At Cleethorpes for the weekend decided to take the dog on a quiet beach we found.Walking along about 10 metres from the entrance and... I sunk.Apparently "quick mud" is a thing here and at least weekly the coastguards have to rescue people ive since found out.I was up to my thighs and couldn't move.Eventually dh and a good samaritan got me out! I then had to do a long walk back to the accommodation lathered in mud. there were no signs warning people at all.Wine has eased my trauma.

Is your dog okay? :O

We went to a beach in Norfolk recently and there were signs for quick sand. Never seen those in the UK before. It was deserted so we'd have been in trouble had we got stuck in it.

They generally do better because they are not as heavy and their weight is spread over 4 points instead of two.

This is pretty much the only thing I remember from our annual Cleethorpes holiday when we were younger. I've lost many a shoe to the mud of Cleethorpes

alcoholnightmare · 26/04/2025 21:45

Blimey! Never heard of this at all. YANBU to be surprised

Eggsinthewhoopsiebasketalready · 26/04/2025 21:45

Slight digress have a read about Valerie... Rescued after 529 days off Kangaroo Island...
Heart warming tale (tail?!)

purpleme12 · 26/04/2025 21:46

Erm that sounds terrifying!

DefyingGravidy · 26/04/2025 21:47

Was it above the high tide mark?

madaboutpurple · 26/04/2025 21:48

Hi OP I am just glad to hear you are ok now. Wow that must have been a worry. We went to that area a few years ago and I did not know about this. We did not actually walk on the beach area we used the promenade. It has stunned me .I am glad that you survived.

I meant that if the tide came in all the way, would you have been under water?

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 26/04/2025 22:00

Yes. I think it's because the sea goes out a hell of a long way at cleethorpes.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 26/04/2025 22:02

I assume it is, I should probably say

VerityUnreasonble · 26/04/2025 22:15

Had this once in Southport- walk out to hunt for the sea one side of the pier walked back on the other side right into "quick mud". There actually were signs but facing the beach and closer to the front so I couldn't see them heading back inland.

Fortunately made it back safely - if a little filthy but would have been awful if the tide had come in. In so flat there, it comes in fast.

wanttokickoffbutcant · 26/04/2025 22:19

I was in Jersey and wandered off to look at the oyster beds in the bay...the tide came in and surrounded me. Had to wade through thigh water with a strong current. Only saw the warning signs on the way back.

purpleme12 · 26/04/2025 22:20

You're coming across way calmer than I would have been!

wizzywig · 26/04/2025 22:21

Wow I thought quick sand only happened in 1980s Hollywood films

purpleme12 · 26/04/2025 22:23

There's quicksand in Arnside

There was no way I was going anywhere near the places on the beach that may have it! We stayed in the safe bits! But thankfully I knew about it!

EmeraldRoulette · 26/04/2025 22:26

Blimey

you do sound impressively calm

do you let the coastguard know or something? It might be unmarked as it has just formed.

glad you're okay!

I thought it was only in Morecambe Bay!

Magicmonster · 26/04/2025 22:30

This gives flashbacks to the 1990s tv show ‘999’. Quicksand, pool filters, javelins, it’s why my generation are scared of so many slightly random things!
