Cancelled holiday, how can I cheer up dc?

Today we should be on our “summer” holiday. We booked it last year and dc have been looking forward to it since they found out we were going. It’s the only holiday we would have this year due to work commitments, so it really has come as a disappointment that it’s had to be canceled.
Dc all woke up sad this morning and I want to cheer them up. I can’t think of what to do. Anyone have any suggestions? We had to cancel due to a family member having an accident so it can’t be anything too physical that we can do.

I took my dc on a uk beach holiday with pins and cast.

The holiday did us the world of good. Yes, I had to do a lot of care, but it was no different to being at home and the change of scenery made the whole thing more fun.

You can get cast covers to keep the sand out.

It was mental health healing as much as physical.

What would someone who lives there do if they had broken their arm?

Where there’s a will, there’s a way. Much better than sitting at home depressed.

Following as we are in a similar situation. My 11 year old had an operation 10 says ago and can't go out. Him and his little brother are so bored now they actually asked to go to a national trust property which they would normally whinge about going to.

Limbos are fab, I went on hol with a broken wrist in a plaster cast (split for the plane journey) and had a lovely time

I took my son on holiday with a broken elbow that had pins in it. The only thing it stopped him doing was being able to swim. He had a fab time.

No you are right to not go as you could not get insured! Imagine having a complication abroad. Ignored the silly comments.

Silly comments like those of posters who haven't read that the OP has said it's a UK holiday several times? 🤔

Oh the irony 😂

How about a boardgame cafe - they usually have loads of different games you can try out. Cooperative games are great for children of different ages to play together

Bugaloo77 · 13/04/2025 13:29

To be fair to you it’s not just as simple as a broken arm your dd had pins in and had surgery a few days ago.
When my son broke his arm he had to have surgery and had pins put in and there would have been no way I would have taken him on holiday a few days later. He just wouldn’t have been up for it, he was still in pain could barely move his arm up and down. Then to get on a crowded train would have been absolute hell for him. You know you dd better than anyone!

Would people really take their dc on holiday with a fractured elbow which required surgery a few days prior to the holiday? To me that would be cruel. Also, imagine sand blowing into the cast! Not worth the risk. No way!

My middle child broke his elbow, required surgery / plate and screws put in. It was really painful and needed a lot of tlc. It was months of rest and physio and a second surgery to remove hardware as over a growth plate. No way I’d of contemplated taking him on holiday.

I think if you’ve not experienced it you don’t realise how bad it can be. My youngest fractured her wrist, they popped a splint on and said go easy and regular paracetamol. I’d of happily taken her on holiday a few days later as seemed largely fine.

That would be very boring.

We have 4 grandsons, aged 3-9. All love ten pin bowling!

I fractured my elbow at the same age, a few days before our annual camping holiday to France. My mum told the hospital, and the decision was made that I'd have a sling rather than a cast so that my arm wouldn't feel so hot in the heat. It was a foam thing that more or less disintegrated over the fortnight, at one point it was being tied together with napkins from the campsite bar 😂 I honestly think my mum would have left me at home with grandparents before cancelling the only family holiday of the year... it was different times in the 90s!

Omg I'm howling at the napkin bit. She probably would have left you like Home Alone movie. I broke my elbow 2 years ago and i would have went away if i had a holiday booked

Apart from the fact the holiday was not abroad, insurance should have already been in place. It's pretty foolish to only get insurance right before you leave.

This is exactly what insurance is for!

Would the 9 yr old love it even if they can't lift the ball and can only push it from a ramp?

Edited

Our tall 7 year old doesn’t use a ramp. We have bumpers in tho.

Baconking · 17/04/2025 10:06

That's why it wouldn't be fun for the OP's DD to go bowling. She can't lift the ball and would just be pushing it off a ramp

We have two 3 year old grandsons who love pushing the balls down the ramp and watching their success. They love the snacks, the score boards, the air hockey-everything about going to the bowling alley.
