I don’t. I used to and I miss being in that safe bubble. I still have a look to see what is being reported, but I’m no longer in that place where I just assume what I’m being fed is correct without doing my own research.

I think there is a test of trustworthiness of reporting and that’s finding a topic or story that you know A LOT about and examining how things are reported.

What you typically find is that reporting is inaccurate in the MSM. It just is.

And if they are wrong on a topic you know a lot about, you can surmise they are also wrong about almost every other topics

I couldn't care less what you do or don't do but don't try to pretend you know anything about what's going on if you're not reading anything regarding current affairs.

You're not really making sense.
I know the thread has moved on a little but it's about do peoploe trust MSM, not ther general knowledge on current affairs.
These can be treated as 2 seperate things.
i know, complicated isn't it!

covid by ay chance?

Yep

Like id always been pretty blah about watching or consuming news but now i actively avoid it

MamaAndTheSofa · 11/04/2025 13:56

APATEKPHILLIPEWATCH · 10/04/2025 23:51

Well the press have legal standards and obligations to print articles that are truth or that they have very good reason/evidence to believe are true. If you think k the press have printed lies you must complain to the Press Complaints Commission

Yep, this. I think they can be biased, and sometimes don’t tell the full story, but by and large i think what they print/broadcast is true.

Definitely more trustworthy than a random website with no standards to adhere to.

I read the news until a few years ago.
i see headlines and will often form an opinion on what I've seen.
The fact you read the news doesn't give you any more moral or intellectual right to an opinion.
You also seem weirdly angry that I try to avoid the news as much as possible.

I’m sorry but the statements “you read the news so that doesn’t give you a right to an opinion” and “I read headlines and form an opinion” are just bonkers

of course you can’t form an opinion based on headlines. Of course someone reading news can have a more informed opinion.

Sorry, I assumed a certain amount of literacy. Let me know what isn't clear and I'll try to explain.

The gist of what I'm saying is that you can't have an informed opinion if you know nothing about the subject.

ok, I'll try again.
I used to watch and read a lot of news
I started to think the level of bias from most MSM was distorting the truth of the news too much.
The level of fearmongering and poor scientific opinions in the news during covid meant I lost trust in MSM
I now don't actively engage with any news.
i still have the opinion that I don't trust MSM news.
Is that easier to understand?

COVID was five years ago, therefore you've read no news for five years. You didn't answer my question on how the BBC is corrupt - your informed opinion was 'lol'.

Ineedcoffee2021 · 11/04/2025 14:11

MattCauthon · 11/04/2025 10:55

Well, exactly. He said it. Media reported it. You don't have to agree but it frightens me that people don't understand that media REPORT.

News outlets put politicians, scientists etc on to talk about issues. Those people say things. That's the medias job... to let people in power or with specific expertise say things. Ideally they also challenge those people.and offer other views where appropriate.

The thing is that you don't trust government and you don't trust scientists. Fine. I think a healthy scrptism is good although blanket mistrust is stupid in my view. But stop thinking media make these decisions.

In Aus the media did tell people to shun their families - not only the politicians doing scare mongering in a guest position but the actual news shows hosts too.
They were not in any way 'just reporting' They were using their platform to bully others who didnt agree with the majority on a large scale, to coerce people into shunning family - these were left, right and in the middle shows, not just one side, not just one channel

Mistrust yeah, dont disagree. But i also, i just dont care anymore. As long as my bubble is all good, im happy
I dont need the drama, the hype, the fear, the sadness that comes with news

Since ive stopped watching, my mental health is better, my overall mood is better
So why would i even bother anymore?

the saying 'ignorance is bliss' is damn true

Mightymoog · 11/04/2025 14:19

why don't you ask the pp why they think the BBC is corrupt?
My opinion is I distrust MSM news.
I'm not engaging with you any more as you seem to not be able to grasp the point of the thread.

You do know that lockdown happened in many, many places in the world right?

that the scientific community was united about social distancing (not shunning) being a good mitigation so that health services weren’t overwhelmed?

And that large numbers of people getting vaccinated helped us to emerge to normal again?

ohnowwhatcanitbe · 11/04/2025 14:25

Cecilly · 10/04/2025 23:43

I trust the BBC for the most part. And the Financial Times gives a fair portrayal of what is happening without too much hysteria.

Likewise.

You're not engaging anymore because you don't have anything to say. You haven't read any news in five years and all you can do is repeat that you don't trust MSM. Errrr, good for you I guess.

Gowlett · 11/04/2025 14:28

There’s a few well-known journalists, who’ve broken away from the pack, where I live. Makes you wonder what they’ve seen…

Oh, I didn't know he was a newsreader.

Lockdown - dob in neighbours and family who break the rules - why try create division? Since when does bullying get the desired outcome?

After lockdown
We had tv hosts saying 'if you have friends or family refuse the vax, refuse to see them, shun them till they get the vax'

That dont build trust, that puts me off ever watching again and it sure didnt make me change my mind

Wasn't that government instructions?

Odras · 11/04/2025 14:37

I mean I agree with you about dobbing people in - but that was a Uk government thing again - that the media reported on.

I can’t comment on what a tv host said. But that is an opinion. It is not a report.

wherearemypastnames · 11/04/2025 14:38

peehaps it depends what you mean by mainstream media - the daily mail has never been trustworthy

Whoarethoseguys · 11/04/2025 14:43

I believe it a lot more than I believe some random person on tik tok It you tube who is spouting conspiracy theory.
The BBC, Channel 4, ITV don't deliberately lie it make up facts.
