What do you do during the day on a day off?

I'm off today. I've done a wash, tidied upstairs hoovered and mopped, popped to the shops, had my lunch. I've got 2 hours until I leave for school run. I'll probably have a cuppa, watch an hour of TV then sort some washing.

What do you do?

PSA I know it's a luxury to have a day off in the week. I work part time.

I have never had a day off without my children. But if I ever did, I think I'd go for a run, do some housework, maybe go for a coffee or some lunch by myself in peace. Bliss!

SardinesOnGingerbread · 07/05/2025 12:45

So, usually, gym, go round the shops for household bits and sometimes a browse in the charity shops, walk back (everything in my town is very near). Put a wash on. Clean bathroom. Put a film on and iron until film finished. If it's a short film, ironing doesn't get finished. Bath, buff feet and put on moisturiser and cling film for half an hour. Tidy house a little. Water all my plants (I have a lot). Browse Mumsnet. Sometimes sort out some bits to declutter/rearrange a drawer. Cook dinner and a cake.

I work compressed hours these days, 5 days in 4. My DCs are at uni, my DH works, I WFH. On my day off I catch up on any housework and life admin, go to a gym class, long walk with the dog, car in for it's service etc, help my 82 year old Dad with tasks/appointments if needed, attend appointments. It's always a busy day but feels satisfying to get loads done and have a mid-week break from work.

Sunshineclouds11 · 07/05/2025 12:50

Today I've;
hung a wash out
been to the shops
been to the tip

im now chilling before tidying up and putting washing away.

Meadowfinch · 07/05/2025 12:53

Go for a run, amble around the shops, give myself a pedicure ready for summer sandals, go for a swim, try out a new recipe, mow the lawn and do some gardening.

This time of year wash down the garden furniture and put it out.

Clean the car, check washer level, tyre pressures and oil.

Lots of things 😎

If such a miracle ever happened, I'd have a really long nap!

TheCurious0range · 07/05/2025 12:57

I have every Monday off , I drop ds at school, go to the gym, come back hang the washing out, usually do jobs that are easier done without him around, clean bathroom, tip run, cleaning the windows, cleaning the inside of the fridge, sort anything else I need to , holiday payments, arranging tradesmen, paying bills, pick up any parcels drop any returns, I always book dentist and hair appointments for me on Mondays, pick him up from school take him to gymnastics, get dinner on while he's there, pick him up come home dinner, homework, bath, bed, DH has Fridays and between school runs goes to the gym does some washing, cleans the house top to bottom (other than the bathroom which I do), takes the bins out, he does pick up then takes DS to swimming lesson, I get back while they are out and put dinner on. I usually do the food shop on a Thursday night while dh does pick up to bedtime routine. It means our weekends aren't filled with chores and we get family time

monktasmic · 07/05/2025 13:00

the cleaners come and the shopping arrives. I take the dog out for long walk while they are in.go to the Gym. Then coffee / lunch with girlfriends - movie or an art gallery. I don’t do chores as such.

Today, I got kids off to school, then took a shower and had breakfast. Hung out the washing next and walked the dog. Then I had therapy and therapy recovery for an hour after. Lunch and dog walk and feed and water the chickens soon. I have some plants to put in at some point then by then my youngest will be home.

TwoLeggedGrooveMachine · 07/05/2025 13:08

Meet up with a friend who shop works PT. Sea swim, long walk with podcast, batch cook, sit in the garden with a book, research and book family holiday.

angelopal · 07/05/2025 13:12

Normally catch up on washing and tidy up. Go for a swim or meet a friend.

I have a day off on 30 May - I plan on making myself a delicious breakfast of dreams, getting my hair done in the early noon, meet my sister and brother for sushi lunch and then, maybe, go to the cinema by myself. Or just sit in my garden to read.

EmotionalSupportBlanket · 07/05/2025 17:18

Usually it's household tasks, but today I met a friend in London and went for lunch. It was a lovely day out of the norm and one that I should definitely do more often!

henlake7 · 07/05/2025 17:34

Mainly dog walking, exercising, reading and gaming.
If Im doing housework then it doesnt count as a day off!

Fatmumslim01 · 07/05/2025 19:05

Following for ideas as I feel I need to be more organised with my days off!

I have 2 days off in the week and 4 children all school age.

I usually do things like a top up shop, charity shop dropoff and buy more tbh! Hoover the whole house, clean the bathroom, mop the kitchen etc. do as many loads of laundry as I can so less to do on a weekend. Fold and put away the never ending piles of laundry, list things on vinted etc.

All sounds very busy but I also feel like I'm chasing my tail alot of the time!

daffodilandtulip · 07/05/2025 19:09

Mine are teens/uni, and I currently work 50 hours Monday to Friday. From September, I'm doing 40 hours Tuesday to Friday.

My dream is of a dog walk while all the idiots are at work, a trip to the gym in off peak hours, pottering in charity shops or house shops, reading my book, sitting in a coffee shop and people watching, sitting in silence at home with treat teas. Can't bloody wait.

daffodilandtulip · 07/05/2025 19:10

Also I used to be really crafty but never have time anymore. I'll be finding new crafts too.

I have never had a day off without my children.

Maybe make it a goal for this year? x

Gorbie · 07/05/2025 19:24

Sounds pretty much like my day, I a shift worker nights and days, so I've been off today. Took kids to school, went to the gym, home shower and dressed, hung washing out, cleaned out and tidied under stairs cupboard, hoovered upstairs, went to hospital (where I work) for a quick vaccine, popped to morrisons. After lunch hung next load of washing out, cleaned bathrooms, mopped all floors, quick cuppa with some tv, walked to school, dinner for kids, shopping delivery put away, bathed kids, made our dinner and now I'm chilling.
Working nightshift tomorrow so jobs done today so I can chill bit tomorrow then Friday I will sleep while kids are in school but housework is caught up with

dontunderstandguys · 07/05/2025 19:30

Mine are teens and I have a cleaner (so I don’t use it for cleaning either). Yesterday I made myself a packed lunch and walked for 2 1/2 hrs then coffee and a read in a nice cafe, train back and home in time for teens post school. Sometimes I meet a friend for lunch or play tennis. Also use it for hair / dentist / beauty appointments or in winter I go to the cinema if there’s something good on.

don’t want to jinx it ‘but thanks’ 🙏 I worked really hard when I went back after ten years at home with the kids and only got this level of balance last year. I feel lucky every week.

It's something to aim for! Maybe when my children are at secondary school I can arrange my 32 hours over 4 days instead of 5.
