I heard Mr Loverman by Shabba Ranks today.
I was immediately 18 again, and the best thing since sliced bread (of course!)
Just been dropped off to my first year uni halls by my brother and sister and I was feeling homesick already!

Dreams by The Cranberries. Whenever I hear it I’m 17 again. Studying for my A Levels, learning to drive and desperate to leave home. Working weekends in a high street store and drinking Hooch in the pub on a Saturday night after work with my friends before going clubbing. I remember listening to this track in the car when my best friend drove us to school to finally pick up our A level results. We both got the grades we needed to get into uni. We had the world at our feet but we had no idea!

Boy in the Photograph, by Stereophonics.
T in the Park, 1999

The Passenger by Iggy Pop takes me back to being 18, coming out of Barbarellas in Birmingham at 2am in the morning and walking to catch the night bus home. I'd have been there watching some Punk band. I'd walk through the city centre at that time without a care in the world, now I'd be so worried about being mugged or worse. "See the city's ripped backsides, We'll see the bright and hollow sky, We'll see the stars that shine so bright, Stars made for us tonight" Fabulous.

The other song that takes me back to time and place is Jolene which was on the juke box in the Student Union cafe at Bangor University. Hearing it transports me back to sitting with friends eating cheesy chips. It was a perfect time.

How Do I Live by LeeAnn Rimes. I was at an under 16s disco, in a white top split down the middle from under the bust, body glitter all over, denim skirt and my confirmation platform shoes. When that song started playing I had a slow dance with a really good looking boy. He was so tall that even with the ridiculously high platforms he was stooped down and I was up on tiptoes so we went over to some chairs and the back and I sat on his lap. It was the best feeling I’d ever had in my life.
I had a really, really crappy childhood and suddenly I was so hopeful for the future.

Ottis reading sitting on the dock of the bay. We were young sailors ( private yatchs) in gustavia St barts in 1981 before it became what it is now ie:not kool. Anyway the jukebox was playing this song on the dock of the bay and we were having a beer on said dock when the owner of the bar made an appearance. Guess who , yep not ottis but jimmy buffet. Hey we were young

Music is so powerful isn’t it. Just listening to the opening chords of a song can transport you back in time.

The Joker by Steve Miller Band takes me right back to our 6th Form Common Room, where there was a jukebox, and that song seemed to be played a lot.

Hungry Eyes from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack (my favourite from that album) makes me wistful for 14 year old me. I love that song. Me and my best friend Louise rented that video out so many times that summer 😂

David Bowie,Let’s Dance

The hot summer before I started Grammar School.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 11/04/2025 21:25

So many... I made a cd of them once.

Human - The Killers was massive the summer DS was born. 17 years later, it still makes me very nostalgic

Joe le Taxi by Vanessa Paradise

1987 on a college trip to Paris in a seedy bar. Random French guy following us into the toilets and jiving with the French teacher.

17 and not a care in the world!

ShaunaSadeki · 11/04/2025 21:38

Jose Gonzalez “Heartbeats” ill advised, but hot one nighter with someone I should have known better than to get involved with.

MelainesLaugh · 11/04/2025 21:43

“Viva Forever” by the Spice Girls. The first lockdown and I became very good friends with someone who I vaguely knew but that time we were both not working and needed each other. We spoke for hours each day and still day how we got each other through lockdown. We’d pick a random radio station show and listen to it together. It was amazing how often it was played!’

“yes I still remember every whispered word”

tinydynamine · 11/04/2025 21:47

Pink Orange Red by Cocteau Twins...saw the video on TV and was transfixed..Was "revising" for my Highers at the time. Must have been sometime in 1986.

DrCoconut · 11/04/2025 21:53

Boo Radleys, wake up. I'm at a house party post A levels and it's the morning after. My then boyfriend is there and my face is sore from all the snogging. Later on when I get home I will throw up due to all the snakebite and black and try to pretend I have a stomach bug. Meanwhile my friend is frantically cleaning the house ready for her DM coming home 🤣

honeyfox · 11/04/2025 21:59

The Lighthouse Family 'High'

I was working in a busy pub in Edinburgh during the festival, summer of 1998. I was miserable, arrived too late in the season, had no friends (staying with family) and the hours were very long. This song was played constantly. The intro still gets me.

'When you're close to tears remember
Someday it'll all be over'.

Philandbill · 11/04/2025 22:00

Lemon Tree by Fool's Garden. Working abroad in a very sociable environment and it was played at a lot of the evening events. A mad summer when I was happy and spending lots of time with friends and living intensely.

ChippySauce · 11/04/2025 22:24

@LambriniBobInIsleworthISeesYa splinters from a beer garden bench in my arse

and

@DrCoconut my face is sore from all the snogging

actually made me lol 😂

@MelainesLaugh love that song but the trippy music video is freaky!

'Trapped' by Colonel Abrams.

Standing at the bar in The Tube nightclub in Plymouth, watching the video on the screens above the bar and waiting to be served.

18 year old me, slim, gorgeous, new dress,my whole life ahead of me.

DeeDeeDo · 11/04/2025 22:32

Leona Lewis - Run

i absolutely CANNOT listen to it without crying. I was in hospital depressed as fuck, I just gave birth to a 27 weeker.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 11/04/2025 22:42

Nutbush City Limits.
I was probably 13 or 14, at the local travelling funfair, and this was blasting out as I bumped into a boy from school that I had a crush on. Just a moment in time that has stayed with me.

Anything by the Stone Roses takes me back to the summer after my GCSEs. Everyone was wearing bucket hats and flares.

Love spreads is one of my favourite songs.
I like their earlier stuff like Sally Cinnamon as well x

I remember singing wake up boo in the school choir! 🤣

MyWiseGoose · 11/04/2025 22:47

If you're gone by matchbox 20 reminds me of driving back to my apartment during college day in california. The song played on the radio quite a lot.

I car pooled with my colleague who's African American and he played el debarge's where you are. Takes me back to my 22 year old driving on highway 101.

Tommy page you are my everything. I'm 13 again thinking about boys 😬

LillyPJ · 11/04/2025 22:49

'I'm not in love' by 10cc. I was 19 and working in an office. My bf was off work for the day, heard this song come on the radio, and rang me up to play it to me over the phone. I remember exactly where I was, the office layout, what my desk was like. We got married 3 years later and were married for 30 years.

RampantIvy · 11/04/2025 22:50

Afternoon Delight by the Starland Vocal Band, Don't go Breaking my Heart by Elton John and Kiki Dee and Jeans On by David Dundas all remind me of the fabulous summer of 1976 when I was 17.

Eight of us went camping on the Isle of Wight and we had a blast.

Maitri108 · 11/04/2025 22:53

I wanna dance with somebody - sitting by myself, drunk at a disco at about 16, hating the song.

Never gonna give you up - at a school friend's birthday party, standing just outside the door at about 15

Pump up the volume - dancing at a school friend's party getting smashed on wine (later vomited) at about 15
