Mumsnet doesn’t count. I’m talking about FB, instagram, X, Rumble, and sky blue etc

Good God - is this what the world has come to? SM as an authority on news?

@Thejazzzyou really are missing out …

I’ve had Radio 4 on during most waking hours for the past 60 years. Grew up with the BBC TV news + other news programmes, and the daily broadsheet newspapers. Now - wake up with the Today programme (R4) while skimming Sky, Al Jazeera, The Times, FT, New York Times, anything else that takes my fancy. I’m less likely to watch all the evening BBC TV programmes these days - as I watch less terrestrial TV. But it’s all in the palm of my hand as required.

I do know people who actively distrust the BBC, having seen events in their own countries mis-reported, and I accept that. I don’t blindly trust everything I see or hear, but I try to get a reasonably broad variety of points of view (obviously not all listed here).

But the idea that I’d make unaccountable SM outlets my main source of information is laughable.

feriamen · 20/04/2025 15:20

Mainstream media websites - BBC, Guardian, Mail, Evening Standard, local newspapers. Telegraph and Times if someone's mentioned a particular story (but takes more effort to get past the paywall). I will look on X if there's a breaking news story or if there's a story with a sleb injunction (I can rarely guess myself but there will usually be some guesses on there).

Nandortherelentles · 20/04/2025 12:39

I don’t get any news. At all. Couldn’t tell you what’s going on outside of chosing my new kitchen worktops. It’s bliss (and I never believed half of it was true anyway).

Same, it's lovely! And my MH is so so much better.

FrillySocksAndDocs · 20/04/2025 15:27

I'm not on any social media. I would check BBC for the news

Onesailwait · 20/04/2025 15:35

News sites are banned from Facebook & Instagram here in Canada. I look at BBC, CBC, local news & online newspapers.

Sesma · 20/04/2025 15:39

The BBC, social media is not proper news

Sesma · 20/04/2025 15:40

I also read the papers on PressReader, a free service from the library

canthavethatonethen · 20/04/2025 15:40

If I ever see anything on social media, I wait until it has been confirmed by official mainstream news channels, either television, radio or broadsheet newspapers.

Sesma · 20/04/2025 15:41

Have we been invaded by idiots today

DinoLil · 20/04/2025 16:11

I'm not on any social media apart from here.

My news comes from BBC, Sky News and I use a Times subscription that a friend has.

Bjorkdidit · 20/04/2025 17:51

I don't understand how this can be a serious question.

'FB, instagram, X, Rumble, and sky blue etc' is not 'news' and anyone who thinks otherwise should have their voting rights revoked.

B1indEye · 20/04/2025 18:15

I can only agree with everyone else, what kind of person with a brain thinks that you get news solely from SM, madness

daisychain01 · 20/04/2025 18:18

Never been on TikTok, insta, X (Twitter for about 2 weeks before coming off it).

Came off Facebook years ago, never missed it.

i get all my news from validated news sites and the radio.

I do get a lot of info on here, eg Ukraine, Gaza, current SC ruling etc.

everything else is dross and a waste of time.

Natsku · 20/04/2025 18:35

I use social media but I don't get my news from it! I get my news from proper news websites and I'm subscribed to the online version of my local newspaper (and for some reason get the occasional paper copy in the post, don't know why I do)

Me too.. it’s all doom and gloom, death, prices going up, disasters etc.. can’t do anything about it so don’t need the depressive thoughts.

FairKoala · 20/04/2025 18:38

The only news I see is on newspaper headlines when going into pay for petrol or DS discussing Trumps latest carnage creating outburst

Istgisforreal · 20/04/2025 18:39

sciaticafanatica · 20/04/2025 14:49

I’m actually shocked that someone was using social media for news

Me too

GingerLiberalFeminist · 20/04/2025 18:41

Bbc news app, guardian news app and a news aggregator called "Squid". BBC Radio 4 is on almost all the time at home too. That pretty much covers me.

Zanatdy · 20/04/2025 18:43

I was on Tiktok briefly last year, and anyone who gets news from there is mad. It was around the time of Jay Slater going missing that I came off. Grown women running all day phone in’s speculating what happened to him, convinced some far fetched reason was to blame. Deleted the app. BBC is much better source of news. I am up at 5 daily, and watch the breakfast news every day.

Game0fCrones · 20/04/2025 18:45

Notice OP hasn't been back ...

Funny that.

How can you live without knowing about or wanting to discuss current affairs, politics, world events etc? You must live such a small, restricted and limited life in your tiny bubble, and be a very unrounded person.

Loveduppenguin · 20/04/2025 19:13

Usually the radio or other people and if I hear of a particular issue and I would like to know more then I’ll look it up myself.

Because I just couldn’t give a shit. I don’t care about who is blowing who up, what war is going on, what daft thing some samey-samey government in power is doing.

I don’t care. I’m happy.

HiRen · 20/04/2025 19:32

My MIL gets her news from Instagram.

When she told me this I actually didn’t understand (don’t have Instagram myself). Apparently what she means is she has followed/liked/joined various news channels - CNN, MSNBC, BBC etc - so when she’s checking her feed she’ll see posts of various grandchildren and friends, nieces and siblings, then a same-sized post from CNN about a tornado somewhere or tariffs, then something from her local supermarket, a post with a recipe from Martha Stewart, and then back to her DD’s posts about whatever holiday she’s on. If there’s something “big” going on in the world, she’ll switch on the TV to one of the 24hr news channels.

She’s unashamed about letting Instagram be her filter. She will happily tell you she doesn’t need or want to know what’s going on because she’s ready for a quiet and comfortable life now (they’re wealthy and live a very nice life) and she can’t handle the stress anymore. And besides, nothing will change (she does vote). All she cares about are her children and grandchildren, and if they’re ok and happy then she doesn’t need or want to know anything else.

pimplebum · 20/04/2025 19:35

Social media is biased and unreliable

never occurred to me to use it for news
