Is it stupid for me to want to travel to a location on holiday for a bit. And then to work from the office there for a bit to try and experience life there?

Like I want do a long trip to a place and work half weeks.

We have offices across Europe and I have this (probably stupid idea) of interrailing across the different cities. And half working in the office there and half exploring the city.

Contract wise and stuff it's perfectly fine for me to do this. My manager is perfectly happy.

This sounds great pre brexit - but now there is a fair amount of arse ache associated. BUT it can all probably be sorted. Contact the local offices and see what they say.

I Don’t think it will be as easy as you think; but I think it is possible you just have to keep going. Don’t be put off at the first the hurdle

Thank you. Will do so. I just had the idea of like seeing all the cities and not using up too much annual leave because can work in the offices. There's a Madrid office and I'd love to go! There are offices in France, Switzerland and Belgium!!

What is your motivation?

wanting an adventure?

or unhappy with current life and just looking for any kind of change?

And all will have capacity for you
and all will require your skill set?

It's a great idea. Lots of people work like this these days. Just make sure that you have a fast enough internet connection when you book your accommodation, if you need to make calls, have meetings etc.

She's going to work in their offices.

MounjaroMounjaro · 30/04/2025 19:01

Do you know any of the people in the other offices?

It does sound like a great idea and it sounds as though your boss thinks it would work, too. I'd love to know how you get on.

Skillset, yes all I need to do my job is laptop and WiFi. Physical space in their office? - that I don't know. But with our office in London is perfectly fine and you just book a desk before you go, even if you don't book a desk there's almost always space.

I know one colleague in one of the smaller offices in France.

So why don’t you wfh if you sound as though you need nothing more than a laptop and WiFi?

what kind of level job are we talking here op?

What are your language skills like? Or will it be a case that you turn up at these offices, they find you desk, you open laptop and that’s pretty much end of their involvement with you?

Itchyblister · 30/04/2025 19:12

Are you happy with your current life op? Or is the primary motivation of this less about the adventure and More about a need for change?

how old are you?

i missed accommodation…. Will you have to get short term lets in all these countries or are you thinking air BnB?

fiorentina · 30/04/2025 19:38

Sounds a great plan. Go for it!

Crushed23 · 30/04/2025 20:25

This is easier in smaller companies than in large companies with a bigger global presence, ironically. I know someone who worked at a start up and effectively relocated to Lisbon during Covid (due to Portugal coming out of restrictions sooner than the UK). The company wasn’t sophisticated enough to know about tax / insurance implications so turned a blind eye.

OP, if your company has offices all over Europe, they’re likely to be big enough to have an HR and Legal function who will be all over the risks and tax implications, I’m afraid. Doesn’t mean it isn’t worth a try - good luck!

LlynTegid · 30/04/2025 20:30

There could be tax implications. Hence no-one at our company is allowed to wfh outside the UK.

My company is very relaxed with WFH outside the UK.

Yep, I think that's a fair summation.

I was at large multinational for many years and even before Brexit there was no way you could choose to simply upstick from the UK and spend a few days working at a desk in a Europe office doing the exact same job you normally did in the UK. ..(short visits for meetings, training etc were OK).

Doing that could open up a whole can of worms when it came to tax and payment of social charges (both by the employer and the employee), Brexit has now added the work visa complication.

I think to do this legitimately the OP might have to try and get officially seconded to the European branch(es)

Hhhhdss · 01/05/2025 11:27

Quite a few colleagues have parents/family in other countries. If they ever go to see their family they usually WFH in that country for a few days and no one bats an eye.

I think at most you're allowed to do 8 weeks in one go of working in a different country. One colleague was from India and would go back once a year to see family.

Accomodation I'm thinking of finding an air BnB.

I want to do it for fun and excitement.

I rented an apartment in France a few months ago, for a month. It was in a town where I'd had ideas of retiring to. I drove over and explored the area down to the Mediterranean coast, visited several local towns and ski resorts!

I'm glad I went because as much as the town was in a beautiful setting, it was far too quiet for me. It was a great experience though and I'm considering doing the same again before too long, somewhere else. I wasn't working, but having a job would have made a big difference to the social side of things, obviously.

nfkl · 01/05/2025 11:41

It was very common in the team I used to manage, I have LMed people working occasionally (and going there mostly for holidays/family reasons) in Colombia, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Bulgaria, France, Netherlands, Egypt, Spain, etc.

Only country that I know where you need to pay attention is Italy. After 3 (?) weeks of working there, you are supposed to register with Italian authorities.

Hhhhdss · 01/05/2025 11:41

The reason I've made this thread was to ask if it worth me doing the half holiday half work approach?

Or would it be more sensible just for me to visit the cities I want to go to as a holiday?
