Finally lost it with neighbours

There’s four houses on the close - and none for miles (converted country barns - hence the being so close together and yet nothing for miles).

Neighbour A has three cats and all are outdoor cats. Me and Neighbour B have dogs. Neighbour C is irrelevant to this pet debacle.

Neighbours A’s cats, since they moved in, have constantly shit in everyone’s garden. Don’t come at me and tell me it’s not them as the closest village is six miles and no one else has sodding cats!! They sit on the garage and hiss at anyone who goes by and are, quite frankly, obnoxious.

I’ve bitten my tongue but neighbour Cs and B have not. Neighbour B has taken much delight in having their dogs chase the cats off. Neighbour C has invested in barbed wire and other such things to keep the cats out

Yesterday, neighbour A knocked on my door and asked me to call my dogs in as they were ‘destroying her enjoyment of her garden.’ I was very polite - but very firm - and told her to fuck off (not quite that frank, but you get the idea). I’d just finished work, so the dogs had been inside with me so they’d been out about five minutes when she appeared. She launched into a a bit of a diatribe about how B and I have been ruining her summers for years now with our dogs barking and running around.

I snapped. Said her cats constantly shit in my garden and I had to pick it up as I had small children and that her fucking hot tub was obnoxiously loud, so was their music and their shitheaps of cars (her partner always has a rotation of them that he tinkers with) all over the driveway lowered the tone and created exhaust fumes, and that if I ever saw her cats in my garden again I’d be taking a leaf out of neighbour Bs book and setting my dogs on them. Then I told her not to come onto my property again and slammed the door in her face.

It’s a first world problem, I know. But I am just so fucking sick of biting my tongue and being a good neighbour )including taking her fucking parcels) and she has the bloody gall to tell me my dogs can’t be in the garden, as their playing ‘ruins her enjoyment.’

WHAT ABOUT MY FUCKING ENJOYMENT, DEBBIE?!?!

That’s it. That’s all I wanted (just a place to rant)

I wouldn't be surprised. But we kill far more.

Im struggling to find how many humans are killed by cats. If you want stats … last year 7 people died through dog attacks in the uk. I know people will say … « my dog would never do that », and I appreciate dogs come in different breeds and sizes. However, cats do not kill people (probs because they’re too small!) neither do they maim small children. This thread is not about dog v cat, it’s about human behaviour and people thinking they have a right to own an animal but not being able to control the animal or their own behaviour. Weaponising dogs against a cat does not sound like neighbourly behaviour to me and I’m so glad I don’t live next door to OP.

GreatFish · 11/04/2025 12:46

The law is an ass when it comes to allowing cats to run freely leaving a disgusting mess as well as smell. My daughter had this problem while her 3 very young children would step in it and trail through the house. She sorted the problem by collecting cat poo and dumping it outside cat owners door.

kalokagathos · 11/04/2025 13:14

Team dog (as long as they don’t bark, mine don’t :)

Wait - you're the one who accused me of "hating dogs" despite no post of mine suggesting I did.

So I gave it back to you. Don't give out assumptions if you can't take it back, and stop being a troll and 🤡. Do better and enjoy your day.

@DoddlesMcDoddle 🤣🤣🤣 you've proven your argument is moot. You just repeated exactly what I said to you 🤡 I wish you love and light and a day filled with cat 💩 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

DiabeticChocolateLover · 11/04/2025 14:01

Must be alone in being completely on your side OP. Hate cats

You're fucking up the ecosystem, they're also meant to die of infected wounds from rats or fighting, have two litters of kittens a year every year until they die a horrible death and die off from starvation when the numbers get too high due to "living how they should live". That's how animals who live wild live and why efficient native predators don't decimate prey species. You give yours vet care (hopefully) spay them (hopefully) and feed them (hopefully), then let them loose on the ecosystem as a none native predator (domestic cats descend from an african species of cat) with no risk of injury and no natural predator and no end to their killing.
Toxoplasmosis brain will make you deny this, but anyone who likes wildlife and doesn't own a cat knows what they do outside to the ecosystem. Cat parasites make prey animals stupid and lazy and infects humans and domestic pets when you let Tiddles out to shit in someone elses garden, so it's not like the destruction ends at killing them, toxoplasmosis gondii fucks them over even more.
Why does your cat get the benefits of wild living but none of the drawbacks just because you think it's natural? A dog would love to be out mutilating wildlife without a human around and you could argue it's unnatural that they can't. People need to stop buying the current gene pool of half feral random cats that get out and breed successfully and domesticate them into something more suitable as a pet if the current selection of cats hates being a pet so much that keeping them inside is a cruelty, but instead people run out to rescue/buy whatever moggy they can find and think they're doing a good deed ignoring the miserable neighbours and decimated wildlife and kids blind from cat shit they cause with their roaming.

Calm down dear, you’ll give yourself an aneurysm.

Stormyinacoffeemug · 11/04/2025 18:20

Oh no sorry not cats! Wildlife, humans kill more wildlife 😂 laughing at the misunderstanding..

@DoddlesMcDoddle you must have a lot of time on your hands to reply to nearly every comment 🤭 I get I should have said their faeces can cause blindness, so shoot me 🤣
Below is a list of diseases that can be spread by cats.
Campylobacter infection
Cat scratch disease
Cat tapeworm
Cryptosporidiosis
Giardia infection
Hookworm
MRSA
Plague
Rabies
Ringworm
Roundworms
Salmonella infection
Sporotrichosis
Tickborne diseases
Toxoplasmosis
Tularemia
Sounds lovely eh!!!

Or maybe they feel strongly about it. Your list shows that you also have time to Google

There's arguments both sides but you know, pitting a dog against a cat in a human row just tells you everything you need to know.

T1Dmama · 11/04/2025 21:48

The smell will also stress her op’s dogs no doubt!
man’s actually why should she buy products? Her dogs are the perfect deterrent

Op isn’t setting her dogs on the cats literally… it’s just a manor of speech…
my dog would chase a cat off his property, wouldn’t hurt one though.
@FinnalyCracked I wouldn’t have kept my dogs in - you’ve been very patient!
My garden is for mine and my dogs enjoyment… thankfully I have nice neighbours & their cats don’t come in my garden, they’ll walk along the fence or sit on the shed roof but that’s all

Pepsiewomen · 11/04/2025 23:19

I don't think the dogs barking for 5 minutes is a problem but cats shitting everywhere is , also tinkering with cars on the front drive is a definite no no just brings the tone of the neighbours down and a hot tub well I will say no more

DeadSpace3 · 12/04/2025 03:20

OP, you and the other dog owner are the problem here. Cats need to go outside & they need to shit and on that note, you can't train a cat not to shit in a particular garden. You live in the countryside by the sounds of it, so you're surrounded by animal shit anyway.

I hope your other dog owning neighbour is aware of, and prepared for, the consequences if one of their dogs catches a cat & harms it...

Why are you getting so personal? Irrational? Accusations? What do you mean?! There's nothing accusatory there. Your tone is rude & unkind.

You can contol whether you design your garden in a way that ensures your cat can't get out or at the very least provide an attractive pooing area. It's called responsible pet ownership, something must cat owners don't seem to understand.

Have you read their posts to me? They've accused me of things I haven't done, mocked me with emoticons and lied about me. And you are saying I am getting personal by defending myself?

You've got the wrong person!

Onleemoi · 12/04/2025 08:44

I can’t believe the amount of threads we’ve put up with about entitled dog owners when the real villains are cat enthusiasts.

Wasn't even looking for this, just perusing my local news for political news and found this: https://theconversation.com/good-boy-or-bad-dog-our-1-billion-pet-dogs-do-real-environmental-damage-252726

This is true but it's actually a human problem. We buy our animals meat products instead of vegetarian (available & much less harmful for the environment), we purchase breeds that are needing ongoing treatment such as brachycephalic types that cost the carbon footprint due to veterinary care. We buy puppies when rescues are full.

It's a human problem every time.
Cat's by the way can't survive on vegetarian diets, they have to have meat but environmentally red meat is the worst for the environmental crisis so we should be feeding them fish or chicken that doesn't cost so much carbon emissions.

And if we continue demanding unhealthy brachycephalic breeds then not only do these animals have painful shortened lives but they're also costing the environment & their owner stress & financial issues.

Sorry went off on a tangent there!

Ok then....

@Nextdoor55 totally agree with you, I haven’t threatened anyone but @DoddlesMcDoddle has been extremely argumentative on every comment. Some people don't like the fact we refuse to conform to their ideals. Have a fab day 😀

Lying about me saying I hate dogs when I don't and have never even insinuated any such thing, and arguing with me tells us exactly what type of unhappy person you are.

@DoddlesMcDoddle the fact you obviously sit waiting for comments to appear tells us all we need to know about you. I live a very happy life, surrounded by my loving family and my good friends. Not that it has anything to do with you. You have made it quite apparent you prefer cats to dogs. Tbh I'm finding you extremely bitter and boring now 😴 You can reply all you want but I'm not being drawn into your drama. Have the life you deserve 😘
