Cancelled holiday, how can I cheer up dc?

DakCien · 11/04/2025 09:16

Today we should be on our “summer” holiday. We booked it last year and dc have been looking forward to it since they found out we were going. It’s the only holiday we would have this year due to work commitments, so it really has come as a disappointment that it’s had to be canceled.
Dc all woke up sad this morning and I want to cheer them up. I can’t think of what to do. Anyone have any suggestions? We had to cancel due to a family member having an accident so it can’t be anything too physical that we can do.

She talks about sand and a "summer holiday", so it sounds like a beach holiday.

Why wouldn't insurance cover someone with a broken bone? Confused people fly/travel with broken bones and injuries all the time.

Most holiday insurance doesn't cover preexisting conditions, if she's gets an infection from the surgery she's having two days earlier What's going to happen? If she's in serious pain and needs medical attention it will cost a fortune.

I do think there is a risk flying straight after an op. That is why I asked where the holiday was. I know I had to wear compression stockings after my elbow op. When I asked where I could get some to match my wedding outfit the nurse whispered ‘ just don’t wear them for a few hours’.

TipsyRubySheep · 11/04/2025 11:29

Op have you got any really fun holiday clubs you can send the other children to? And maybe let your older dd have a few friends round ever day?

The holiday was in the UK but would include lots of physical activities. Dd would not be enjoying spending the time just watching. Also we would have travelled by train so not as simple as getting in the car and off we go.

If you were on holiday in your area from somewhere else, where would you go? Maybe a slight drive away so it feels like you're doing something exciting. You could do a "staycation " that's an hour or so away so you can get back if she needs to

LardoBurrows · 11/04/2025 11:32

Op, have a look at National Trust's website for "What's on for Families" in your area. There will be Easter egg hunts of course, but you might be able to find something like soft archery for the DC to do and some sites have adventure playgrounds, obviously your DD might have to sit those out, but at least the other DC can run about and let off steam.

What about a picnic by the beach or at a local nature reserve,
or visit to a Wildfowl and Wetlands reserve.

Sealife aquarium.

A ride on a steam railway, I have one local to me run by enthusiasts and there are often special days out during school holidays.

A visit to a smugglers museum, like the smugglers caves in Hastings for example, interesting and a bit spooky.

Horrible Histories Easter Escapades

Check your local library for Easter themed activities, lots are running free craft activities.

Some things your DD will just have to accept that she can't do and will have to sit out with a book or tablet, but the rest of the DC shouldn't miss out on everything just because one child is injured.

You can get specialist insurance that covers broken bones - it might be a bit more expensive, but it's certainly possible. I would have looked into that before cancelling a holiday, that's for sure.

There's no reason to assume a broken bone = no insurance and a fortune in medical bills.

TipsyRubySheep · 11/04/2025 11:23

Why is everyone going on about the holiday? You have literally no idea what kind of holiday it is. If it's abroad her insurance wouldn't cover her and she'd be at risk of having to pay out thousands. If it's an outdoor adventure holiday it will be miserable for dd.

If OP had said she was going abroad uninsured she'd be ripped apart.

She just asked for ideas of what to do.

She's hardly been ripped apart Confused
People are just pointing out that they would have still gone away if they could.
I've made rash decisions in the heat of the moment in stressful situations and when other people have pointed out after that I might have made a decision whilst not being in the right frame of mind I've been able fix it.

Crikeyalmighty · 11/04/2025 11:33

I would still have gone in all honesty if it was plastered up - and just been careful -

Would people really take their dc on holiday with a fractured elbow which required surgery a few days prior to the holiday? To me that would be cruel. Also, imagine sand blowing into the cast! Not worth the risk. No way!

I took my dd on holiday with .a broken wrist she broke it a week before the Easter holidays and we had it booked, it was fine.

gamerchick · 11/04/2025 11:33

Why did you cancel for a broken elbow? I'd have just gone anyway, it sucks to be laid up but it's not as if it's her leg.

Honestly, I'm really shocked you cancelled a UK break for this.

There are tons of things you can do on holiday in the UK with a broken elbow. What a shame for everyone.

We took DS on holiday when his arm was in plaster from hand to elbow.

Just bought a blow up protector to stop the cast getting wet and he spent whole week in the pool.

Did I say she had?

MoreChocPls · 11/04/2025 11:34

have a light dinner and an amazing dessert with different ice creams and lots of different toppings and square cream and things like that so they can make their own sundaes.

KezzaMucklowe · 11/04/2025 11:35

TipsyRubySheep · 11/04/2025 11:33

Oh no whoops sorry. Completely misread your post.

wheretoyougonow · 11/04/2025 11:35

Let them be in charge of choosing dinner and a pudding for one day each - my kids loved that.
On Easter Sunday hide some little eggs around the house/garden
Maybe travel to a stone beach just for the day
Build a fort in the living room
Buy a new game

I hope she feels better soon and I hope your ok as it’s a shock when your child goes for an operation.

Bigfish51 · 11/04/2025 11:35

Did you lose any money? If no then I would have cancelled too.

I’d certainly have asked the hospital for a reason she couldn’t fly or be on holiday before I cancelled. Did you ask and take advice?

If medical advice did not tell you she couldn’t go, then….

i think you’ve been “cruel” to cancel a much anticipated holiday for all the children, including dd who’ll be feeling she’s now spoilt the entire time.
a holiday would have taken her mind off the injury and fact it’s going to be a nuisance and limiting for next few weeks, and maybe stop her doing some stuff like sports where she needs to use her arm

i think you’ve maybe taken an overprotective and catastrophic appraoch, rather than a can-do and risk mitigation approach. Fair enough, but I think it’s you that has stopped this holiday going ahead NOT the fact your child fractured their elbow.

I would have gone on a UK holiday.

TBH I think you've been really unfair to make your other DC miss out because one child had an accident.

Temporaryname158 · 11/04/2025 11:37

It seems a shame you rushed to cancel. You could have bought a limbo which would have kept sand and water off the cast/bandaging.

you weren’t flying so it’s a shame everyone is so sad when you could have gone.

I think all you can do is lots of day trips to fun places but then essentially they could have gone on holiday.

Whinge · 11/04/2025 11:37

I'm really surprised you cancelled a UK holiday, and I don't understand why travelling by train would be a problem. Some of activities might have been physical but children really are incredibly resilient, and you could have swapped things around to find something she could do. She must feel awful that her injury means the entire family are missing out.

BritishFoodFan · 11/04/2025 11:38

I'm slightly agog that you cancelled a UK holiday for this, she may have been a bit upset at not being able to join in with everything, now everyone is upset!

Surely you could have made the best of it?

They were due to go on holiday today, they should have had insurance in place from booking, so it’d have covered the arm - it wouldn’t have been pre-existing when the policy was taken out.

Dinoswearunderpants · 11/04/2025 11:40

You've cancelled a UK holiday for a fractured elbow. You realise you have more than one child. No wonder they're upset.
