Worried DS knows nothing

He starts school in September. Every so often I get a mad panic that he knows nothing.

He doesn’t know about money, at all. Obviously I never pay using cash so he doesn’t recognise notes and coins as I probably did at a similar age.

Doesn’t know his letters. He can sort of recognise his own name. We do read but again I feel like he’s losing interest a bit.

He doesn’t really understand the concept of countries or anything like that.

He knows about nature … I’ve tried to explain a bit about the seasons and months of the year but he seems to be confused.

Have I done a terrible job? Or will school sort all this out?

Hopefully @crumblingschools - will find out tomorrow!

I work in a shop and you would be astonished at the number of teenagers who can't count out money. They just fling a handful of coins in my direction and I carefully count out the right money and give them the rest back. I enjoy doing this with the smaller children (where it's usually Mum/Dad teaching them about money), but I do get a bit tight lipped about the teens.

@somethingelseinthebox fingers crossed for your school choice

Has your DC attended preschool at all? My DS is younger, 3y4m and he’s been learning all this already at preschool. Doesn’t mean he “knows” it all but definitely has a grasp on these concepts. And he’s not even in the “school readiness” group at his preschool yet as he won’t be starting school till next year.

Yes, he’s been at nursery since he was 10 months and he’s been in the preschool bit since being about two and a half.

With the trousers the wrong way, is the label at the back? If not sew something in, or mark it.

Yes, and the drawstring at the front. We’ll see.

Please try not to worry, my DC is older now but I remember stressing about the same thing and it all evens out once they start school honestly!
A friend of mine said this is good to give ideas stuff you can do at home, not sure if it helps as it's been a while since it was starting school time here sadly! Www.twinkl.co.uk/readysetschool

Between now and September is a long time in a child’s life and he’ll have learnt a lot by then.
There’s no reason that he can’t learn these things by then or even over the next year or so.
Dont assume school will sort everything out though. Parents still need to have a huge input with their kids learning.

Oh lovely slow down!! No school is going to expect a child starting in Early Years, to know about money, countries or even letters! Start with the very basics - Is he confident enough to speak to his teacher and articulate his needs? Can he wipe his own bottom when he's been to the toilet? Can he wash his hands? Can he get himself dressed/undressed? Can he follow instructions if asked? Can he sit and listen (for say 10 minutes)? Learning letters, reading etc will all come once he's taught. It's not a requirement that your child should already know these things prior to school. The basics I have mentioned are probably the important ones. Communication is probably the most important.
