What social hobby do you do?

I’m feeling a little lonely and I know I need to do something social. I used to live in an area I loved, now I don’t. But I can travel back to it (another London neighbourhood).

So what social hobbies do you do? I need some inspiration!

I have a preference for not late in the evening though… which does make it tricky. I work part time, so could be during the day on one of my days off. Or even Saturday morning while my children are at clubs etc.

Parkrun
A martial arts class on a Sunday afternoon
And I'm on the local parish council

GeorgeMichaelsMicStand · 08/04/2025 13:51

Outdoor exercise with a varied bunch of Middle Agers like me. I’m not looking for besties, just people to chat and have a laugh with

jjabrammms · 08/04/2025 14:09

I’m recovering from surgery - and love exercise! But can’t do high intensity for maybe another two months. Though will look up a workout with some other middle aged folk as soon as I can!!

Keen to hear lots of other examples!

I've been a member of Rock Choir for just under a year, they have groups all over the country and do daytime sessions as well as evening ones.

Seawolves · 08/04/2025 14:24

Walking groups, one is for widows and the other is just a group of people over 40.

cakeandteaandcake · 08/04/2025 14:29

I sing in a local community choir. We finish at 9pm so not late.

Divebar2021 · 08/04/2025 14:31

On the exercise front I play tennis and I find that way more social and interesting than classes or a gym session ( I play doubles and have a weekly lesson). Other than that I have a couple of pen pals that I write to and a book club I attend once a month. We also do outings to cinema / theatre periodically. I have another friend I go to “ cultural” events with - art exhibitions, ballet etc.

WrylyAmused · 08/04/2025 14:32

Dancing. There are so many different styles and types of music, bound to be something you like, and lots of socials/ weekend events once you get past absolute beginner stage

KeepSmiling89 · 08/04/2025 14:33

I'm part of a jogging group - we meet every Tuesday and Thursday night at 6.30pm, do about 3-4 miles running (sometimes longer if we're training for an event) and usually home by 7.30/8pm.

Sorry! Just read your comment that you're out of action re. exercise, but that's all I've got for now I'm afraid!

Moier · 08/04/2025 14:34

RampantIvy · 08/04/2025 14:36

Book group
A fund raising charity

Our meetings are in the evening, but neither end late.

Lu1u · 08/04/2025 14:39

Second netball! It's really fun, originally did a couch 2 court and now in a team with lots of ladies of varying ages that just want to play for a laugh/natter/ get a bit of exercise, there is a whole range of abilities but it doesn't really matter. Its the highlight of my week

When I lived aboard, there were alot of community collages that ran adult classes. Generally short term (8 weeks) for fun from languages, dance, fitness, craft etc. There might be similar in London depending on your interests. Over the years I did:
Pilates, an into to massage therapy course, Thai cooking, Mediterranean cooking, rock n roll lessons and stained glass window making.

I saw a progressive WI in North London did pole dancing classes a few years ago. There is the Waitrose cooking school- although generally they are 1 off lessons.

Yes there are lots, adult education classes organized by local councils

Tarkan · 08/04/2025 15:00

Most of mine are evenings but other areas might have daytime things.

Exercise-wise I go to physio-led Pilates (I’ve actually been off for a few months because of illness and I can feel how much I need to go back). I used to do pole fitness and really want to get back to that when I have the time and energy. Both of these I could pick for day or evening classes at least.

Non-exercise I volunteer as wardrobe mistress in our local am-dram theatre and I might also be joining a local darts team soon. All evening based there though.

Choir

Have a look at local (physical!) noticeboards - someone is always kicking off a book club or crochet group round our way!

TheNinthLock · 08/04/2025 15:15

Open water swimming (almost every Saturday morning, year round) at our local venue - a lake with firepits and coffee / cakes for after.

I used to belong to a choir but have given that up.
Am starting a weekly pottery class in September (also work part time so it’ll be on my day off)

I work for the adult learning department of our local council and the amount of courses offered is incredible. Talking to participants - many have made lifelong friends, found hobbies, and all love their weekly class(es)

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 08/04/2025 15:22

Pole dancing- practice at home is solitary but I go to a class once or twice a week with my sister.
Line dancing- once a week with a friend.
Village social committee- we organise all sorts of events and have a meeting once a month.
And as my username suggests, Paddleboarding- we’ve introduced quite a few people to it so often go with other families.

TheChosenTwo · 08/04/2025 15:22

Outdoor swimming. The lake I go to have some of the most supportive friendly inclusive bunch of people I’ve ever had the fortune to come across. I don’t really stay for the social side of it, usually too cold afterwards! But there are groups of people huddling around the fires, I’ve been offered so much homemade cake and coffees etc by people when I get out, unbelievable kindness. There’s a big community feel about it and I recommend it to anyone I know moving to the area as a good starting point to make friends if they’re interested.

This is also the same experience at the lake I swim at - the sense of community and inclusivity is amazing!

(it is not QS in M is it?)
