Police patting an XL bully

Well it’s finally happened! The local XL bully owner (who has never muzzled his dog, including today and walks it on an extendable line - despite it being aggressive to other dogs) encountered two police officers on his walk today along the seafront. Everyone in the smallish village knows him - he’s the only bloody one with that breed and, he’s proud of it (boasting loudly)

Shock and horror - the police said nothing, about it being unmuzzled and worse than that, they then patted the vicious little bastard and said how lovely it was!!

Anyone who knows anything about dogs - tbh even anyone who didn’t - could tell what this dog was. But did the police do anything? No. Instead they went on to bother the local (very harmless) homeless man who had been asleep on a bench nearby - asked him to move on! He’s been around for about ten years and is so completely harmless. But something actually illegal and a nuisance? No. Let’s pat it on the bloody head.

I’ve long had a low opinion of the police but this really took the biscuit!!

The XL dog has to be muzzled, surely?

I really can’t see why all dogs out in public shouldn’t have to be muzzled and leashed. It would protect the public and the owner (from being prosecuted or sued for dog attacks). It would also make the public less opposed to dogs being around them in all situations.

Seems like common sense to me.

Only the younger dog is classed as an XL because of his size. The older sibling is not.

All dogs should be muzzle trained. Whether it would be a useful tool for all dogs any time they are in public is debatable. Personally, my dog associates the muzzle with a time where she has to permit touching that she doesn't necessarily like but knows she will get the best treat afterwards. This time is the vet and groomers. If it was something that occurred more frequently, it wouldn't be as effective.

Based on what I'm reading the only conclusion I can come to is the ban didn't go far enough and they should all have been euthanized

Oh shhh with such nonsense 🥱🙄

It’s a reasonable point of view. If there are more deaths from XL Bullies - there have been at least six since the ban came in - a cull will need to be looked at again.

You'd have to find a better way of deciding who actually has this faulty genetic background other than height and looks.

Bonbon249 · 04/05/2025 16:19

First off, OP says the guy boasts about having an XL Bully (loudly, apparently). Secondly, the dog may be legally registered - there was a grace period that owners could register their dogs so they were not destroyed. However, if the dog actually is an XL Bully, my understanding is that it should be muzzled in public which the police would not ignore. Is it possible the owner is full of it and telling people it's an XL Bully when it's possibly an XL Bully cross? Anyway, worth a call to the police non-emergency number to voice your concerns.

stayathomer · 04/05/2025 16:23

how do you know it’s an XL bully - probably same way you know what an elephant or a cat is our local dog pound posted a lot of posts about recognising do bullies because people are being hassled. He said a lot of them aren’t xl bullies

You know how to identify an animal though! One thing to say ‘is that a jack russell?’ when it’s a beagle but pretending people don’t have eyes is different!

You are aware that the XL bully is a combination of dog breeds, aren’t you? It’s determined by head measurements, etc. It’s not the same as identifying a cat or an elephant. Would you be able to correctly identify the specific breed of cat or elephant?

Justfreedom · 04/05/2025 16:52

I petted a cat today.
Also i petted a large dog the other day dont no the breed.
Was i wrong to do it.
Let people be op.

No. They've killed countless people. They're crossbreeds who have been bred for destruction. You're either very naive or very stupid if you have one as a pet.

Patting the dog is irrelevant (police are allowed to like dogs) and what happened to the bum on the bench also irrelevant.

Why not ask police on the spot "is that XL bully dog out & about illegally" ?

The bum on the bench? Fuck sake.

Or like my aunt, the rescue gave you one a few years ago because they felt he was suited to life with a single, older woman. Another good boy.

FlyPhobicDog · 04/05/2025 18:02

This thread just reminded me to report a stupid man near us who walks his gigantic XL Bully in a residential area with children playing not just without a muzzle but without a LEAD.

Onleemoi · 04/05/2025 18:37

Weird you forgot about this massive risk until now.

BluebellsareBlue · 04/05/2025 19:05

I don’t think you sound like a particularly nice person OP and to reiterate others here you cannot tell an XL bully by sight due to the cross breeding.

i just want you to know that your low opinion of the police is reciprocated, by me, a retired officer. Hope you never need to call them.

DinoLil · 04/05/2025 19:39

@hehehesorryShe only has one burn mark where no hair grows. Her tongue and tail are deformed from being kept in a too small crate for her first few years. No other scars, so not fighting related. Her vet gave her a full exam when I got her and he said her history matched up with what he saw. (The funny shaved, growing in hair bit is because she had to have emergency treatment for ileus after getting a virus in March and she was on all sorts of drips and had to have a lot of scans, she was 3hrs from being pts and then rallied. She's stubborn and affectionate and I love her funny face which looks odd!)

Let me guess, you’re not a dog owner are you?

Emmz1510 · 04/05/2025 21:46

Too many Police officers are young, inexperienced and more interested in being pals/bantering with potential criminals than in doing their jobs. No wonder they don’t command the same respect they used to.

Maybe they genuinely didn’t know it was an XL Bully? Just because you seem to know them, doesn’t mean they would. I’m not sure I’d be able to definitively identify one as distinct from other similar breeds.

You could always have raised it then and there ‘excuse me, but I’m pretty sure this dog is an illegal XL bully’.

But you’ve done the right thing now by making a complaint.

Fireflybaby · 05/05/2025 07:02

Have these dogs ever presented a danger to anyone when they are out on their walks? Have they attacked people or animals? Do they show any sign of aggression or does it feel like their owner can't control them?
Because these are the important things that can be reported to police and dog warden.
