I just reversed into a car which has no insurance, tax or MOT. What happens now?

driving home, residential streets with lots of parked cars obstructing views...edged out of a t-junction to turn left. there was a car coming down the road, so I reversed back....into the car which had followed me out of the junction.

his car is scuffed over the passenger wheel arch (mostly paint transfer from my car) and I have quite a crunch to the right back corner

he was really cross and wanted me to bank transfer him money to repair his car. which I declined and said I want to go through insurance (as I'm skint), gave him my name, number and registration. I have his registration and phone number.

I have checked online and the vehicle tax expired in march 2024, MOT expired march this year. so he has no insurance. what will happen now?? I am not planning on telling my insurance company unless he makes a claim because I am financially really really struggling and don't want my premium to increase

I still don’t get why “but you reversed in to his car!!!” is being parroted over and over.

The car should have been on his drive. Declared SORN. Not even ON the road for OP to hit it. If he’d been following the law, he wouldn’t have been hit.

No license, don’t drive, stay home. I’m not going to start flying a plane with no license just because I have one and fancy it.

It’s being parroted over and over because it is what happened. The fact that his car was without text etc doesn’t negate OP reversing into him. And no licence? Who had no licence?

lastminutetrip · 01/05/2025 15:05

Surely complaining that you got hit while driving without insurance is like claiming compensation for hurting yourself in someone’s house whilst burgling them 😂

It was on the road where it shouldn’t have been. If you don’t want your illegal vehicle hit, store it legally ie SORN and not driving on the road, in the way of drivers who do pay to have insurance

Right I get that, but you are asking why people keep reiterating that OP drove into him. It’s because OP did drive into him. The fact he shouldn’t have been there doesn’t negate her hitting him.

Well what can she do except tell the police and move on with her life. He becomes a victim of his own misfortune.

he was perfectly welcome to avoid all this drama by not getting behind the wheel and driving illegally. If he has the money for Pirelli tyres he has the money for insurance ✔️

Hi op!

Hoping you've blocked his number by now but just checking all is peaceful and you've had no further hassle from this guy.

Let us know f you hear anything. I doubt he'll take it any further as he'll have to own up to being on the road illegally. Glad you didn't give him your address! Can't believe people would actually suggest you should 🙄

If theres anyone that shouldnt have been on the road, its the OP!

How the fuck didnt see a car behind her? (Thats driving without due care and attention....what if that had been a child? YOUR child?)

And then she's spent most of this thread saying gleefully how she would LIE to her insurers!

he is phoning me now asking for £200 because he needs to fix his car quickly as he is selling it!

however, he is asking for my insurance policy number...I don't need to give him that do I? that isn't normal? or can he claim on my insurance without having insurance himself??

He's perfectly entitled to do that of course, so I'd suggest that you respond, by text to have a record of it, along the lines of...

"That's fine, if you really want to go down that route. You are aware that you were involved in a road traffic act while driving a motor vehicle on a public road.
Your vehicle was uninsured, untaxed and without a current MOT, all of which are Offences under the Road Traffic Act.

I'm confident that the cost to you of those offences and the permanent loss of your vehicle when it's taken for destruction by the police will be a lesson to you"

they weren't particularly interested, no. they sent me a link to an online form which I filled in. they sounded marginally more interested that he had been aggressive and phoning me asking for money.

Make sure it gets formally reported yourself.....

Report an untaxed vehicle

Anonymously report an untaxed vehicle that you’ve seen.

Are you joking? I don't know anyone who does NOT carry a copy of the insurance documents in their car. You are obligated to offer those details to anyone you're involved in an accident with. I would not let you leave the scene without providing insurance details, and, if you had tried to, I would have called the police on you.

Like many others, I don’t know anyone who carries their insurance details in their car. Most insurance documents include personal details such as name and address. I don’t leave my personal details in my car - I don’t want to risk someone breaking into the car or stealing it and then knowing where I live, and quite likely that I’m not at home. It’s really not advisable to have documentation with these details on in an unsupervised car, even if it has a good locking/alarm system.

I can access my details on my phone, quickly and safely I need to. I’ve never needed to.

Do you really think the police would come out for a collision where there is limited damage and no injuries to people? If so, how long do you reckon it would take them to come?!
How would you realistically stop someone from leaving, bar the police threat? You don’t even need the insurance details - the car registration number gives you everything you need anyway.

Badbadbunny · 02/05/2025 20:16

I've always carried a couple of copies of my motor insurance policy in the car. It means if I have an accident, I can just give them a copy and that's the end of communication which is how I'd like it. Only had two accidents in 43 years of driving and did that on both occasions, neither my fault, but didn't want any further communication so gave them no excuse to try to contact me.

Greenfields20 · 02/05/2025 20:42

I would never give a member of the public a copy of my insurance details and never give them my address. Completely unnecessary and unsafe.

Don’t be ridiculous.

Luckily for other drivers, you have your insurance disc on your windscreen then showing your ins details.

A quick photo of that is all anyone needs to track you down.

What are you talking about discs? This is the year 2025.

Car registration number is all an insurance company needs nowadays. A member of the public has no need to know my home address.

And if someone was driving illegally they wouldn't be likely to give the correct address anyway!

I wonder if they are meaning the tax disc which hasnt been displayed on cars in over 10 years. Which gave no owners details anyway. This is presumably someone who hasnt driven in a long time.

Maybe they're in a different country where tax and insurance discs are required to be displayed in car windscreens.

Well yes in that case they wouldnt understand the UK driving rules and requirements.

What disc?

The only thing I have near on my car window is a parking disc. This has no personal details on at all.
There is no insurance disc - never had one in the many years I’ve been driving. I also have nothing like a tax disc - they’ve not been issued for years anyway.

AquaPeer · 03/05/2025 08:58

I actually can’t stop laughing at the confident arseholeness with which the “insurance disc” was thrown in 😂😂

Yes another country.

They are great in situations like this.

No arsehole drivers who refuse to exchange ins details.

So you thought, with no knowledge whatsoever, you would aggressively apply your countries motoring rules to the uk? And berate people for now following… you know, the rules of another country? 😂😂😂

I have ;and repeat) no interest in anything you say. I wouldn’t look in your direction in real life, you are not the type of person I relate to on any level. I won’t be responding to you again.

The screwy "rules" in whatever country you are in have zero relevance in the UK.

So perhaps quit projecting such crap on a thread which is clearly of a UK nature.
