Government Ruling on Equality Act for Transgender definition

What is everyone’s views on the outcome?

“The unanimous decision of this court is that the terms woman and sex in the Equality Act 2010 refer to a biological woman and biological sex”

I’ve always been supportive of the trans community and even though the outcome might not be what some agree with, they will still be protected.

There are a couple of long threads already 🙂

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 16/04/2025 14:46

Of course they will still be protected.

My view is that it shouldn't have taken a Supreme Court judgment to confirm that 2+2=4.

CaptainFuture · 16/04/2025 14:58

What are you supportive of the trans community having that they don't have already?

MummytoE · 16/04/2025 15:00

Common sense has prevailed , finally

I support them in choosing to be transgender if that’s how they feel comfortable in themselves.

I have seen lots of awful things past and present being said about how people choose to live their lives as trans.

If you're interested in this then have a look at the (very active) "Feminism: Sex and Gender" topic.

Isn't it a supreme court ruling, not a government one?

If you're interested, one of the existing threads: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5312104-fws-v-scottish-ministers-will-be-handed-down-weds-16th-april-at-945am?page=35&reply=143590258

Though as PP said, others are available.

Yes its a supreme court ruling

This is quite vague.

Supporting William's decision to adopt the name Lia, use "she/her" pronouns and wear women's clothes is not the same as supporting Lia's decision to then compete in women's swimming events and use communal showers with female teammates.

Where do you draw the line?

Yes, which I believe means it can't be appealed or overturned? It's good news for women's rights and protections.

Trans people will be fine, they just might have to use certain facilities based on their sex (and always should have tbh). Can't see the issue.

The government don't make rulings.

The government makes policy.

Parliament makes laws.

The courts interpret and enforce those laws.

Today's ruling can't be overturned unless parliament pass new legislation to make it obsolete.

They can choose to be transgender, they always could. Literally nobody tried to take that away from them?

BelfastBard · 16/04/2025 15:19

They’re still transgender. And afforded protections and rights the same as anyone else. They’re just recognised as being their biological sex for the purposes of law.
