I just reversed into a car which has no insurance, tax or MOT. What happens now?

driving home, residential streets with lots of parked cars obstructing views...edged out of a t-junction to turn left. there was a car coming down the road, so I reversed back....into the car which had followed me out of the junction.

his car is scuffed over the passenger wheel arch (mostly paint transfer from my car) and I have quite a crunch to the right back corner

he was really cross and wanted me to bank transfer him money to repair his car. which I declined and said I want to go through insurance (as I'm skint), gave him my name, number and registration. I have his registration and phone number.

I have checked online and the vehicle tax expired in march 2024, MOT expired march this year. so he has no insurance. what will happen now?? I am not planning on telling my insurance company unless he makes a claim because I am financially really really struggling and don't want my premium to increase

We have insurance companies so we do not have to engage personally.

Text him.
Tell him his insurance company ( yes I know he isn’t insured ) will be able to find out all of your car insurance details and they will take it from there.
Tell him he shouldn’t be contacting you direct as this is a matter for your insurance company
Block his number

you really shouldn’t be giving him any personal details
All he needs is your car reg.

ok ok, so this IS what I did. I only gave him my first name and mobile number and obviously he has my registration. when he asked for other details, I said that he needs to pass my name/reg/phone number to his insurance company who will communicate with my insurance company.

@notthisnowaswell You're required to tell your insurance company. It will be a condition of them providing cover.
Let them deal with the bloke.

It makes me laugh how many people on here seem to think this is a sweet innocent man, off to get his car MOT’ed, no doubt in order to visit his unwell grandma in a care home and do some voluntary work at an animal shelter! In reality we all know these kind of drivers. Dodgy car, blacked out windows, no tax, no MOT, almost certainly no insurance, trying to intimidate a woman and get some cash. Anyone who thinks otherwise is either shockingly naive or being deliberately obtuse just to wind up OP.

Could check insurance here -- maybe from an anonymous browser. askMID

You should not have given him your phone number or name.
Insurance companies can get all of that Personal Information just from your car Reg info. He has no need or right to that.

Nevertheless nothing you can do now. Just block his number.
You’ve told him to contact his insurance company so job done.

i do feel annoyed at having to pay to fix his scratch, when he isn't even legal

You admitted it was your fault OP, his lack of MOT does not change that. So I assume you’d be ok about the situation if he had an MOT? Weird take on the situation

Most people dont think that. Most are advising OP to do things correctly, not engage with him, go through insurance and not tell porkies to the insurance company.

The person whose car was stationary was hit, and the person driving the vehicle that caused the accident is trying to worm out of responsibility?

I know who the chancer is here, and it's not the guy with the BMW and the bling.

HelplessSoul · 28/04/2025 20:59

OP needs reporting to the Police too - for lying and no doubt breaching the terms of her insurance policy!!

It wasn’t his fault so insurance companies will be in his favour
He demanded £200 in cash ??? ( not correct procedure )

He’s not insured

Yes would it be like- your MOT was valid when you took out the insurance, but then say 6 months later the MOT expires, you still have the years worth of insurance. But from his point of view presumably once its found out his MOT had expired the insurance is invalid. Is that correct?

Don’t be daft, she hasn’t even done that.

every disputed accident someone is lying. They’re not both telling the truth when they blame each other are they. You can’t possibly think the police get involved in every insurance lie.

I don’t think the police deal with either of those.😆

FlowerUser · 28/04/2025 21:06

The penalty for driving without insurance is steep. Fixed Penalty Notice with a £300 fine and six points. More if it goes to court. Aside from causing death it is the most serious vehicle crime. Many people who commit this crime are involved in other crimes as well.

There is a duty to report an accident to the police. In this circumstance I would recommend that you do report it to them on 111 or online.

With respect to the insurance company, I recommend you report the accident and give details of where his vehicle was located when the collision happened. If you caught his wheel arch then he wasn't fully behind you, but sneaking around you. Your diagram is a good start.

Be open and direct. If asked about who caused the accident, say it's difficult to tell or do not answer the question. Do not admit liability. Investigating what happened is what insurance firms are for. I imagine he is uninsured and they won't like that.

OP has openly stated she would lie on this thread multiple times - the intent is there.

But thats OK, she lies, your premiums go up and you arent bothered. Gotcha.

I’m sure if you were the other driver you’d not want a group of strangers trying to encourage the driver who’s damaged your car to try and worm their way out of it.

Take responsibility, the other drivers tax/MOT makes zero difference to the mistake OP made, those are the facts. Someone who has openly said they are struggling financially, disabled and reliant on the car shouldn’t take any risk of getting their insurance cancelled due to not reporting because OP will be fucked if she can’t afford to re-insure.

If I were the other driver I literally couldn’t care less what a group of people were telling the liable driver to do. Who even thinks like that in the real world?

Edited

at the risk of taking a battering....the more I look at the location of the damage to both our cars, I think he must have been trying to come round me and turn LEFT 🤔...I originally assumed right because he zoomed off right afterwards (but he could see left was blocked by the other car by now!)
