Dog wagging tail too loudly against fence.

Neighbours are complaining that dog wags his tail and as it hits our fence its too noisy. It's waking them up, they don't want him out in our garden until 8:30am abd also want us to cover the fence with something to stop the noise.... I'm at a loss as to what to reasonably say!

And the fact they are older is relevant because?? Try replacing the word ‘older’ with Muslim or black and see how it sounds.

Sounds...... like the culture of both named groups could result in objecting to the dog not the tail wagging?

Op i'm assuming your dog is not a Chihuahua type breed?
Is the dog wagging on the way out or standing at your door waiting to come back in and tail wagging against the fence beside the NDN? Its going to be irratating if the couple dont need an drumbeat alarm call every morning. I am sure that you are reasonably noise producing as a family in the morning anyway so the whacking sound must be extra loud in their bedroom.

DinoLil · 10/04/2025 08:42

This is the most ridiculous complaint I've ever read on here, neighbours complaining about a dog wagging it's tail.

I do hope your neighbours read this, OP, and reply with a diagram!

FoxedByACat · 10/04/2025 08:50

Just put some plants in front of the fence. Dog can still go out when he needs to but plants will be a barrier and prevent noisy tail wagging against the fence.

I don't understand why he's hitting his tail on the fence? It must hurt if he's hitting it hard enough to disturb the neighbours - is there a reason he's so close to the fence? Does he just like standing in that spot or is there some other reason?

Tbh I'd probably put something in the way so he either doesn't hit the fence or doesn't stand in that spot, it can't be good for him to keep whacking himself like that.

I expect OP has mentioned this because the majority of people would already be up by 8am.

Honestly OP don't worry about it 8am is a perfectly reasonable time for pets or kids to be out.

My neighbours on the other hand whos dog needs a piss at 6am every day and let it bark in the garden can get stuffed.

So the time they think is too early isn't for you so they're being unreasonable, but the time you think is too early isn't unreasonable. Some of us have been caught up quite some time by 6 am,...

It's not ridiculous to ask your neighbours to stop something that is waking you up every morning & isn't difficult to stop, it really doesn't matter what it is.

In my experience, most older people are early risers. I don't understand why the dog wags against the fence. Is he sniffing by the fence, do they have pets?

Yes can we have a diagram and a photo of ddog?

In my many years as a dog owner I’ve allowed them out from 7am onwards ( although small pups has sometimes been a little earlier). They may do a little yap at a bird but I don’t allow them to constantly bark ever. It’s antisocial. I’d imagine the thud on the fence is similar to the annoying thud of my Grandsons basketball. I think it’s ok your neighbours have drawn this to your attention but apart from a covering on the fence ( ? Thick blankets) I don’t see how you can rectify a happy dog wagging his tail. As for him not going out until 8.30 that’s ridiculous, mine wouldn’t be able to hold their urine until that time. Round here there’s outside noise from 6 am

Jennifershuffles · 10/04/2025 09:03

I've heard it all now 😂

LlynTegid · 10/04/2025 09:03

The neighbours have come and spoken to you, seems reasonable as a request. Their age is irrelevant.

The plants idea seems a good one.

Salad666 · 10/04/2025 09:36

Fucking hell. I'd tell them to wear ear plugs if they don't like it. It's a dog wagging his tail FFS. It's not even happening (against the fence I mean) at an unreasonable time, it's 8:30am!!!

My dog likes to go out and sit at the fence, staring and perving on the neighbours, her little tail swishing away on the ground. If they complained about it, I think I'd tell them, kindly, to go fuck themselves.

P.S. if they think a tail is loud, maybe someone in your home should learn to play drums around the same time - they'll wish it was just a little tail hitting a fence 😉.

FoxedByACat · 10/04/2025 10:03

Well it’s obviously not the tail wagging itself which is noisy but an object being repeatedly banged against a fence. Some dogs can’t half thump their tails against an object loudly. I used to have a greyhound with a tail like a rope who would thump loudly against cupboard doors. I can imagine it’s quite loud

user2848502016 · 10/04/2025 10:33

It sounds like they’re being ridiculous tbh, 8am on a weekday is not early. But maybe for the sake of neighbourly relations you could put some plant pots by the fence?

God only knows, dogs do some weird things. Unless the OP comes back with something giving more information, it seems like such a no brainer to just plan to get up near the fence or to put some pots there.🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

There is nothing ridiculous about people having their own sleep schedule, they have simply asked if it's possible to stop the dog making the noise that wakes them up.

Eggsboxedandmelting · 10/04/2025 11:53

What's your ddogs name bloody Digby??
Ignore ignore ignore...

This - I knew a dog who wagged his tail so enthusiastically, banging it against furniture, that the tip of his tail had to be amputated from the damage.
This happened more than once so the owners had to find a strategy for exciting tail-waggy occasions to happen out in the open, away from furniture, so he didn't damage himself again.

Friends’ dog ditto - a very waggly Flatcoat Retriever. He was a lovely boy, RIP ❤️

BakewellTart66 · 10/04/2025 14:29

Enough already with the ageist crap! Did you really need to mention that your neighbours are an ‘older couple’? Did a subsequent poster need to inform us that older people tend to get up early? We are not a mindless herd who all look and behave in the same way.
You would seem to be inviting people to laugh at their (senile) pettiness. Maybe you could just take some simple steps to eliminate what is clearly an irritating noise.

hereismydog · 10/04/2025 14:39

I would put money on him being a Lab Grin

jellyfishperiwinkle · 10/04/2025 14:40

Tell them to get a job. It must make about as much noise as my leaving the house at 7am to work to pay tax to pay for their state pensions.

singlewhitetrashheap · 10/04/2025 14:42

Tell them to fuck off. Christ.

Are you for real? You say "I'm so sorry, I didn't realise this was a problem. We'll keep Fido indoors until 8:30." If you must let the dog out before that, take it on a walk away from your garden.

Actually, the question is, "Are you for real?"

XenoBitch · 10/04/2025 14:48

I would swap you for my neighbour in a heartbeat. They have windchimes.

And no doubt they should do something about the dawn racket too. Those entitled birds need to be taken down a peg.
