"powerful higher education lobby"? Hilarious. So powerful they've seen cuts to funding for years.

"If universities go bust, I am not that disappointed" - well you'd be letting down whichever cohort was caught in the crossfire. And -

"The estimated total benefit to the UK economy from 2021/22 first-year international students over the duration of their studies was approximately £41.9bn, while the estimated total costs were £4.4bn. This implies a benefit-to-cost ratio of 9.4."

"The economic impact is spread across the entire UK, with international students making a £58m net economic contribution to the UK economy per parliamentary constituency across the duration of their studies. This is equivalent to £560 per member of the resident population."

From a London Economics study.

So really we should be asking him how will he replace this money.

He has no unis in his constituency so is also probably unaware* of the economic benefit to a community of having universities. Often called The Lincoln Effect.

*note irony. He bloody well should be aware.

A “confidential” memo (leaked to the Tele) projects that the Conservatives will lose control of all the councils they are defending — as well as all the mayoral elections taking place

Expectations management 😬

I'm nervous!
I live in a reform area and they are all bashing the keys on their keyboards saying they are voting for reform.
Urgh.

Are you saying that you have a Reform run Council already. They must be doing something right then if people want to vote them in again.

Unlikely. They’ve only got 113 councillors in the whole UK.

Anyone would think this was a GE rather than some council and mayoral elections.
I haven’t voted yet but will do later.

Thought this was interesting- L/Ds might do nicely out of Jenrick/Farage pact.

“Amid calls from some Tories to 'unite the right', Conservative and Reform UK voters are split on a merger of the two parties

There aren't any Reform run councils. Most of the councils up for re-election are Tory run.

Ah maybe they have a Reform Councillor who is very good with local issues. Tried to Google mine but couldn't find out much about him.

Or it might be that they live in the Lincolnshire constituency with a reform MP and where there is a vote for Lincolnshire mayor taking place. The delightful Andrea Jenkyns is standing for Reform, there.

Oh no thank god.
But I'm equally in 30 pence lees nearby constituency and his shit is sparkly according to a lot of the keyboard warriors round here.

Llttledrummergirl · 01/05/2025 19:19

I've done my usual for local elections. I've voted for the candidate that lives within walking distance of my house. The exceptions to my rule are anyone on the extremes- I want sane and boring.
If somehow we do end up with reform, I will happily ask many questions around policies and push for answers and time frames. Grin

Is Andrea "finger" Jenkyns favourite to win?

I sincerely hope not, she was bloody awful when she was a Tory dread to think how even more awful she would be representing Reform.
must admit I’ve tuned out the last few days, just the thought of Reform crowing & becoming even more insufferable than they already are turns my stomach.

I tried a tactical vote for my mayoral. As the way mayoral votes worked was changed under Sunak ( can’t think why 🤣)
Sadly my local council elections felt like a “none of the above “ but I did vote for (imo) least worst.
I was surprised the polling station had a steady stream when went to vote but it was around 5pm

BIossomtoes · 01/05/2025 20:15

We’re away from home so sent our postal votes in last week. We cancelled each other out as usual.

I am bracing myself for Reform victories. We just have to grit our teeth and wait for the insanity to pass.

How Labour reacts will be key. If it tries to out-Reform Reform, it will be a tragedy. I feel very sad that we are at this point. If Labour had been braver things could be looking very different.

Notonthestairs · 01/05/2025 21:36

I’m sure there will be plenty of Reform victories tomorrow- whether that changes the political landscape in quite the way trumpeted by some remains to be seen.

Voting station busy(ish) at 9pm but that isn’t unusual for my ward.

DuncinToffee · 01/05/2025 22:18

Kuenssberg is already celebrating a Farage victory, the Tory-Reform overlap

I never have any idea what DH votes. He's not right wing and despises Reform but he's not the most enthusiastic leftie, either. Doesn't help that he's been obsessed with US politics for years but if I talk about British politics I often have to explain who it is I'm talking about.

🤢 I hate the thought of her being jubilant.

Evenstar · 01/05/2025 22:33

I wish we had an angry 😡 react @DuncinToffee I was itching to throw something at the TV, I can’t bear her. I hope Reform do really badly and seeing her fuming would just be the icing on the cake.
