What exactly does it involve. making the chocolate process ?does it vary depending on the upcoming season ? Do the dcs get to get involved?

Is the shop cheaper than supermarkets

It's more of a theme park type place with a bit of history thrown in you used to be able to see the factory but you can't anymore

GettingMySpringOn · 19/04/2025 13:43

Oh OK thank you

DH and I went about ten years ago. It was worth going as we were in the area. I recall there was some kind of info movie, a ride, an opportunity to fill a cup with chocolate and toppings and a gift shop. I'm not sure it was super cheap tbh as we didn't buy much. It's not a traditional chocolate factory experience.

It was the most disappointing 'attraction' i have ever been to , it was soulless and boring and i was surprised how little imagination had been put into something regarding chocolate made in a historic factory with such an interesting history .
It could be so much better.

Naturewalksandchocolate · 19/04/2025 14:18

I went there a few years ago. Definitely over priced, overcrowded and the queue times were very long. Would not recommend.

modgepodge · 19/04/2025 14:18

It’s an ok day out but I think expensive for what it was (I went on a school trip as a teacher so paid nothing, and the kids themselves paid a reduced rate I think).

theres a Mayan rainforest area with the history of that. Then a film about his chocolate is made and an old fashioned village set up like where the first Cadbury shop was I think. They get to have a go at writing/drawing with tempered chocolate, then eat a little pot with different toppings. I think possibly they can watch bars being hand decorated? And old Cadbury packaging/tins on display. There’s a little ride they go on I think. There’s also a 4d cinema which was very good. I think there’s maybe a museum bit too but we didn’t spend much time there so I don’t remember it. Each kid was given 4 or 5 bars for free as we went round. It was a good day out but as I say when I saw the normal entrance fee I was shocked. I think the shop was actually pretty expensive.

doreeen · 19/04/2025 14:20

Have a look on TikTok there’s some good videos of a day at the attraction bit by bit and reviews.
I went years and years ago and considered taking DC but it looks like it’s not really worth the price and I’d rather do something else with the money.

We used to go a bit as we loved nearby but that was when it first opened. Parents went a couple of years ago with brother and said it was rubbish. That the rainforest bit with the samples of the cold, bitter chocolate drink has gone and the factory bit.

It wasn't a theme park at all at first, it was great. I think it's lost a lot.

I only went 18 months ago! The rainforest was definitely still there then but no sample of bitter chocolate drink on offer. Not sure what you mean by the factory bit…you definitely don’t get to look round the actual factory, that’s for sure.

Yes, you used to be able to go round the factory. Saw great slabs of Dairy Milk coming off the line and being cut up. There was a bit where they were hand decorating small chocolates and they'd pass one through to you once in a while.

Maybe it was just the sample itself my mum was so annoyed about not being there anymore from the rainforest bit

Energe · 19/04/2025 15:11

It’s shit

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 19/04/2025 15:16

Went years ago and decided it was the worst family attraction I’d ever been to. Very long time ago though. Like 09 maybe. Felt very tinpot.

DappledThings · 19/04/2025 15:19

Just checked and it opened in 1990 which fits with my memory of going a few times in the early to mid-90s. I probably last went in about 1996. It was great then. Sounds like they removed a lot of what made it good.

GettingMySpringOn · 19/04/2025 15:22

Thank you .
I think we'll give it a miss unless we tie it in with something else when we're up that way.

How old are the kids? there is a science museum and the sealife centre and of course the lego discovery in Birmingham itself

Not as part of Cadbury World experience you haven't.

Factory trips might have happened prior to that, I don't know.

Cadbury World was great when it first opened. I took school children there a few times over the years, but it became too crowded and they were rushing you through.
I haven't been for years. Funnily enough, a friend went last week (took her dd and gdc who live abroad but were home for a visit). I know they all enjoyed it very much. I think there is quite a bit there that is interesting if you've never been.

Interesting. Must be an embellished memory. There was definitely a bit where they were hand decorating chocolates and passed them over, maybe it was just a small room doing just that rather than in the factory. And maybe the bit where I saw the big slabs of Dairy Milk was part of the video installation of the making process and in my childhood mind it's become a memory of actually being there.

The samples of cold, bitter chocolate drink in little paper cups I've definitely not invented!

Plonv · 19/04/2025 16:43

You don’t get as many goodies/samples.

I went there in 1990 and got 5 Wispa mug sets. Each had an egg, mug and two Wispa bars.

Why aren’t there as many mugs and

lucky to get a Heroes sized Twirl now.

I probably went about 15 years ago and you could see the factory…. I went a couple years back again and it’s changed. Can’t see the factory, more like a museum and overpriced chocolate.

Not a place I’d go to again.

Givemebackmygirlhood · 19/04/2025 17:59

We went last October after a disappointing visit to Warwick castle. We went late afternoon and it was quiet - no queues by then. It was interesting to learn about the history of Cadbury and about Bourneville. We were each given four full sized chocolate bars on our way around and then we went to the shop and bought loads of much cheaper chocolate bars. It was a fine way to spend an afternoon - but probably better as it wasn’t really planned and saved us from a disappointing morning.

I would agree with this.

Topseyt123 · 19/04/2025 18:25

We went 20 years ago and you could definitely go round the factory then (as we did).

Maybe that isn't much there anymore because didn't Cadbury move much of their production abroad? I'm thinking of Mondelez in Poland? Maybe moved it again since then too.

I saw parts of the functioning factory ,some of the other places we walked through were obviously also previous factory areas but not in use other than walk through with nothing to see.
Has been a few years ago since i went.

Plonv · 19/04/2025 20:01

I remember going to the factory and shown how the bases of the bars have Cadburys stamped on them. Embossed sheets.

Think

princessrapunzel · 19/04/2025 20:06

I went about 9/10 years ago and i definitely went around the factory, saw loads of the machines with the chocolate and the workers sorting them out.
I was very disappointed though, not what i imagined it would be. But hopefully its changed a bit now
