2.5 hours to London too (although direct trains are less frequent now and are very expensive).

Canterbury is nice too, but you might struggle with that budget. Winchester?

GOODCAT · 14/05/2025 08:20

Salisbury is a good hour from the beach. Personally I would aim for further south and closer to the coast. Salisbury does have a good bus service to Bournemouth though. Ringwood might fit your bill better and that is close to the New Forest too.

Not quite sure on house prices but Highcliffe, Mudeford and Christchurch would all be good areas and are well served for public transport. I appreciate that these are less good for London but personally I would prioritise what you want for actual retirement given that it is only a few years.

Nottingham is most definitely not an hour from the sea.

JohnAmendAll · 14/05/2025 08:55

I was going to say Newbury. It's an hour to the sea (Southampton), but that's probably not the sort of sea you mean, plus you'll not get a detached house for your budget in a nice area.

BestIsWest · 14/05/2025 09:03

Cardiff? 2 hours from London and you can be on a good beach in under an hour.

Bluevelvetsofa · 14/05/2025 09:13

South coast.

Chichester is 90 minutes from London, has the coast and South Downs on the doorstep, Festival Theatre, links to Brighton, Southampton, Portsmouth. Lots of local events in the surrounding towns and villages, with sporting activities, museums, book clubs, Goodwood, Weald and Downland Museum, Arundel castle and festivals, Amberley museum and lots of walks, both coast and inland.

A three bed detached house in the surrounding area is certainly possible for 450-500K.

EllasNonny · 14/05/2025 09:15

York
2 hours on the train to London
An hour from the coast.

BorntoDillyDally · 14/05/2025 09:15

Woodbridge in Suffolk. We only live across the border in Essex but it's where we want to retire to in a couple of years time. There is always something going on there, it's by the water and the coast is not far away at all.

PeachTrifle · 14/05/2025 09:17

Bristol? Lots of culture, diverse, easy to get to the coast and fast trains to London.

Crikeyalmighty · 14/05/2025 09:19

exeter/newton abbott is a good call although pushing it on budget, I would also say Salisbury , Leigh on sea or Cardiff - Norwich is great too if location not an issue , I’m not keen on Portsmouth or Southampton or Bournemouth - but you may feel different and they fit the bill

Another vote for Cardiff from me!

Crikeyalmighty · 14/05/2025 09:20

@PeachTrifle I think they would struggle on budget for a decent area

JurgenKloppsTeeth · 14/05/2025 09:23

Exeter is fairly £ but it’s a great city and lots of great beaches nearby. I’d also consider Poole - direct line to London but also v close to Bournemouth, Studland and the Jurassic coast beaches.

Bournemouth itself is pretty grim but Christchurch etc is a good suggestion. Traffic can be awful though.

Lymington probably not doable on your budget but worth a look.

MissCharlotteLutterell · 14/05/2025 09:25

Another one saying put Cardiff on your list. Loads going on as a capital city, it's on the coast with beaches easily accessible, and is a great place to live with good transport links. Does rain more than the Midlands but it's also sunnier, which you might not expect.

Crikeyalmighty · 14/05/2025 09:33

We live in Bath OP but I am a big fan of Cardiff - ( only 42 mins away on train for us) lots going on, great shopping, attractive and whilst not cheap should be within budget - or look at nice areas on edge like Rhiwbina, Whitchurch, cowbridge, penarth . It’s one of our frequent days out along with Salisbury - we’ve done Salisbury down to Christchurch in 48 mins ( driving) -

Crikeyalmighty · 14/05/2025 09:38

You could also consider the Newcastle /whitley Bay area if location not an issue OP - lovely beaches, lots going on, very friendly and you get a lot for your money in some areas - train also quick and good and under the times you mentioned. I’ve got a very soft spot for the area but would want a ‘nice’ area .

BarnacleBeasley · 14/05/2025 09:47

Lancaster has all of this.

Cyclebabble · 14/05/2025 09:57

Live in Norfolk and highly recommend it. Norwich is good, but living to the west of the City (Wymondham/Attleborugh) allows access to the A11 and also easier access to the Suffolk as well as Norfolk coasts. Places like Aldborough have a good cultural vibe.

Came on to suggest Tynemouth/Whitley Bay. There are trains to London that take under 3h and are good for working on. A day trip to London for a client meeting is viable.
