Best flight snacks

I'm always starving on flights and can't bare plane meals. I've got a 7 hour flight coming up. Can anyone recommend good plane snacks I could take that don't take up too much room and aren't too stodgy? Thank you.

Also any tips for reducing the weight of my suitcase would be great. It's not overweight but I'd like it to be as light as possible as I'm going to and from the airport on public transport. Thank you.

The only way to reduce the weight of your luggage is to pack less! 😂

Well I'm aware of that but are there tips and tricks for packing less?

Do you often try to make people feel stupid?

I'd go for pringles the small tubs, cereal bars, and something like this from Iceland so you get lots of variety.

For packing lighter I would plan to buy stuff there like toiletries and throw them before coming back. Wear your heaviest pair of shoes and clothes to travel in

That’s so wasteful though

I know but if it's a one off and op has to travel on public transport to get to the airport it's a good way to lose some weight in her case

savoycabbage · 13/04/2025 20:49

I’d take a sandwich and some fruit.

WinterMorn · 13/04/2025 20:49

I always save toiletries that are nearly at the end and then take them on holiday with me, so I don’t have the weight coming back.

vandelier · 13/04/2025 20:51

Minimum number of shoes, minimal make up and toiletries, lay out your stuff on the bed and remove at least one item from each pile. Then do that again. You will still come back with stuff unworn. Like me.

You need to be ruthless and brave, so no "I might need this, I might wear that" etc. No bulky clothing. Layers if you going to cool climate. But having said all that, once your case is within weight limits what the heck, don't stress. Unless you want plenty of room to bring back some purchases.

Where you going anyway, come on.... spill.

abbey44 · 13/04/2025 21:06

Work on a co-ordinated colour palette for your outfits. Hang all your holiday clothes up before you pack and make sure everything goes with at least two other things. You can make loads of different outfits with a few carefully chosen separates and nobody will notice that you’re wearing some of the same things again. For example and depending gmwhere I’m going, I’ll take a pair of black or navy shorts/trousers and a pair of white ones, then a selection of tops that go with both. A couple of dresses that can be dressed up or down for either day or evenings….you get the idea. Good luck and have a fabulous holiday!

I decant toiletries into travel containers. I bought a set of 4 small silicone pots with press-on lids from Amazon (great for thicker creams like moisturiser) and a set of 3 plastic and bamboo ones from Boots, which are better for thinner liquids like toner or body lotion, etc. I put just enough in each to cover my needs for however long I’m going to be away. Most of my toiletries come in glass bottles and jars, so these little pots save so much weight, but also space, in luggage.

Defiantly41 · 13/04/2025 21:52

Where are you flying from? Best plane snack/meal ever is the (expensive) picnic from Plane Food Gordon Ramsay in LHR T 5. Everyone around me had food envy

otherwise, nice sandwiches/ crisps, salad, fruit pot, cereal bar etc from Pret airside unless you have allergies

Rocknrollstar · 13/04/2025 21:55

Don’t take anything with nuts in onto the plane because they can announce w that someone has an allergy and you shouldn’t open them.

coxesorangepippin · 14/04/2025 02:17

Dried fruit

Bjorkdidit · 14/04/2025 02:54

Wear your heaviest shoes and clothes rather than packing them.

Is your suitcase itself lightweight as that can vary considerably? If not can you borrow a lighter one?

Trying to avoid overpacking and minimal toiletries. Kindle instead of books. No tablet, laptop etc unless needed for work.

The airports I use don't have interesting food options but I always get a Boots meal deal and usually get a salad or a wrap, a smoothie and a nice yogurt or prepared fruit pot. Also take an empty water bottle tk refill after security and don't forget a foldable reusable shopping bag.

Cheese and crackers.
gin.

I don't drink alcohol, so this is a hoot - my friend fills a couple of 100ml travel bottles (the type you get in Primark in the travel section) with neat vodka and buys a can of coke in the airport. She has a collapsible cup too. Well travelled and well sozzled 😊

Buy small travel sizes or decant into small containers. Buy when you are there?

ShaunaSadeki · 14/04/2025 10:00

I’m not much help as I love plane food! But when flying short haul and no meal provided I usually just make a little picnic from Pret, but going to look up, and then drool over the Gordon Ramsey option listed above now.

Bodonka · 14/04/2025 10:04

In terms of heaviness, I try and avoid packing stuff that will be available at the hotel - shower gels/shampoo/conditioner unless you need specific ones. I plan to streamline skincare and makeup and only pack minimally (no extras ‘just in case’!)

I preplan outfits and do as much mix/match as I can - normally 2 pairs of shoes (wear the heaviest on the plane) that have to match any outfit I take, I’ll go for a dress instead of trousers/top as often as I can, and maybe take a few jackets/cardigans I can wear over multiple dresses to give different looks. In my head if I’m not wearing an item at least twice it’s not coming!

Just read this out to my DH, he said "genius, we're definitely doing that" 😊🍸

Sadly not going from Heathrow

Dh and I went on a 6 hour flight with no meals or food offered! Didn’t believe it was possible to not even have a snack trolley 😱
just got a sandwich each from pret, you could get one of those - you don’t need an endless supply of snacks! Add a pastry or something if you think you’ll need it.
Usually though if we are there all of us as a family we’ll have a proper breakfast or whatever meal at the airport and then get what we fancy from the trolley. At least airports have a range of restaurants (well, the ones we fly from do but Heathrow and Gatwick are bigger than others I appreciate) whereas when you’re on the plane the choices are more limited!

pizzaHeart · 14/04/2025 18:40

I think it depends what you like. I usually have something at the airport and take some cookies/ small cakes individually wrapped and get myself a drink on the plane. No nuts as someone else mentioned.
