Thank you everyone.Im gong to do I think Monday to Wednesday and then Thursday to Sunday. I think it will help with food costs!

This is brilliant. I can’t believe I haven’t thought of it OP. I’m with Tesco and generally book a weekly slot, but it either goes off before I get round to using it or mostly we run out of certain things.
So we end up going out to the shops anyway, either small local ones which cost a fortune for 3 things, or we spend precious weekend time traipsing DS to the supermarket, do a medium/big sized shop that is then too much stuff to justify another £50 Tesco order so I keep cancelling the home delivery orders I pay the monthly fee for 🤦🏻‍♀️
Plus we have a really small under counter fridge.

I’m going to try this. We are only a family of 3 but £50 will be easily reached twice a week, it’s easy to just add some dog food or washing powder or something if we don’t need loads that week.

Reading this back I’ve realised how stupid I sound and how much I need to get my shit together! Blush

Yes, thank you. I'm aware of the £50 minimum. The way posters were talking earlier in the thread made it sound as if there wasn't an extra charge if you had the delivery pass. Maybe for other supermarkets or maybe I got the wrong end of the stick.

I assume they spend enough money each week that they spend £50 (or whatever their supermarket minimum is) ach time.

Tesco have been brilliant for me since before Covid through various health issues including the most recent one (stroke) so I wouldn't consider changing, but I do wish the minimum wasn't £50.

Online delivery has been a godsend even just so I don't have to drag younger DC around the supermarket. For someone like yourself with health issues it would be a lifesaver I'm sure! I was also extremely annoyed when they raised the minimum spend to £50! I probably need to tally up our top up shops to see if a second delivery would actually be cheaper, but we are fortunate to live near a Sainsbury's local and a Co-op that I pass on the way back from work/school run so it might actually be more inconvenient to wait in for a delivery.......

Agreed. We tend to spend between £80 -£100 each shop anyway.

My Tesco pass is around £8 a month, though I tend to use clubcard points anyway

BrieAndChilli · 11/05/2025 19:31

We get hello fresh delivered on a sunday. Thats 5 meals for mon-fri
kids have school lunches and breakfast in the week is just cereal or toast

i do a shop on a sat morning when i drop DD to work. I get the food for the weekend and any evtras needed for the week - fruit etc

doodleschnoodle · 11/05/2025 19:39

I’ve just gone through and added up what we spent at the (expensive) Co-op down the road doing top-up shops in the last month and it is not good so we are officially trying two Tesco shops a week!

AliBaliBee1234 · 11/05/2025 20:00

I do this and yes! Saves a fortune on top up shops

Springtime97 · 11/05/2025 20:03

I have a delivery pass and sometimes do every 5 days sometimes longer.

it helps me from the point of view of I don’t have to think as far in advance, I can check what I have left and then make a meal plan so a little bit less waste.

I don’t think it’s cheaper tho if I do once a week I only buy berries once and it’s one to apples and banana etc for tale end of the week. Ditto some of the nicer snacks…

Onelifeonly · 11/05/2025 20:07

We live within walking distance of several supermarkets so we do lots of top up shops (DH mostly as he works from home). But that's annoying and not as efficient as two deliveries so I might try that as we pay for yearly delivery with Tescos.

Whenwouldyougethelp · 11/05/2025 20:16

Omg what an incredible idea! So I'm with ocado ( after telling them off about mnhq debacle and threatening to cancel)... I'm midweek slot so I could potentially get two delivered with them and or get another supermarket 🤔😲.I spend a lot on top up shops so this could really help.

KillingEvesbestmate · 10/05/2025 19:55

I have the delivery pass.
I was thinking Monday to Wednesday. And then Thursday to Sunday.

If you eat a lot of fresh food then I think that’s ok

bge · 11/05/2025 20:18

I’m like so many others, actually bamboozled by this. Why haven’t I thought of it? Why do I two one mammoth weekly shop then go to the coop mid week for milk and yogurt? I’ve finally paid for the Tesco delivery pass and I will do two deliveries from now on. Feel like I’m overcoming decades of indoctrination about the big shop 😁

SummerIce · 11/05/2025 20:20

We do two deliveries a week. We have the delivery pass with Ocado and it just makes life so much easier to only think about what I need over the next few days rather than plan a week’s shopping. And as PP said, your shopping doesn’t go off!

Oh do be quiet !

WednesdaysChild25 · 11/05/2025 20:21

I shop once a week Sainsbury’s Saturday am saver slot 6-10am £1

Actually no, it’s not. Aside from the value of my time, I’m more likely to spend a lot more in the supermarket after walking down the aisles than when I shop online and I’m shopping with a list in mind. So my arse saves money by staying at home.

This really made me laugh because it’s so simple and obvious but feels totally revolutionary. I told DH earlier about it and at first he looked at me like I was trying to take over a neighbouring country and then realisation dawned on him that it’s a genius idea.

Can we all agree to meet back here in a week to discuss?!

Everytime I've looked at an Ocado delivery, the minimum has come up as £90, does it change from time to time or is that your minimum?

blueskiesandsun · 11/05/2025 20:38

Yes! Bigger family here and it helps to spread out the labour through the week. Better for fridge space and visibility of ingredients in our compact kitchen.

We do either Sun/Mon and then Thurs/Fri depending on activities. Definitely waste less food, and less midweek packed lunch panic.

DH and I split the cooking week in half, so one of us is responsible ordering for one of the shops each. This requires good stock checking before ordering, but otherwise works fine.

Tesco delivery pass here, and just treated ourselves with an upgrade to anytime. Will be nice to have the option of same day for particularly busy weeks.

Pmsruiningmylife · 11/05/2025 20:42

I’ve been thinking of doing this too. Have only just got back into online ordering but if I get a delivery on a Sunday by a Wednesday there’s no fresh fruit or anything left. Depends on the minimum spend I suppose.

I’d love to be able to go to the supermarket and choose my own produce but due to arthritis, I cannot walk more than a few steps without severe pain. Not everyone is lazy to use deliveries!

bge · 11/05/2025 20:52

In general deliveries take loads of cars off the road, are far more environmentally friendly, provide jobs, and leave the shops less empty for those who like to go in. What’s not to love

Pmsruiningmylife · 11/05/2025 22:18

Feeling positively saintly. Not only have Asda just tonight delivered this weeks shop but I now have my next two half week shops all done. So glad you posted this OP. Now the second half of the week doesn’t need to be so ropey. I was spending about £60ish on the weekly online shop then definitely another £20/30 (don’t want to think about it) on top ups so it will definitely make sense financially especially when I’m less likely to sneak in bars of choc when doing top up shops.

The supermarkets will be rubbing their hands at the extra slots being booked tonight after this … then not so much when we spend half as much on each one Grin

The £90 minimum is only at Christmas.

It’s a £40 minimum for an ordinary shop. We have no issues hitting that twice a week.
