If I say "See you next Saturday" on Thursday... When will I see you?

In 2 days, or a week and 2 days?

To me "this Saturday" is in two days, next Saturday is the one after...

I'm so glad someone has said this, and also that MOST people agree that NEXT Saturday is in 9 days.

We asked for a workman/tradie to come around this one time (it was a Wednesday when I spoke to him,) and I said 'we're free all next week, if you wanna come give us a quote, what about next Friday?' He said 'yes, see you then.' TWO days later, we were out shopping, and he texted us asking where we are as he was waiting at our house. I phoned him and said 'it's next Friday we agreed on.' he said 'Im here on the next Friday.'

I was like Confused We had to drop everything and rush home as he was waiting for us!!!

I have experienced several other people too who think like this. Same kind of wackos who think the 21st century started on 1st January 2001! 😂 (When it was actually 1st January 2000.)

Glad to see most Mumsnetters have common sense!!!

You’re correct. My son and I have almost fought to the death over this! 😂 I’m so glad you started a thread! It’s my proof!

It doesn't prove anything other than that there are different views which clearly you already know.

No answers here are a worldwide strictly enforced interpretation 😃

Sensible folks use their words to clarify if they aren't sure

Everybody's week starts on a Sunday, per my post.

Sorry, missed that 🥸

I would seek say "this Saturday" and "Saturday 26th", to avoid confusion. I would also, today, refer to "this Monday" but might switch to "next Wednesday" and by the weekend "this week" and "next week" are interchangeable!

And I shall be firmly covering your reply with my fingers as I swipe through ‘my proof’! 😂😂

riverislandjeans · 17/04/2025 14:27

Not the point of the thread but who's week starts on a Sunday??

My week starts Monday and always has

itsgettingweird · 17/04/2025 14:33

“Next” for me would be the Saturday the following week.

“This” would be the one the same week.

Hit I’d check because people do mean different things!

ThisWOMANWontWheesht · 17/04/2025 14:35

Ordinarily “This Saturday” is a few days away and “Next Saturday” the one after.

But! It can vary depending where in the week you are. If it’s Sunday, “Next Saturday” could mean the next one coming, not the one after because it’s a bit of a way away. Or “Next Wednesday” is the soonest Wednesday if someone says it on Thursday!

Enrichetta · 17/04/2025 14:40

I use 'on' rather than 'this' Saturday vs 'next' Saturday.

However, unless it - whatever 'it' is - is later today or tomorrow, I always confirm the actual date in writing, either email or WhatsApp.

Lundier · 17/04/2025 14:41

Next Saturday is ambiguous, but Saturday next clearly means the Saturday after the next one.

Lundier · 17/04/2025 14:41

That's way more ambiguous. Unless you say saturday next week, I wouldn't be sure whether you meant this saturday or next saturday.

HiRen · 17/04/2025 15:43

This has been the root cause of many an argument in our house, not helped by a DH and a DD who insist that the week starts on a Sunday (they have no answer to why a week would start half way through a weekEND).

I'm with you. Anyone who disagrees is completely wrong.

Whoarethoseguys · 17/04/2025 15:43

I would ask to make sure because it could be either.
I think I would either say "see you on Saturday ' or see you a week on Saturday ' as it's much clearer

Exactly! Who, in real life, thinks that the week starts on a Monday? Confused

andtheworldrollson · 17/04/2025 12:50

Next Saturday is the next Saturday… so 2 days time

ill skip this bus as it’s full and get the next one - you wouldn’t mean 2 buses time

But there are two buses in this scenario? “This” bus which you’re not taking because it’s full. And the “next” bus which you’re now planning to get.

MadKittenWoman · 17/04/2025 15:49

Of course the week starts on Monday, unless you're American!

DustyMaiden · 17/04/2025 15:51

I agree with you.

What's being American got to do with it? Sunday is the traditional first day of the week. You'll still see loads of calendars and diaries set up that way.

JaneJeffer · 17/04/2025 12:27

This is why we use Saturday week in Ireland

Came here to say the same. Mind you in England I would presume a week and two days.

ohyesido · 17/04/2025 15:58

9 days later.

Well they're wrong.

Wrong that they are sticking to the older tradition?

FeelingLessTired · 17/04/2025 13:57

And now I have read the word 'Saturday' so many times it sounds like a made-up word.

Yes the UR is starting to look weird 🤣

But 99% of people don’t think like that here, of course Monday is the start of the week.

Doesn't make it wrong to think of Sunday as the first day. Just unusual these days.
