How much do you spend a year on holidays?

JudithOnHolidayAgain · 28/04/2025 10:37

I've just booked a 5 night all inclusive trip to the Canaries for me and dh at a toltal cost of £850 (that includes insurance, airport transfers in Uk and Spain, flights and car hire). It feels very indulgent as we usually go on self catering family holidays but this is a treat to unwind and relax while ds 17 with autism and severe learning difficulties has repite.

We had a four night family break in January in the UK in a mobile home with a hot tub. DS and DD who is 19 came with us and it cost £260 (late deal)

We had a week in an apartment in Spain for february half term, that was just ds as dd was in uni. That cost £900 in total.

We are having a 12 night family trip to Belgium and The Netherlands at the end of August, we will be self catering and staying in a few locations which includes a few nights at a theme park - cost excluding food and fuel is £1500.

We may do something for October half term but that would be a cheap late deal in the uk.

We will probably spend around £4000 this year but it feels like we are getting a lot for that.

Our net household income is £33,000 we have no debt and have paid off our martgage. We value our holidays and can afford them by driving older cars and being frugal with things like eating out and clothes shopping. DH works full time and I'm a full time carer for DS, life can be challenging but we enjoy taking him away even though it requires a lot of planning.

You are getting a lot for 4k.
we prob spend about 10% of our household income on holidays (about 10k) but that doesn’t include spending money.
out of that we’ve had a feb trip to canaries, Easter trip to Egypt, a summer trip to Cyprus and a Christmas stay at centre parcs. That’s for 2 adults 1 child. On top of that (not included in cost) we do at least 3 short city trips (UK based) every year.

Aposterhasnoname · 28/04/2025 10:47

We’ve already been to Vietnam, that cost £7000 if you include spend, airport hotel and taxi etc, we’ve got a cheap all inclusive week in Fuertaventura in six weeks time, which will be £2000 by the time we’ve done, then Bali in September, which will prob come out at around £8000 depending on spend and if we stay at the airport the night before. Then February we’ve booked St Lucia, the holiday cost £8000, then there’s spending, and travel to Gatwick for that one. We usually use Manchester.

Mortgage paid off, kids grown up, both in very good jobs, so we’re working on the bucket list while we still have the health and money to do it.

StrikeForever · 28/04/2025 10:53

We have traveled a lot over the years. We have now decided that we are pretty much done with long haul and all the extra effort involved in that. So the cost of our trips will be much less. We are both of the view that we won’t stay in accommodation that is significantly less comfortable than being at home, so we book 5* hotels (bed and breakfast). Going forward, on average, on current prices we’ll spend £7000/8000 excluding spending money.

Loveduppenguin · 28/04/2025 10:57

So far this year;

Paris for me and DD (3nights)-
Accomodation 400
Flights 230
spent 300-400 on food etc.
so approx 1k

London for me and DP 2nights (partly his birthday treat)-
accommodation 257
flights 200
spent- 250ish
so approx 1k again

holiday with DCand my mum (1 week- Galway (centre parcs style place)
Accommodation - 1200 for my share
petrol and spends - TBD Probably 500ish including activities
so 1700

Iceland with DP for 4 nights
Accomodation, flights, experiences package - 900

So that’s about 4600

Ariela · 28/04/2025 11:01

£0 on holidays.
Might have an impromptu night or two away - £100 hotel room and a meal out excursion here and there in the UK. Total annual cost under £1-2k I guess?

Simply CBA to pack, spend hours travelling, dislike going in a tin can airplane at best of times, it's cramped and you cannot stop off on the way, and what if you have unreasonable passengers next to you?! I hate hot places with nothing to do (couldn't lie on a beach, and if I want to sit by the pool my neighbour has an open invitation to use his pool)

Bodonka · 28/04/2025 11:03

Huge kudos to you @JudithOnHolidayAgainthey all sound like great deals!

This is only the second year we’ve done more than the annual butlins as had been squirrelling away the pennies to buy a house (now bought!) ~ it’s just me and DS, who’s 5.

We Ski-ed in Feb, which was around £3,500 all in.

Did a last minute short break to Dorset over Easter, £550.

Driving/camping the NC500 for 10 days over May Half Term, probably £300 on campsites + £200 petrol ~ food etc we’ll cook as we go same as at home.

DS is coming on a work trip with me to the US during the beginning of summer hols, and I’ve paid around £600 for him to do some day sessions of US summer camp. His flight was paid for mainly by points and obviously mine + hotel are covered.

Will road trip to friends in Europe this summer, likely £500 petrol, £200 channel crossing and £1k hotels en route.

6 various weekends away for a hobby and festival, approx £250 each = £1,500

October HT Butlins = £1,100, but we’re covering family who are joining us.

So £9,450 if my maths is right - it’s about 8% of my annual take home.

FancyCatSlave · 28/04/2025 11:04

£0 most years! I'm not much of a fan. Ask me how much I have spent on ponies over the years though- that’s usually £10k annually. I’m horseless for now though and will probably start taking DD on 1 or 2 cheap holidays a year (maybe a week abroad and a short UK break). But probably no more than £2k from an income of approx £50k (about to become single parent).

Radra · 28/04/2025 11:05

A lot!

Usually 3 long weekends/short breaks a year at around 1k each - things like Center Parcs/Eurostar

Then usually either 2-3 weeks away in the UK/short haul - totalling about 5k - or one longer long haul trip, more in the 7k space

So I guess between 8-10k a year

Mikart · 28/04/2025 11:06

Up to £20000 on breaks. We go away every month. We don't have beach holidays or longhaul. Retired.

crackofdoom · 28/04/2025 11:12

Nice one OP, you've clearly got an eye for a bargain! I keep on meaning to start a "Holidays on a shoestring" thread, as a counterpoint to all those threads in Holidays moaning about not being able to find a week AI in Spain for under 8 grand 😆

I'm taking the kids Interrailing round Europe this summer. I think travel and accommodation is now totalling about £1700- it was a bit less, but as my finances have perked up a bit over the last few months and our return Eurostar got cancelled, I've rebooked it a couple of days later and added a couple of nights in Paris on the end. Paid attractions and how often we eat out will depend heavily on how flush I'm feeling towards our departure date.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 28/04/2025 11:13

For this year: Canaries £2800, Turkey £3900 both a week both all inclusive, £9200 3 week road trip in the US in summer.
2 adults and 1 child.
Usual spend 10-15k depending on the type of holiday/destination. Holidays are a big thing for us.

Clearinguptheclutter · 28/04/2025 11:17

They sound like great deals

we have two school aged children and will probably spent £10k this year on two Europe holidays. Def not doing that every year. It’s obscene really, I am very lucky that dh has a good salary, mine is very average

Stickortwigs · 28/04/2025 11:17

Just added up the last year and it’s £10k.

£6.5k skiing
£3k on 2 visits to family abroad. Mostly that’s the cost of flights.
£500 UK city break.

Family of 4.

GameOfJones · 28/04/2025 11:29

We're a family of 4, with two children in Primary school and budget £5k a year. Normally £4k on a week abroad and £1k for a UK caravan holiday. We will shop around for deals and often it's cheaper to go abroad at Easter or May half term and do a Mon-Fri caravan break in the summer holidays, or not go abroad at all in summer but then do trips in two half terms.

We've found cruising to be pretty good value. Our seven night cruise to France and Spain last August cost £2700 with food and basic drinks (tea, coffee, water, fruit juice in the mornings) included. We spent a bit more e.g on alcoholic drinks and some spending on shore as I like to spend money in country too but it wasn't a huge amount as we're quite happy pottering around in the ports and going to a local cafe or museum etc.

Titasaducksarse · 28/04/2025 11:44

You've done well OP.

Even the same places can vary wildly. Eg we spent £3000 for everything a couple of years ago doing 6 weeks in Indonesia Inc 3 weeks on Bali...whereas you'll see another poster spent £8000 for a couple of weeks.

This year:
Italy for a week Inc £1500 Inc flights, car hire, hotels not food

August x 2 weeks campervan. Probably £700 on sites and fuel but this might come down as we will likely free camp. Not Inc food or activities

October x 2 weeks India. Premium seats on Flights, internal travel, hotels and visa looking about £2500. Not Inc food

We will have various other weekends camping, going away etc. Add another £500.

2 adults no kids

MissAmbrosia · 28/04/2025 11:45

Hmmm. Maybe 12 - 15 k per year. Maybe more than that including spending money as we normally go S/C if its for more than a few days and I don't do the catering part. This is for 2 of us as dd is 21 and does her own thing. This would be 2 x 2 week holidays (Europe) and several mini-breaks. This year I've done Warsaw, Malaga, Utrecht for weekends and have Salzburg and Amsterdam planned, and probably Lisbon or Seville in the autumn. 2 weeks in Italy next month - likely to about 7 or 8k in total. I prioritise travel over other things really.

Cosycover · 28/04/2025 11:50

Usually around 2k but this year it is 7k as we are going away twice. Next year's holiday is also booked and that is 5k.

Lascivious · 28/04/2025 11:52

We’ve had one holiday so far this year. I think it was 7.5k for the two of us.

HolidayHappy123 · 28/04/2025 11:56

£50k - £100k (you did ask!). This year about £80k.

2 x trips to Dubai
1 x trip to Spain
Villa rental for the whole Summer
Probably a couple of weekends away

We are taking parents, DC and GCs on certain trips, so paying for 8 or 9 people.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 28/04/2025 11:56

That sounds great @JudithOnHolidayAgain
I love getting away for a break and it sounds as if you’ve done really well with your budgeting there - getting multiple breaks for the price of an average family week away in the summer.

We spend quite a large percentage of our income on holidays, but DH and I are fairly recently retired and don’t have a huge amount of other outgoings - like you, holidays are a priority for us.

All of our breaks are self catering, unless we do a short one or two nights away in the UK. This year we spent some time in Spain in January, and will be going to Italy in June and Croatia in September. We’ve also booked a week in Wales in the summer. Mostly it’s just me and DH but sometimes DS and his partner join us. They pay for their own flights though.

Glitchymn1 · 28/04/2025 11:57

Paris for DD and I- it was last minute so 2k with spends.
Will do Spain with Dh, DD probably £4K again with spends, as we don’t like all inc.
UK breaks not sure- will do at least one perhaps £1k.

I’m not bothered about going away, DH travels for work - we do it for DD. I’d rather stay in the U.K. I feel worse after a holiday as it’s not a holiday when in the pool for hours! Coming back to all the washing and ironing too arghhh!

I read ponies as peonies and was incredibly confused about how big your garden was!

JadeSeahorse · 28/04/2025 12:05

We spend, on average, around £14k per year for 2-3 holidays but we are retired and have good pensions/savings so can easily afford it now.
(Certainly wasn't the case when we were younger.😄)

However, we are fast getting to the stage where we feel we can't deal with long haul flights like we used to plus, since COVID, the cost of Business class and premium economy has gone stupidly expensive where we just can't justify the extra any more - e.g. from £2350 pp BC MAN/BKK return is now around £5600 pp - so I'm not sure how many more LH trips we will take.

This year we are spending 2 weeks in the Canaries and then, later in the year, 2 weeks in Abu Dhabi, both 5*, and and that is costing just under £10k - excluding spending money.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 28/04/2025 16:51

@Glitchymn1
When I was faced with dealing with a big wash on return from holidays, I used to go to the laundrette, an extra expense, yes, but you can get it all washed and dried in one go. I understand that the new extra large machines you find outside petrol stations have a code so no-one can take your washing, I used a standard laundrette and sat with my book. Fold as soon as your washing comes from the dryer and you won’t need to iron. Seems less hassle to do it all at once.

Hollyaddy · 28/04/2025 16:56

That's great value op.

I spend most of my income on holidays.

I dont have a mortgage and dh pays the bills. Apart from some insurances and car upkeep plus food I spend the rest on hols. Week on tenerufe end of jan. 5 nights there in April. Week In. Greece with dc in summer. Weekend away in September with school friend. 11 nights in dubai with dc In Oct hols. Dh may join us or may not. 11 nights with dh dc in tenerife over Xmas.

Few 1 or 2 nights away with dh in this country too.
