At Cleethorpes for the weekend decided to take the dog on a quiet beach we found.Walking along about 10 metres from the entrance and... I sunk.Apparently "quick mud" is a thing here and at least weekly the coastguards have to rescue people ive since found out.I was up to my thighs and couldn't move.Eventually dh and a good samaritan got me out! I then had to do a long walk back to the accommodation lathered in mud. there were no signs warning people at all.Wine has eased my trauma.

I saw this happen to a woman on Crosby beach in Liverpool. She had to be rescued by the coastguard. The entire time she was stuck she held her handbag above her head and kept screaming she couldn't put it on the sand because it was expensive.

Foxtor mire on Dartmoor inspired Grimpen mire in The Hound of the Baskervilles.
They are water logged areas of peat that become boggy and are dangerous to cross.

FlourandFlowers · 26/04/2025 23:04

I have family who live in Cleethorpes and they say this happens often. I hope you have a good rest of the weekend. If you need any recommendations of cafes/restaurants etc, let me know.

This happened to my DS and it stole his shoe, and half of his body till we pulled him out

I meant that if the tide came in all the way, would you have been under water?

Yes

There are loads of signs, you just didn't see them. Fair warning, if you're walking a muddy beach on the east coast of England, especially in Norfolk and lincolnshire, there's going to be quick mud. It used to be swampland. It's usually a darker, wetter looking patch.

Glad you got out ok.

Rusteze · 27/04/2025 09:13

This happened to me in the same place!! Had 2 dogs with me, didn’t see the signs although I’m sure there probably are some. Extremely scary.

My feet sank and then I couldn’t get them out at all. I managed to grab the (very muddy) dogs and pass them to my husband who then dragged me out.

Embarrassing and scary at the same time!

TeaAndStrumpets · 27/04/2025 09:27

Not quicksand related. In 1969 a riding school owner took a group of girls riding on Cleethorpes beach early one morning and all died after they were lost in a sudden fog and the tide came in. I think one horse survived. A really awful tragedy - she also left a young family.

Ooh. We 'discovered' Cleethorpes last year (i.e. that it was fairly quick to drive to and easy to park there) and have plans to go back - thanks for the warning!

LilDeVille · 27/04/2025 10:36

My mum got stuck in quick sand / mud a few years ago. Locals (including her) know but you can still be in it before you know it, and visitors are deffo at more risk - definitely signs needed!! Another reason to dislike beaches for me ha. Hope you’re ok op!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 27/04/2025 10:38

UPDATE..
The man who rescued me is the son in law of our neighbours! And his daughter goes to afterschool club with my ds apparently.Neighbour saw my post on fb and her gd facetimed her and told her what had happened and she put two and two together.Small world!

Hi OP I am just glad to hear you are ok now. Wow that must have been a worry. We went to that area a few years ago and I did not know about this. We did not actually walk on the beach area we used the promenade. It has stunned me .I am glad that you survived.

The beach by the prom is fine.

Op appears to have gone walking on the marshes, rather than the beach.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 27/04/2025 13:49

Definitely not marshes.quiet beach near Haven

Probably a stupid question, but I understand you could have died if the tide came in and you were still stuck, but would the quick sand completely take your body, like it does on the films?

That's nice of you to consider that. I'm sure the OP appreciates it. 🙂

LongRangeDessertGroup · 27/04/2025 14:27

I’ve been there, Fitties beach? There are signs but maybe not enough. It’s one of those places where the tide really goes out and they advise you to get back to shore five hours before it starts coming in again because the water starts coming in faster than you can walk. It also comes around and behind you so you can get cut off that way too, same at Crosby beach which someone has mentioned up thread.

UnctuousUnicorns · 27/04/2025 14:29

"Fitties beach" Is that where all the gawjus beach bods hang out? 😉

Rowgtfc72 · 27/04/2025 15:15

There are a few signs here and there. We've had a lot of people caught out though.
If you stay on the main beach by the pier you're fine. Out towards the whaletail and by the new lifeboat station is dicey.
Fitties end is very dodgy. There have been more signs put up recently.
In the 80s, as a kid, I walked almost to the fort on the humber. Thankfully I was quite light then but it was scary going in up to my knees with noone about.

Enjoy the rest of your time here, we're all very friendly and there's lots to do.

No, you stay at chest height because your lungs act as floats
