What social hobby do you do?

I’m feeling a little lonely and I know I need to do something social. I used to live in an area I loved, now I don’t. But I can travel back to it (another London neighbourhood).

So what social hobbies do you do? I need some inspiration!

I have a preference for not late in the evening though… which does make it tricky. I work part time, so could be during the day on one of my days off. Or even Saturday morning while my children are at clubs etc.

Parkrun - although walking it just now as I'm in recovery from injury.

Running club - but not been for a club run in months because of the injury so doing the parkrun walks keeps me in contact with my club mates.

I've been a member of Rock Choir for just under a year, they have groups all over the country and do daytime sessions as well as evening ones.

Me too. I've been going for 8 years and made loads of lovely friends.

GameOfJones · 08/04/2025 16:59

Yoga. I go to a small class at 11am on one of my days off in the week. It's such a lovely, friendly bunch of women and just nice to get out during the day and see people.

Dancing. There are so many different styles and types of music, bound to be something you like, and lots of socials/ weekend events once you get past absolute beginner stage

Agreed. Lots of classes, different styles. Coffee after

Pokémon Go. There are a lot of meet ups locally.

I hate cold water, people grimace & squawk if I try to sing, I don't like loud music or self reflective monologue (what I associate with exercise classes), I have poor sense of rhythm so dance skills are poor, the local paddleboarders won't let you join them if you don't wear a PFD. Those are reasons why some options others mentioned wouldn't work for me... I like "nature restoration" type volunteering but the sessions keep conflicting with work commitments.

I quite liked patchwork & quilting classes I did maybe 14 years ago.

Toastmasters (I went to improve my confidence with public speaking and it’s a really friendly, interesting group of people)
Book club
Swing dancing
Spanish lessons
Volunteering at a local soup kitchen

Also you can do various volunteer roles at parkrun if you’re not up to running at the moment. Always a nice group of people involved.

Shelby1981 · 08/04/2025 18:09

Women’s institute
craft club that meets in a pub or library etc
parish council/residents association
local litterpickers group

workshy46 · 08/04/2025 18:13

Tennis is unbelievably social.. almost impossible not to meet people and make friends. You also don't have to be massively athletic

Lolalady · 08/04/2025 18:14

Also for me Rock Choir. It’s a great way to meet people and get out and about performing. Off to the Edinburgh Fringe this year. You don’t have to audition or read music.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 08/04/2025 18:16

I've recently started a beginner crochet class. I started as beyond hopeless but am now surprising myself at what I've achieved in a very short period of time.

Springflowersyay · 08/04/2025 18:17

Foreign language lesson, outdoor swimming, racket sport, bookclub, yoga

jambunny · 08/04/2025 18:18

Walking - sometimes with a ramblers group and weekly with a small group of female friends.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 08/04/2025 18:33

Choir
Pottery
African Drumming
And lots of exercise based ones

TwoLeggedGrooveMachine · 08/04/2025 18:42

Another vote for choir. Seems to attract chatty outgoing people. I like the challenge of the one I go to but there are various levels of ability from community/rock choir to more semi professional competing and performing choirs. I also sea swim but it seems to be the every day swimmers who really connect with each other. I can only make it about one day a week October to March, easier in the summer with lighter evenings.

PassingStranger · 08/04/2025 20:17

I play racket sports.
In the past I did alot of voluntary work.

mathanxiety · 08/04/2025 20:42

Plein air painting group. Daytime only. We have either breakfast / brunch before or lunch afterwards.

This is also the same experience at the lake I swim at - the sense of community and inclusivity is amazing!

(it is not QS in M is it?)

It IS QS in M!!
So glad to have found a fellow swimmer from there 😂 isn’t it gorgeous?!

oobedobe · 08/04/2025 21:03

I've been playing Pickleball (indoor) for about a year (not UK), I am very slightly addicted, I do various leagues, drop-ins etc (around work). I would play everyday if I could. Now the weather is improving I am looking forward to playing outside more.

Also do a book club once a month for the past 10 years.

Running, I do this mostly on my own but meet up with friends for the odd 5K/10K event.

Winter I do snowboarding twice weekly in a soclal ladies group.

OutandAboutMum1821 · 08/04/2025 21:07

I love to swim, which isn’t a team thing, but luckily my gym is so friendly. You can literally chat to anybody there, staff and other members (men and women of all ages). I have such lovely chats with people sitting in the jacuzzi, in the changing rooms, etc. It’s the same whichever times of day I go (either first thing after the school run, early evening or at completely random times at the weekend).

OutandAboutMum1821 · 08/04/2025 21:09

Also, meant to say I’m sorry you’re feeling lonely, and I wish you luck with finding something enjoyable to do whilst hopefully making some new friends 😊

tonybennscat · 08/04/2025 21:11

Volunteer in a local gardens. It can be hard work but there are social meet-ups as well and we have coffee afterwards.

Language class - this is good because we’re paired up with different people during the class and you talk about your life in the language so you get to know everyone. It’s also very well organised so there are lots of events, coffee mornings, quizzes etc.

Painting class. Not so social as everyone gets absorbed in their work but I have met some nice people.

Darkclothes · 08/04/2025 22:17

Another idea. Most train stations have volunteers that plant flowers and maintain the gardens.

Timeforatincture · 08/04/2025 22:33

Can't believe no-one has suggested bellringing yet. Such an interesting skill to learn, and ringers are a sociable bunch.

Cinderelala · 08/04/2025 22:42

Book club, rambling, knitting/crochet, sewing, writing group.

jjabrammms · 09/04/2025 18:56

Thank you for all of these! I am researching right now!
