Do you have a side hustle?

I’m not trying to pinch ideas….well, maybe a bit 😂

My sister has a wee side hustle that’s she’s hoping to be able to do full time one day, selling brownies and cakes etc via mail order. It makes her so happy and I feel like I need some inspiration for a side hustle to give me a bit of cash and happiness.

I used to do a bit of hairdressing on the side, but I developed an allergy to colour!

@Makingpeace I do this too, weekly, I visit charity shops looking for under priced items to sell on vinted and ebay...made around £5000 the last 3 years or so.

I think, I pay the amount the charity shop want so that is my donation and wjat I then do with it is nobody elses business!

My best buy was a £5 vintage Australian by Lapina ravers jacket I sold for over £120.00!

I've reported the MLM recruiter. 🙄 There was bound to be at least one pop their head up!

Nobody is interested in joining your MLM 🤣

Why should @makingpeacedo the charity shops work for them and then give them the proceeds? Daft!

Nothing daft about having a different moral standpoint.

I'm not sure what the moral is.

Charity sells, customer buys, customer sells, another customer buys. Each seller makes a profit.

Summerartwitch · 16/07/2025 13:53

I write articles for a local magazine as a freelance writer and I also started working as a freelance virtual assistant/administrator.

I have a permanent part-time job that I hate (toxic environment/long commute) so I am looking to get more freelance work to give up the permanent role entirely.

I am 54 and I have had enough of being treated like a naughty child and patronised/exploited by clueless managers...

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 16/07/2025 13:58

I am an author as my day job. I work in a supermarket three days a week, so what looks like my main job is actually my side hustle!

Can you clarify what a Carol is, please? I've never heard that one before.

Please! Mlm scenes aim to exploit people. They especially try and exploit mums with young kids who are just trying to get by. Please don’t sign your friends up to your “network”

Your first post on this thread encouraged OP to "message you for more info" - it's like MLM bingo.

Nobody is going to PM you and join your "team".

Guessing it’s misspelling of Karen, meaning mean girls who don’t agree with mlms exploiting people.

You go hun, fake it till you make it, don’t let the disbeliever's get you down. Woohoo

YouOKHun · 16/07/2025 14:18

@WineOClockWarriorwhat is a “Carol”? Is it another misogynistic term like “Karen” designed to shut women up and close down debate, or in this case, silence others very reasonably calling out stealth promotion of MLM? It goes well with MLM which is also manipulates and targets women (over 75% if recruits into MLM are women).

Team building is recruiting and Inteletravel is dodgy AF. Particularly because it’s true purpose is recruitment via PlanNet Marketing. This confuses people about IT’s true nature. It’s strange that a “travel company” had its boom years during the pandemic when there was a global travel ban and when there were a lot of people looking for ways to earn money remotely. I’m just sorry the big expose that was in the pipeline in the media back in 2021 was overtaken by other events because conduct in that company has been shocking and it might have saved a few would be travel agents a lot of money.

@LoveSandbanks I would 100% use an 'older' PT. All of the ones I have seen around here are tiny little gym bunnies in their 20s who completely aren't what I feel comfortable with. It took me ages to find someone who was comfortable working with me (disabled, overweight)

Makingpeace · 16/07/2025 14:23

whackamole666 · 16/07/2025 13:24

I'm not sure what the moral is.

Charity sells, customer buys, customer sells, another customer buys. Each seller makes a profit.

The person who donated them/gifted them to a charity shop intended for the charity to receive the profit.

In this example, a profit has been made but not for the benefit of the charity shop. The items weren't upcycled, they weren't made into something new or different or even altered. Literally just resold at a higher price. The buyer is deliberately exploiting the charity if their intention on buying that bag of mixed items is purely for a resale profit, which this poster openly admitted they do as their side hustle.

Profiteering. Extortion. Exploitation. Whatever you want to call it.

Then there's the other side: it's taking that affordable bag of items away from a person who may be in financial need, who may be vulnerable, who may not be able to afford online second hand prices or buying new, taking it away from someone who has an actual need for it, rather than someone doing it for fun by choice because they can as a side hustle.

SeasaltPuppy · 16/07/2025 14:25

Makingpeace · 16/07/2025 12:18

I'm not sure this would sit right with me.

Do you donate the profit you make back to the charity shop?

They love me - they know exactly what I do. They have a goal to get out and sell 200 items of clothing a day. They have so much stock they NEED to sell them like this to keep up. Theres no space on the rails for anything else. The manager is so happy with me and other sellers - she lists them as Vinted bundles and rings me when they have new stuff. And most importantly to her, it hits their weekly income goals.

I do like to keep my charity donations private because that’s between the charity and myself.

not that you asked but the tax man also gets his right cut.

Okay but I too need the money from selling these items on. My side hustles no longer fund ‘fun things’ but now pay my mortgage and council tax because wages don’t. It’s the reality of my life right now

RabbitsRock · 16/07/2025 14:29

Another charity shop/FB Marketplace one - buying items to sell on at a profit. Let’s put it this way, I won’t be retiring any earlier! I think I need to look at my pricing. Once put a White Stuff dress on for £12 & a woman nearly bit my hand off! Didn’t realise they sold for over £70 new!

SeasaltPuppy · 16/07/2025 14:30

And charity shops exist to raise money for the charity, not to provide affordable clothing. I think a lot of people forget this.

in this instance the clothes are mixed sizes in the bags so they can’t help someone who is in need of cheap clothes really. They’d be wasting money on things that don’t fit. I also only price things at £1-£3 each (and there’s been brands like Phase Eight and Hobbs that I haven’t listed for more than £3!) so others who need to can get a bargain.

I find it weird that you’re so upset about this but not about MLM.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 16/07/2025 14:30

@Makingpeace I think these £2 bags are clothes that haven't sold or are not good enough to be sold individually and so athough donated they consider £2 for a bag better than the 40p they will get for them as rags. if the charity thought they could sell them at £3 each they would be on a rail in the shop but they are bundled up in a random bag at a price they think is okay so if they are happy to sell at £2 the charity have their money

mintsugardress · 16/07/2025 14:30

I’m a TV and film extra. I wouldn’t want to do it full time because the days are long and tiring and the novelty wears off if you do it too often, but I try and do a few days every year.

Exactly this. They’ve been on the rails for weeks.

Charity shops rotate stock around too. By me buying a £2 bag I am saving the charity the cost of transportation of those items.

They told me their rag man doesn’t even pay them - it’s just a way for them to remove the clothes without paying for disposal

I was simply answering the poster that couldn't understand the moral side.

There's always more than one side, I just answered the one that was asked.

I'm sorry to hear you're also affected by the CoL crisis we are all in.
