Finally lost it with neighbours

There’s four houses on the close - and none for miles (converted country barns - hence the being so close together and yet nothing for miles).

Neighbour A has three cats and all are outdoor cats. Me and Neighbour B have dogs. Neighbour C is irrelevant to this pet debacle.

Neighbours A’s cats, since they moved in, have constantly shit in everyone’s garden. Don’t come at me and tell me it’s not them as the closest village is six miles and no one else has sodding cats!! They sit on the garage and hiss at anyone who goes by and are, quite frankly, obnoxious.

I’ve bitten my tongue but neighbour Cs and B have not. Neighbour B has taken much delight in having their dogs chase the cats off. Neighbour C has invested in barbed wire and other such things to keep the cats out

Yesterday, neighbour A knocked on my door and asked me to call my dogs in as they were ‘destroying her enjoyment of her garden.’ I was very polite - but very firm - and told her to fuck off (not quite that frank, but you get the idea). I’d just finished work, so the dogs had been inside with me so they’d been out about five minutes when she appeared. She launched into a a bit of a diatribe about how B and I have been ruining her summers for years now with our dogs barking and running around.

I snapped. Said her cats constantly shit in my garden and I had to pick it up as I had small children and that her fucking hot tub was obnoxiously loud, so was their music and their shitheaps of cars (her partner always has a rotation of them that he tinkers with) all over the driveway lowered the tone and created exhaust fumes, and that if I ever saw her cats in my garden again I’d be taking a leaf out of neighbour Bs book and setting my dogs on them. Then I told her not to come onto my property again and slammed the door in her face.

It’s a first world problem, I know. But I am just so fucking sick of biting my tongue and being a good neighbour )including taking her fucking parcels) and she has the bloody gall to tell me my dogs can’t be in the garden, as their playing ‘ruins her enjoyment.’

WHAT ABOUT MY FUCKING ENJOYMENT, DEBBIE?!?!

That’s it. That’s all I wanted (just a place to rant)

You both should be respectful. I do think she would struggle to keep her cats out of gardens it's not fair for her to keep them inside 24/7 if they like outdoor. You should train your dogs and ensure they are not making mess or barking no way my dog would be outside barking annoying people. You can also put things in your garden such as fresh cut lemons and anti cat citrus spray. Lavender plants all around. It will put them off. Your other neighbour having her dog chase cats is despicable I would be reporting her not supporting her. If you don't like cats just ignore them, cats know and sense when they are not liked like most animals. Cats are particularly sensitive to people they will keep on shitting in your garden if your not good with them, have you tried cat nip / treats tried to make friends with them. It's so petty you all clearly have a nice space and a love for animals just different animals why fall out with neighbours I don't understand it myself it's so petty.

That is the U.S. and states that stray and feral cats were the worst offenders, pet cats are mentioned pretty much as a secondary cause. But yeah mortality from cats pales into insignificance compared to that from humans which have destroyed huge areas of land and plunged many species into extinction, and if that wasn't enough, they are changing the climate which if the worst comes to the worst, will compromise the Earth's habitabililty for millions of people and wildlife. There is no animal on Earth more destructive than humans by a long way.

Your right of course but I can't think of an easy answer to humans..... although (hopefully) they don't usually dump in the gardens.

Sounds like you’re a responsible dog owner. I’m a cat person (had a kitten eaten by a neighbours dog and have been bitten by 2 dogs when I was little)… however… it’s not dogs I dislike … it’s the rubbish owners who don’t care for their animals or consider other people who are the problem. Cats poo in gardens … some dog owners wrap dog shit in plastic bags and then leave the bags for people to tread in… I’ve even seen dog poo in bags hung on trees like some sort of grotesque decoration ! People are the problem never the animals.

I agree!

my spaniels are trained. They do not chase cats or other animals (very occasionally squirrels get them excited but I can whistle them back to heal). We have rabbits that are in a chicken coop over night but have the run of the garden in the day. Dogs bimble about the garden with them but never chase.

i used to have cats and they used a litter tray because we all had tiny gardens and it worked for us but not all cats will use them so it’s not necessarily an option. If you live in the middle of no where with open fields there’s likely to be a bit a of poo from animals. Apparently lion manure keeps them away if you have a zoo anywhere near.

Neighbour's dogs barking is the thing that annoys me most and spoils my time at home, in my garden which I'm in an awful lot. Also when my door is open in nice weather, why do they think I want to hear their dogs? Also I work a lot of nights and at weekends the folks across the road gardening whilst their dogs run round fighting like a hunting pack for a couple of hours drives me up the wall, even earplugs don't drown it out completely. They might be playing and having fun, but it's the worst noise EVER.
Why don't people tell their dogs and train them to shut up?!
My previous neighbour had several cats and they used to sh!t in my garden, annoying, but I would rather have that back than the barking dogs.

I think you will be surprised at the sheer numbers killed world wide by cats....
Here's one example

I wouldn't be surprised. But we kill far more.

We destroy entire forests, and take others entities counties.. yes there's no comparison. Cats aren't the problem.

Definitely Team Dog.

I also have a Karen/Ken that lives next door to me. Tells me I can't feed the birds cos they shit on her car 🤣 ( all our cars get shat on, even tho i don't feed them anymore but other ppl do)
Constant cat shit in my plants, even on the grass cos it's that freakin lazy. Cats cause blindness and there's nothing worse than finding it in the garden. I'm 💯% with OP.
If my dog barks they are brought in straight away.

Cats cause blindness

Jesus chryst there is some batshit ignorance on this thread! No they do not. I'm actually embarrassed for you.

If you have kids cat shit carries toxoplasmosis which is dangerous

Dogs also carry toxoplasmosis too, and toxoplasmosis primarily affects pregnant women, so unless your kids are pregnant themselves, they're safe. It makes me wonder how all us grew up with cats in the family for generations/centuries without dropping dead from this so-called toxoplasmosis. 🙄

Not just the US:

A study published in April estimated that UK cats kill 160 to 270 million animals annually, a quarter of them birds. The real figure is likely to be even higher, as the study used the 2011 pet cat population of 9.5 million; it is now closer to 12 million, boosted by the pandemic pet craze. Seen alongside drops in bird numbers across the EU and the UK, it is “quite alarming”, says lead author and cat ecologist Tara Pirie from the University of Reading.

Far too many roaming cats killing off wildlife & cr&pping all over (usually everywhere except their own garden). Dogs perpetually barking is a problem but so are loud noise and cats. IMO Cats should be house cats only (I'm aware some breeds are better than others) they are a menace to everything when outdoors as well as themselves in towns or cities (via road accidents).
It's est over 22 million birds are killed by cats in the UK each year.
In a study of recent extinct species it was found cats were a significant cause in 40% of cases.
In America they trialled letting rescue cats that couldn't be rehomed loose in rat infested areas - they begged, killing smaller mammals and songbirds (presumably other small birds). They left the rats alone apparently too big and cunning so went for easier prey.

Guess what team I'm on!

Wildlife kills wildlife too. It's the circle, the chain of life. Humans kill and eat animals. People on here clasping their pearls at cats doing what they are meant to do - kill wildlife - are hypocrites if they are not vegan.

22 million extra birds - to spread disease and shit all over cars, buildings clothes etc, think of how much damage and disease we'd have with 22 million extra birds - I'm getting an Alfred Hitchcock movie in my mind.

Nature balances itself. Cats are part of that balance.

Wow. I adore cats but also love seeing birds in my garden. The decline in birds such as starlings, greenfinch and chaffinch is sad. What is the answer, who knows? Do cats wear bell collars anymore?

They do wear bells, but that makes no difference whatsoever. A cat can move so smoothly that the bell doesn't jingle.

DoddlesMcDoddle · 11/04/2025 07:47

Nextdoor55 · 10/04/2025 19:27

Hmm. You think that humans aren't more responsible for killing wildlife? Glass alone kills thousands of birds, then there's deliberate hunting...
We kill far more than cats every year.

Yes. Humans and human development - cars, roads, houses, loss of habitat - has the most influence. That poster said it was found cats were responsible for extinct birds in 40% of the cases. So what they didn't say, is that in 60% of the cases, cats had no involvement. That's a large majority. Humans are the biggest danger and blight on wildlife there is.

And any of these 'oh cats kill wildlife' people are full of shit and full of hypocrisy if they are not vegans themselves.

Can't understand why so many idiots on here are OK with cats shitting all over the place is OK, it's certainly not and I wouldn't have it, you'd be warned once and that would be it. The dogs on the other hand barking isn't on either to be honest. Seems some consideration from both parties are what's needed here.

Are you ok with birds shitting all over the place? Foxes? Frogs? Bats? Lizards? If so, you should be ok with cats. It's fertiliser ffs. Get over it.

Would you like to see the reports on human development has on wildlife? I can guarantee you humans do far more damage to the environment and wildlife than cats.

I also trust you're a vegan and don't eat any animal product ever, whatsoever. I mean, you wouldn't want to be a hypocrite.

lavenderdinosaur · 11/04/2025 07:55

why are you so precious about the cat poo when you have two dogs? You literally have to scoop up their poo with your hands, the thought of it makes me feel ill. In the grand scheme of things a couple of turds every now and again is fine

My God you are the cul de sac from hell. I used to think living in the country would be peaceful because there are fewer people.

Now I realise I'd be moving to misanthropy central.

Setting the dogs on her cats! 😳

Barbed wire??!!

Good grief. Where is this hellhole?

Lol reminds me of the Tom Hanks movie The 'Burbs. I picture the neighbour with the cats having good lawn and OP and the other neighbours whingeing that 'cat neighbour has best lawn on the block. And you know why' (in Bruce Dern's character Rumsfield's voice).... "because she trains her cat to crap in my yard!"

I wonder how many bugs frogs eat per year? How many worms (good for the soil and environment) do birds kill per year?

Who gives a shit. Birds are not more important than cats. I don't know why birds are put on such a pedestal as if it's a shame so many of them are killed per year. Like, who cares? Why is it more sad birds die than if cats die? Or if frogs die? I don't get it. The flying shit machines spread disease and ruin car surfaces. They are NOT more important than cats!

This.
Absolutely do not blame cats for the state of the environment or humanity. Human beings are far more destructive.

Seymourscat · 11/04/2025 08:42

The argument that you can’t be concerned about the impact in the bird population by cats, Unless you are a vegan is a stupid one. I’m thinking that non vegans are eating chicken, beef whatever. You know. Animals bred to be eaten. They aren’t eating song birds.

@DoddlesMcDoddle you must have a lot of time on your hands to reply to nearly every comment 🤭 I get I should have said their faeces can cause blindness, so shoot me 🤣
