I am baffled as to how these two men do not realise how ludicrous their defences sound despite the obvious evidence against them.

The judge must be exasperated!

I saw it on the news. My what a fuss. Of course it's vandalism and the men should be punished, But talking about devastation amd it's like losing a member of the family. Total madness. It's a tree fgs.

myplace · 09/05/2025 14:04

The thing is, it was very deliberate and wanton. They knew the significance of the tree or they wouldn’t have driven 30miles to target it.

They deliberately chose to do something for maximum shock impact, to make themselves feel powerful It’s such a bullying mentality, so spiteful.

They may be surprised by just how very outraged people are, but they knew what they were doing.

On the bright side, there will be a wider appreciation for the significance of trees now.

It's not just a tree. It's the most photographed tree in the UK. People travelled from all over to see it.

It also wasn't just the tree, it damaged the wall.

You perhaps need to try and understand how symbolic and much loved this particular tree was.

To me this utterly pointless act represented all that is wrong with society, two thick, selfish individuals wanting to ruin something completely harmless just because they could..

I'm so glad they've been found guilty and yep, over the moon if their businesses are in ruin. It would have almost been understandable if they'd done it for a bet and were mortified in restropsect but they haven't even got the intelligence or empathy for that.

What a strange and cold attitude!

There was someone on another thread who said that it 'was just a tree' she got her arse handed to her on a plate too...

Choux · 09/05/2025 14:16

Sentencing isn’t till July but they will remain in custody until then, the judge ruled, noting that Graham has already been in custody “for his own protection” since December. Mrs Justice Lambert also remanded Carruthers, saying there “is a substantial risk” he will fail to surrender as well as a risk to his own welfare since his identity is widely known.

Hkgyvd · 09/05/2025 14:20

Sad to say that the UK is rife with sub-par, not very intelligent but very arrogant men just like this who go through life struggling to perform the basics of decent human existence but feeling overly confident in doing exactly what they want regardless of impact on anyone else.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/05/2025 14:27

I read that they ‘thought it’d be a bit of a laugh’.
What a pair of thick, waste of space lowlifes.

pengwing · 09/05/2025 14:34

I just honestly don’t understand why they did it. They are adults it’s such a strange thing to do.

powershowerforanhour · 09/05/2025 14:36

Pair of knuckle dragging sandcastle kickers. Hope they get the book thrown at them. And are forced to plant hundreds of trees in the pissing rain for weeks on end.

If you look into the age of some trees and what unique eco systems they provide you might see that although it is ‘just a tree’ to us it is a hundred plus year old habitat.

Or you could watch the scene at the start of Arachnophobia where all the spiders and butterflies fall out of the tree 🌲

Culturally, there have always been significant, cultural, and spiritual trees in the U.K. from Pagan times till now. Robin Hoods tree in Nottingham Forest is another example.

HowManyMintCLubsIsTooMany · 09/05/2025 14:51

Are you related to the defendants?!

MoistVonL · 09/05/2025 14:59

The judge is clearly DEEPLY unimpressed, with her comments about "serious risk of substantial jail time."

Carruthers in particular is a piece of work. There was a thread here about a woman not being happy with her DH flying to spain to see his hospitalised mum when she had a 6 week old baby. Carruthers' new baby was 5 days old when he swanned off to cut down a tree during a storm.

His poor partner - she must be glad to be rid of the arsehole.

Isthiscorrect · 09/05/2025 15:28

@Viviennemaryto you it might just be a tree. To most people it’s something rather special.

Aside from that why is it ok for them to damage something that isn’t theirs? This attitude is exactly why people like them damage property that isn’t theirs - bus shelters, park benches you name it. Mindless damage because according to you it’s ’just a tree’/ just something else not owned by them.

I feel I’m not explaining this very well but to me it’s symbolic of how much people don’t care what they to to stuff that isnt theirs.

Penko25 · 09/05/2025 15:33

I think it’s all a bit OTT. They haven’t killed someone. It’s a tree. I have some empathy for the older one. His mum walked out on the family. His Dad then hanged himself. He has no friends. I think he needs help & some compassion tbh.

sally037 · 09/05/2025 15:37

I think, in reality, it's the kind of arrogance that comes from there being no repercussions. It happens all the time near me - nice area, low crime, generally affluent. But, there's a group of little shits who go out stealing things - motorbikes, lawn ornaments, signs from businesses... and, no one does a single thing about it.

Now, the police just don't have the time and resources - I somewhat understand that. But, what gets me is the local Facebook page, whenever some posts saying they found a burnt-out bike on their dog walk or they had to remove Tesco trolleys that had been upturned and strewn on the main road or that a bat house for hibernating bats has been burnt to the ground killing all the bats, banging on about "well, we were all young once" and "didn't you ever have any fun"... Like, yes, I had fun as a teen and I never once set someone else's property on fire, never once put someone's life in danger and never told expensive items from strangers - ever. And, if I had, 99.9% of my parent's generation would've absolutely lost it with me and not one would've thought "nah, kids will be kids, let them commit arson".

I have no doubt that these two numpties have been doing this kind of shit for too long, unchallenged and under the guise of "let them have their fun". But, now they've grown up, struck the wrong target and learnt too late that actions have consequences.

AwakeNotThruChoice · 09/05/2025 15:37

Walked the Pennine Way last week. Well started it early April. Walked past Sycamore Gap. Would have been lovely to see the tree as it should have been. And not a stump. Such a beautiful location. Beggars belief why some people feel the need to spoil things for others.

feellikeanalien · 09/05/2025 14:00

I particularly liked the explanation as to why one of them was shown by his phone data to be near the scene on the day the tree was cut down. Apparently he wanted to take his wife and their new born baby for a meal in Newcastle (from Cumbria) so she could have a break.

Driving for hours in shit weather to have a meal somewhere that is going to take you at least 2 hours there and back with a newborn sounds like such a plausible excuse!!!

They certainly don't seem like the sharpest tools in the box.

That one is straight out of the Dominic Cummings playbook.

Please read up about trees. The mother tree will communicate to other trees through a network of fungi to share information. They host incredible eco systems.
To destroy something so important and beautiful shows an absolute poverty of mind. I pity and despise people that think it's okay to destroy in this manner.

I've seen that poster say pretty much the exact same thing on two other threads about sycamore gap. I think they're just riling people on purpose tbh.

FetidMoppet · 09/05/2025 15:47

Spiteful is a good word for it. They clearly did know the significance of it because otherwise why would they have targeted that specific tree? And kept the wedge taken out of it?
When something like that is destroyed, it's irreplaceable. It would take a hundred years to regrow a tree the same, not to mention damaging an actual Roman wall!! It's like the idiot who carved his name into the colosseum the other year.

Has anyone got a link to a news article that states one of the defendants has been in custody since arrest?

MinistryofThyme · 09/05/2025 15:52

(All I’ve read is they’ve been remanded until sentencing for ‘their own safety’)
