Police patting an XL bully

Well it’s finally happened! The local XL bully owner (who has never muzzled his dog, including today and walks it on an extendable line - despite it being aggressive to other dogs) encountered two police officers on his walk today along the seafront. Everyone in the smallish village knows him - he’s the only bloody one with that breed and, he’s proud of it (boasting loudly)

Shock and horror - the police said nothing, about it being unmuzzled and worse than that, they then patted the vicious little bastard and said how lovely it was!!

Anyone who knows anything about dogs - tbh even anyone who didn’t - could tell what this dog was. But did the police do anything? No. Instead they went on to bother the local (very harmless) homeless man who had been asleep on a bench nearby - asked him to move on! He’s been around for about ten years and is so completely harmless. But something actually illegal and a nuisance? No. Let’s pat it on the bloody head.

I’ve long had a low opinion of the police but this really took the biscuit!!

Well have you reported it?

faerietales · 03/05/2025 09:15

Are you sure it’s an XL bully?

FrogsLoveRain · 03/05/2025 09:17

I understand your frustration but instead of channelling your energy into posting on MN you need to channel your energy into reporting him - and get other residents to do the same.

Best of luck OP.

FrenchandSaunders · 03/05/2025 09:19

How do you know it’s an XL bully?

blueirisesinspring · 03/05/2025 09:21

lol at these

have you reported it - to the police?

how do you know it’s an XL bully - probably same way you know what an elephant or a cat is Hmm

1988abc · 03/05/2025 09:27

Perhaps the police are playing the long game with the long game with the local scroat.
They know he is into something much bigger and involved or has information about something that they would like.
Catch more flies with honey is often the modus operandi.

Frequency · 03/05/2025 09:31

You cannot tell a dog is an XL bully on sight, so no, the police did not know what it was. Like the pitbull, an XL bully is a crossbreed categorized by a set of measurements, so unless you have measured it, you don't know either.

Eh - a lot of people have no idea about dog breeds - I have a beagle and I’ve been asked in the past whether he’s a Jack Russell 🤣

Fupoffyagrasshole · 03/05/2025 09:33

i would have went up the police and said you know that’s an illegal dog?? It needs to be registered and muzzled - just an fyi!! See what they say then
also report the fucker

ThePoshUns · 03/05/2025 09:34

How do you know the police didn’t do anything? Maybe they reported him for the offence? They aren’t going to tear his dog off him.

I was advised by a very lovely lady who was concerned for my dog's safety that he should be wearing a muzzle on walks, not because he is aggressive, but because the Police might confiscate him, being that he is an XL Bully.

He is a Beagle/Rott x Grin

You know how to identify an animal though! One thing to say ‘is that a jack russell?’ when it’s a beagle but pretending people don’t have eyes is different!

lljkk · 03/05/2025 09:38

Patting the dog is irrelevant (police are allowed to like dogs) and what happened to the bum on the bench also irrelevant.

Why not ask police on the spot "is that XL bully dog out & about illegally" ?

This! Have you measured the dog OP? Why don't you go and enjoy the sun....

Why do you think it’s possible to mistake a beagle for a JR but not (say) an American bulldog for an XL bully? Confused

Edited

That isn’t what was being said though.

’how do you know it’s an XL Bully?’

The obvious answer is ‘because I saw it.’

I mean yes, some dog breeds are easy to get mixed up and it’s understandable people might confuse say, a bichon frise and a toy poodle, but the answer is always going to be ‘because I saw it.’ Your family know who you are, don’t they?

And then the follow up to that is 'Well you saw it but assumed wrongly that it was an XL bully.'

WinterMorn · 03/05/2025 10:24

So OP, you were so outraged by this scene that you did…nothing. Give over. This is embarrassing.

I’m getting a bit confused myself here but ‘how did you know something was x’ is always going to be ‘because I saw it’, even if what you saw and identified was wrong.

If I see a crocodile and think it’s an alligator, I still thought it was an alligator because I saw it. It was a bit of a daft question that I was laughing at.

Seeing something doesn’t mean you know what it is!

blueirisesinspring · 03/05/2025 10:49

But it is how we identify things. so a fairly obvious answer.

So that’s why I’m asking how she knows for sure that it’s an XL. Just because she thinks it is one, doesn’t mean she’s right and that the police are just ignoring an illegal dog Confused

blueirisesinspring · 03/05/2025 10:53

Yes it is reasonable to say ‘what were the things that made you think it’s an XL Bully’ but that’s different to ‘how do you know it’s an XL Bully?’

They are fairly distinct and look like hippos.

MyOliveHelper · 03/05/2025 10:54

This whole XL bully thing is ridiculous. My BIL has an XL (registered etc), yet the sibling of that dog (different litter, same parents) doesn't meet the size guidance so it's not classified as an XL. He has them both. They're both well socialised dogs but if anyone should have to have a muzzle, it should be the older one who isn't classified as an XL.

We don't understand it but pushing could mean the older one is subject to the restrictions of the younger one so he hasn't complained.
