Please advice me on this travel idea I have

Is it stupid for me to want to travel to a location on holiday for a bit. And then to work from the office there for a bit to try and experience life there?

Like I want do a long trip to a place and work half weeks.

We have offices across Europe and I have this (probably stupid idea) of interrailing across the different cities. And half working in the office there and half exploring the city.

Contract wise and stuff it's perfectly fine for me to do this. My manager is perfectly happy.

@MrsFezziwig

Also if you want to work in your company’s offices, how will they react if employees see you doing this and think they would like to do the same?

I think the OP might have sensibly given up on that idea, but you are right, and there's potentially a bigger problem with doing that, certainly in countries where the labour market is highly regulated such as France.

If local employees perhaps mistakenly get the impression that someone is working in their offices on a foreign contract at the very least questions might start being asked.

Spoke to my manager about this idea. They had no issues with it. We do have a work from anywhere policy so I don't see any issues now.

Ok, well your manager UK side might not have issues with it but I'd still recommend you exercise some discression when dealing with the locals.

Good Luck.

Have you given them any detail at all? beyond you’d like to work remotely abroad?

Doesn’t look like any detail has been provided because the op hasn’t actually decided any of the detail.

As far as I can see its rock up at a satellite office, be given a desk and work in isolation.

Yes interrail through our offices in Europe and work at the offices there.

I think we're doomed to go around in circles on this.

If your boss has looked beyond company.policy and also made sure you're also OK from Visa POV for every country you are planning to work in, and they have also spoken directly to.e.g any French offices to ensure you aren't breaking any of the French rules regarding contracts then great...But if they haven't there's no getting away from the fact you might be skating on thin ice..and in some countries more so than in others.

FWIW local to us in rural France the authorities have just cracked down on irregular working in places like hair salons..so if you do strike France a glancing blow don't give anyone a reason to start asking questions about your exact status.

If you go ahead with this have fun, I hope it works out OK

I have read entire thread and agree

I doubt this will happen when any kind of detail beyond a vague… travel around office, is provided.

It will depend on the satellite location, insurance, licensed, space oh and visas!

anyway it will hopefully at least be a nice 6 week holiday.

Coffeequota · 04/06/2025 14:09

And given one of the OP’s motivation is meeting new people and socialising , this does not sound like it would deliver that.

This happens when you arrive in a satellite office and join a team to work on a project. Not if suddenly someone turns up on a spare desk in the corner of the office, working completely in isolation

I also advise caution/doing it properly.

I work in a huge company and as recently as today we had unannounced inspectors check that on-site workers were entitled to be there. This isn’t just about residents, there are rules and regulations about non-residents working, including about health insurance.

It is absolutely possible, but it is easy to screw up. Do you at least have an EU passport to make it easier?

I think the OP realised finally that this was unlikely to actually be possible and once her manager actually knew more detail…. Non starter.

A long holiday OP…. Much better!
