I just reversed into a car which has no insurance, tax or MOT. What happens now?

driving home, residential streets with lots of parked cars obstructing views...edged out of a t-junction to turn left. there was a car coming down the road, so I reversed back....into the car which had followed me out of the junction.

his car is scuffed over the passenger wheel arch (mostly paint transfer from my car) and I have quite a crunch to the right back corner

he was really cross and wanted me to bank transfer him money to repair his car. which I declined and said I want to go through insurance (as I'm skint), gave him my name, number and registration. I have his registration and phone number.

I have checked online and the vehicle tax expired in march 2024, MOT expired march this year. so he has no insurance. what will happen now?? I am not planning on telling my insurance company unless he makes a claim because I am financially really really struggling and don't want my premium to increase

if he has insurance which I doubt he will it will be void as no mot or tax. If it was me I’d ignore him and block his number

mummytoonetryingfortwo · 28/04/2025 19:53

OP, circumstances aside, if you lose your insurance because you don’t report, or you report and lie, you’ll be in a much worse position. Tell them what happened, give them his reg and leave it at that.

Wrong on the insurance and terrible advice.

I mean, I WENT to reverse around the corner (view obstructed by parked car) I didn't hardly move at all before I hit him. so on reflection I think he drove into me as much as I reversed into him

This. Generally op, don’t get hung up on whether he was insured, whether no tax and mot, any of that.

don’t mess with insurance companies, play straight, tell them, tell him, then leave it to them.

I’m wondering if he rolled his car forward so it would seem it was you that hit him? Crash for cash is a thing

OP has already said she reversed into him!

empty squares are parked cars.

This doesn’t help your cause. Why on earth did you reverse?!

is it normal to expect insurance companies to communicate on it though?

i do feel annoyed at having to pay to fix his scratch, when he isn't even legal

I could ask him to go through the police??

To be fair if he did have an MOT and tax you would be happy to pay for your accident. So I think you should just give him your insurance details and tell your insurance company that he has no tax and no MOT. Also ask him for his insurance details to ‘tell’ your insurance company, see what he says to that.

notthisnowaswell · 28/04/2025 18:32

he is phoning me now asking for £200 because he needs to fix his car quickly as he is selling it!

however, he is asking for my insurance policy number...I don't need to give him that do I? that isn't normal? or can he claim on my insurance without having insurance himself??

Block the CF.

it's a BMW X6 2020

It will attract min 6 penalty points which can have a worse effect on people's lives than a fine- ie possible totting driving ban.

Go thru police, op.

Izthisit · 28/04/2025 19:46

You hit his car and damaged it . You have two choices. The first is to give him your insurance detais. If there is any possible way of not paying out- your insurer will find it. Second is to pay him the £200 he is asking for to make this go away.

£200 won’t even touch the sides.

Whocanbelieveit · 28/04/2025 19:58

You could ask him for his insurance details to tell your insurance company then see how keen he is to get the insurance company involved.

Foodylicious · 28/04/2025 19:58

Speak to your insurer.
Pass on his details and the incident.
Tell him the name of your insurer and that all further contact needs to be through them.
Then block his number.

look at the picture I uploaded. do you drive? it's common to have to reverse in our residential streets here, due to number of parked cars and narrow roads 🤷🏼‍♀️

I do drive.

You shouldn’t have pulled out, or you should have allowed the other driver to reverse on the straight road. I can’t quite work out how you even managed to go into him!

I'm terrified of my premium going up. my daughter's black box registered an accident because she braked too hard. it prevented NCB for the year even though no one claimed because there had been no accident and THEY told HER that it was likely due to braking hard. took ages to sort that out

I'm in the process of loosing my income due to disability and cannot afford any more outgoings but also rely heavily on my car. Aaaargh

You're worried about premiums and happy to hand over money to a chancer?

You dont sound very knowledgeable about motoring or insurance. Sounds like you shouldnt be on the road by all accounts.

Sorry if that sounds harsh, but thats only based off of what you have posted.

I'm pissed off, because his damage is a scrape. you could probably fix it with spit on a tissue, tcut at most. if that was my car, I wouldn't even pursue it. my neighbour has caused more damage to my car reversing into parallel parking spot

In that case, give him the cash

Probably not the best time to be reversing in to people I would have thought.

He probably won't pursue it and that's why he chanced it for cash. Sounds like he can easily polish it up himself.

DonnaDonna0 · 28/04/2025 20:02

I had a small accident recently and paid to get the damage repaired but I did have to contact my insurance. I explained there would be no claim made by either party but the insurance said the other party has 6 months to claim so it stays open and your no claims bonus is put on hold. After the 6 month if no claims are made your no claims bonus is re-instated.
Basically my insurance will go up when I renew in a few month but I should get that money back in 6 months when no claims have been made and my insurance premium goes down.

As I said, I based what I said off of your comments.

You dont know what to do, whether you are coming or going and are all over the place asking for advice and probably heeding none of it.

Perhaps some inward reflection is needed. Dont point your gun at me because of your motoring incompetence. Thats on you.

Finallydoingit24 · 28/04/2025 20:03

Genuinely quite shocked at this. The OP is entirely at fault - it’s got fuck all to do whether he has insurance or a valid MOT. I’m aghast that people (including OP) think it’s cool to lie to the insurance company about him causing the accident. You. Reversed. Into. Him. He looked to be turning the other way on your diagram so no I doubt very much he drove into you and in any event you are liable if you drove into him.
I actually hope your premiums go up so that you learn some respect. You sound really awful and irresponsible.
