Help me decide where to relocate to in semi retirement

DH and I are starting to think about where we might like to move to as we downsize and move into part time work / part retirement. We won't be moving for 3-4 years but would like to use this time investigate options.

We currently live in the Midlands and are not likely to be restricted to a location by adult children or ageing parents.

We are looking for:

Large town or small city
Theatre, cinema and decent restaurants
Good train connections
Likely to need to be within 3-4 hours of London for occasional trips for future work / consultancy roles
Within an hour of the sea (this is super important as we are currently 3 hours from a beach and this is the only thing we don't like about where we live)
Able to get a 3 bed detached house for £450-£500k

Other things we like about where we live:

Active social groups - chess and tennis clubs for DH, book club and history society for me,
Festivals - our city has loads - food, fringe, literature, jazz, folk plus a large arts festival

So far we have shortlisted Norwich, Salisbury, Lincoln and Chester to look at.

Where else should we add to our list?

I was also thinking Chester as I read it

EdisinBurgh · 14/05/2025 11:13

What’s your preference for climate?

Can be a difference between north and south.

Radiatorvalves · 14/05/2025 11:14

Chichester would be my first thought.

I was thinking Chester as I was reading. But, if you want literary festivals, maybe Cheltenham or Harrogate?

You won’t get a detached house in Cheltenham on that budget ( also it’s about as far from the sea as you can get in England)

This is a good point - OP would need to quite like pissing rain for my suggestion of Lancaster, though in its defense it does have literature, music, jazz festivals etc., as well as a history society, tennis club, chess club etc. and it's only a few miles inland.

I moved from London to the Kent coast (Deal) 3 years ago and I work part-time. I love living by the sea and it is a friendly small town.

You can get a house for your budget in places like Broadstairs, Folkestone, Deal, Ramsgate or Margate. Canterbury as well (you can easily get to Whitstable from there).

All have direct trains to London.

Folkestone, Margate and Deal all have a good art scene.

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 14/05/2025 13:07

I love Chester but weather is noticeably better down South.

Chichester, Hove, Arundel, Hastings.

On the other hand, I am from the south coast and have moved north and I find summers down there too hot these days.

Doublebubblegum · 14/05/2025 13:33

Edinburgh - Portobello

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 14/05/2025 13:38

I'd not recommend Winchester, it is dying and looking tatty around the edges. Very expensive, lots of homeless in what shop doorways have survived.

Cyclebabble · 14/05/2025 16:04

In Norfolk generally the weather is better than the rest of the UK- rainfall particularly is quite low. If you are entering semi-retirement and will be spending more time at home solar also works well here. At the moment I am heating hot water, running my electric car, covering all my electric appliances and cooker and still making a profit.

MrsKeats · 14/05/2025 16:44

Chester

Splendud · 14/05/2025 21:14

Thanks everyone, have added some extra places to our list.

Had discounted Cardiff and Edinburgh despite liking both places as we assumed we might struggle to fit in being English. Will take another look

Cardiff / Vale of Glamorgan. Being English really isn’t an issue (unless you’re planning a flagpole with a 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 in your front garden!).

Definitely not planning any flag waving. We'd want to embrace the local area. Not sure my rubbish language abilities would stretch to learning Welsh though!

Cardiff is a very multicultural city. Your lack of Welsh won’t matter.

The Vale of Glamorgan is less multicultural but has some beautiful beaches - again your lack of Welsh won’t matter.

Happyholidays78 · 14/05/2025 21:58

Taunton has good transport links & not far from the coast, also Bristol, Portishead or Clevedon.

hjor20 · 14/05/2025 22:15

Lincoln is lovely, daily direct trains to London, just over an hour to the seaside, depending where you want to be there are beautiful villages just outside but with good transport links into the city.

Keepingthingsinteresting · 14/05/2025 22:36

I’ve lived in Chester and Salisbury. Chester is quite run down nowadays but may tick most of your boxes, Salisbury is “quirky” but you may struggle with that budget in the nicer areas (none of it is bad though).Frome might be worth a look too.

How about Ely in Cambridgeshire, nice little cathedral city, 1hr 20 direct trains to King’s Cross and lovely countryside. Nearest beach is exactly an hour.

I will second PPs suggestion on Woodbridge, which is gorgeous. Otherwise what about

Thankyouforthemusic · 14/05/2025 22:46

Canterbury

Coffeebreakneeds · 14/05/2025 23:01

Devon. Beaches all close by, good train links and London 3-4 hours depending on where you want to go to. Cornwall is a day trip and they have the best beaches!

Zanatdy · 14/05/2025 23:05

Chester is a great city, just over 2hrs to London too.

maximalistmaximus · 14/05/2025 23:05

Edinburgh.
the train is 4 hours 22 mins to King’s Cross
biggest festival
numerous Michelin restaurants
beach
endless social opportunities

And dreadful weather, horrendous traffic and a council that has given up the ghost as far as public services are concerned. Also very high house prices.

SwedishEdith · 15/05/2025 00:43

Lincoln has just elected Andrea Jenkyns so would be a complete swerve.
