Anyone else love a really firm mattress?

Went mattress shopping recently, found it really hard to get a good solid mattress. Am I in a minority? The number of people on here who love mattress toppers (shudder) make me full like I might be. Lighthearted chat obviously! But can't sleep on a soft mattress.

My DP recently got one from John Lewis. We joke it's like a plank of wood, but he loves it! It is very supportive

Me. And really, really firm pillows. Watching this thread with interest.

I've always preferred a firm mattress - just moved the spare double into my room as its very new and the mattress is a medium/firm. I am having back and hip problems for the first time in years.

Yes! We went mattress shopping and they were ordered by firmness and we basically got to the very end one. Luckily me and DH are both the same.

We like a firm mattress. Our sofa seat foam has also been replaced so that we now sit atop rather than in the seat.

Agree and looking for recommendations!

Everydayimshuffling1 · 23/04/2025 09:01

Yup. Absolutely hate memory foam of any kind. It's like sleeping in a ditch

Gundogday · 23/04/2025 09:06

Yes, prefer a firmer, but not plank of wood mattress. We got one from a local independent furniture store when we brought our bed. It wasn’t cheap.

I'm pretty close to plank of wood territory actually

DH does and I don't. So we have a firm king size mattress. I have a memory foam topper on my side only so am about 6cm higher up than dh. 😁

sealy orthopedic is like a block of wood. DH loves it.

stripedrollerskates · 23/04/2025 10:59

Always found Dreams good for firm mattresses.

TeflonMom · 23/04/2025 10:59

yes! Wayfair do a great firm mattress called Murcia pillow top pocketsprung. I liked it so much I got a second one for my son’s room

Hoplolly · 23/04/2025 11:05

Absolutely. I don't want it to budge when I lie on it.

A firm mattress is great when you test it in the shop. But a few weeks down the line and you’ll have hip and shoulder pain you’ll regret it.

I don't agree as I always have a very firm mattress, however I get pain from a soft mattress which doesn't offer support

I’ve had mine for ages and I’m sure they were tempur but I can’t find them on their website, so maybe discontinued now. There is a similar pillow by Emma and reviews say it’s really, really firm. Cheaper than Tempur too. I like mine so firm I could probably use a plank of wood.

Gundogday · 24/04/2025 19:48

Had a look at our mattress earlier.

It’s a Dunlopillo Millenium, but I’m not sure it’s made anymore. It wasn’t the cheapest of mattresses. It wasprobably the second or third mattress down from the firmest mattresses we tested, but not on the soft end of the scale.

Theeasypeasywoman · 24/04/2025 19:57

I have been raised in India and we use cottong wool mattress which is the firmest mattress you can find on the planet and have never had back issue. last 10 years living in UK, Used sping mattress for first 6-7 years and my back felt it all and developed back pain. using Emma mattress since last 4 years and Its actually better than spring mattress but atill gives me back issues many times. but whenever I travel to India, I have always felt my body posture so much better because I just sleep better on firm cotton wool mattress and they are usually custom made according to your preferences thin/thick/whatever size and thickness you need but best for your back.

Love a firm mattress - maybe because I sleep face down? How do other people find their sleep position affects their mattress choice? (But I like a feather pillow that I can punch and pummel into shape).

We have two beds, both with a John Lewis Natural Collection mattress (so Harrison Spink) - both claim to be 'medium' - but one is on a sprung divan base, the other on a slatted base - and the divan one is soo much firmer... I'm thinking of changing the slat bed to a divan, form over function...

When you tell bed sales people you like a firm mattress, they never seem to believe you though...

SwedishEdith · 24/04/2025 20:23

We've got a John Lewis Natural one as well. The saleswoman at the time told us that the firmness level is really about the sleeper's weight. Presumably to do with how much you'll sink into it.

Compash · 24/04/2025 20:38

Interesting, @SwedishEdith ... I do prefer our divan one because it's the type you can turn both ways instead of just top to bottom - it's a few years older than the slat one - I guess they seem to be going that way now?

They claim it's the same quality but I don't think so.

Not true. I've had my firm mattress for 4 years, its still perfect. Never had hip and shoulder pain in my life.
