Smashed my teeth running

Clearinguptheclutter · 06/04/2025 22:15

Feeling very sorry for myself, tripped running and have lost significant chunks of my two upper front teeth. I’m abroad so can’t really do anything until I get back tomorrow (not in pain fortunately)

I obviously look dreadful and need this sorting, not least because they both have spikey bits currently and eating is difficult.

Can someone calmly talk me through the likely options. One of my friends thought it could be fixed with a “filling”- this seems unlikely to me. Veneers, crowns? How many thousands are we talking here to get them fixed and how permanent could they be? I really don’t have a clue.

Do you have the bits? If so they might be glued back on. My DS had this on his adult front tooth and they basically glued on a bit of plastic tooth. You can only tell if you look closely

LasVegass · 06/04/2025 22:20

I think you’re looking at 2-4K for two teeth.

Pigeonqueen · 06/04/2025 22:21

Depends on how chipped they are. If they’re not too bad you might be able to get away with having composite bonding which is about £250 per tooth.

Would travel insurance cover this as it’s an accident?

Theawfultruth · 06/04/2025 22:22

Cannot give any advice but so sorry to hear this has happened to you!! Hope it's not too expensive a fix when you get back home...

What would this be for, two new teeth?

I always knew running was bad for you, but i expected it to damage knees.

Apologies for not being any help at all @Clearinguptheclutter hope you get sorted soon.

Well I bashed my knees in the accident too

I broke the bottom off one of my front teeth when I was a child. Had a filling put on the bottom of it and then over surface of the tooth - had it redone a few times in last 40 years but last one was done 15 years ago. I think it’s known as composite bonding.
If that’s an option it’s not as expensive as a crown/veneer. It’s horrible to break your front teeth but it’s not uncommon and dentists can work magic.

Thus is the best case scenario I think but I think not permanent is that right?

I can recommend a really good dentist in Surrey, he sorted the botch job the NHS did on mine, but he doesn't do anything with knees.

Definitely time to give up running.

WearyAuldWumman · 06/04/2025 22:26

Mine were broken into a v shape in the middle when they were just coming in. When I was a teenager, they were mended with composite and looked pretty good.

When I was 20, I had crowns fitted.

At the age of 55 I needed new crowns. When they were x-rayed, the root of one was being absorbed by my jaw. Very rare, I was told and not my fault. I got a new crown on one and an implant for the other. I'll shortly be 65.

Thank you for this. Yes I am going to hope this will be possible

giving up running def not an option though I am going to reconsider my priorities and stop trying to break my own records

my knees will recover, I think

I have composite bonding, if that’s what it’s called, over a front tooth which was discoloured (unsure of reason, DD has the same). It has lasted 20 years so far. But it had my normal tooth underneath, the dentist filed away the superficial layer and put this kind of Tippex on top. It might depend on how much of your tooth is still there. The main thing is that it’s fixable, though it’s a hassle 🥲

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/04/2025 22:34

DBro smashed several teeth in a mountain bike accident and had them replaced with implants. He was living abroad at the time and his health insurance paid.

I was 13 when I first got mine done. Unfortunately for me, one dropped off whilst I was applying my make-up for the senior school dance when I was 17. My dentist renewed that for me.

Possibly because of the way they were broken, I was subsequently advised that crowns would be better and got those when I was 20, as I mentioned above.

Mykittensmittens · 06/04/2025 22:40

DD lost a decent chunk of her adult front tooth.

the dentist did something which took about 15 minutes - injected some (I assume compostite material) and gently formed to shape, UV light and job done. It’s been in place for 5 years now.

had it done privately. Cost me £30.

a bit aghast at some of the prices being discussed here!

wishiwasupahill · 06/04/2025 22:45

claim on travel insurance, surely?

CB2611 · 06/04/2025 22:50

I broke half of my front tooth off years ago and it was fixed with a composite bond on NHS band 2 charge. NHS bands - you pay the one cost regardless of how many teeth as long as they're all part of the same treatment.
If you are not an NHS dental patient and need the work done privately, speak to your dental practice about setting up a payment plan for the work done.
I hope you are OK xx

Licky · 06/04/2025 22:54

One of these is a half tooth half whatever the NHS dentist added on, over 25 years ago (probably composite bonding). I think at the time it was free as I was a minor.

I have composite bond on my 2 top middle teeth. No one can tell and they've lasted over 30 years so far.

MerlinsBeardIcicle · 06/04/2025 23:04

They will likely put a temporary filling in to ensure your teeth are structurally sound if they have jagged pieces on, and they will xray to see what the damage is to the root etc. What you have done will depend upon how much damage you have done to them.

they have a lot of very good solutions for chipped teeth as others have referenced so I can’t think you would be facing anything too extreme- costs wise I have two implants done privately in last few years (as I damaged my top teeth as a child very common) and they were £3k a piece. Your costs for simpler work should be much less especially if covered by NHS.

good luck with it it’s never pleasant inuring your teeth

EasternStandard · 06/04/2025 23:06

You poor thing. I tripped and it’s mad how much damage you can do when running.

I didn’t give up either but mostly shoulder, knee and under eye. Hope you can get it fixed soon.

seanconneryseyebrow · 06/04/2025 23:06

I had two bottom teeth out recently and it cost 5k for two dental implants. It was a ballache and took months but now they look banging. You’d never know
