thinking of starting a mum and daughter clothing shop with your mum classics eg midi dresses, animal print and denim jackets with a teenage/student clothing section chosen by my 18 year old daughter. Girly environment: pink, flowery, cupcakes on sale to provide a shopping date venue for Mum’s with older teenagers.
Would it be popular? What would you want to see in the boutique? TIA

Do you mean matching clothes for mum and 18 year old?

IceCreamWoes · 06/04/2025 07:32

When I was 18 I didn't want to go shopping with my mum and eat cupcakes in a pink/flowery shop. It's not my thing at all, but I'm sure there's people out there. What's your market research to date consisted of, or are you just thinking it's just something you'd have like at that age?

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 06/04/2025 07:32

People will get cake all over your clothes. There’s a reason the clothes shop / cafe combo doesn’t exist.

TeenToTwenties · 06/04/2025 07:34

The 'girly environment 'sounds more suitable for 7-12 year old to me, but I'm not much into pink stereotypes.

OptareSolo · 06/04/2025 07:36

My teen would rather nail herself to a tree than go clothes shopping with me. Her tastes in clothing are completely different to mine.

By all means open the shop you want, OP but I can't see it being half as successful as you think it might be.

BurntOrangeAutumn · 06/04/2025 07:37

Actually I think its a nice idea, very Boutique style? Some teen girls still enjoy shopping with their mums, although some still want to the wear the teen uniform of jd sports.

faerietales · 06/04/2025 07:38

I think you’d be wasting your time.

TheSassyAmberNewt · 06/04/2025 07:38

Have you researched your target market? How many mum and teenage daughter duos are there in your area, let alone those who want to shop together?

Do teens/young adults really want to shop with their mums? Doubt it. I reckon they come back to each other around the time of weddings, so you’d be competing with wedding dress shopping environments.

Cabbagefamily · 06/04/2025 07:39

No, it won’t work. They’ll want completely different styles and prices. Surely, many older teenagers are away at university, so the chances of mum and daughter being around together are limited.

No. I think she means you go to her café and each of you get styled. Adult by adult, daughter by 18 yo.

anon2022anon · 06/04/2025 07:40

My 21 year old might come shopping with me, but there's very little she would buy from the same shop as me- completely different vibes.
Also, the price point would be completely off- what I might pay for a t-shirt that's of a certain quality, there's no way she would pay as it's not a key item in her wardrobe. What she would pay for a t-shirt, I probably wouldn't consider because the quality wouldn't be there.

Hotmess101 · 06/04/2025 07:41

It’s a sweet idea but I think the expected daughter age is too old - maybe the younger end could be aimed at 12-15yr olds?

Hotmess101 · 06/04/2025 07:42

Mind you in my youth that used to be Etam and Tammy girl but just minus the cupcakes!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 06/04/2025 07:42

I switched off at animal print < shudder>

MinnieCoops · 06/04/2025 07:43

I would aim for a much younger crowd. Not many 18yos want their mum’s help with what to wear.

OudAndRose · 06/04/2025 07:44

No, I don't think it would be popular because no older teen wants to go clothes shopping with her mum. I would target the tween age group of around 10-13 instead. You need the girls to be too young to pay for their own stuff in order to be willing to go with their mums!

Gettingupearlytomorrow · 06/04/2025 07:45

Sounds very much like Plouise but with clothing instead. More likely to be successful with the tween market instead of teens. Good luck 🧁 🌸

CornishTeaTime · 06/04/2025 07:47

Nope, do one or the other. Most 18 year olds want vintage, urban outfitters style. Pink and cupcakes is for 7 year olds

God I loved Tammy Girl. Those were the days!

pearbottomjeans · 06/04/2025 07:48

Agree, much younger would be better. Or what would sell even better would be mum and under-10s matching clothes. Very different to what you’re wanting to do though so maybe not.

I come across a fair few teens and can’t think of a single one that wears colour - it’s all black sportswear. Any colour is in actual running leggings. Other than that, black grey white and navy.

Lovegame · 06/04/2025 07:50

My 9 year old would probably think pink and cupcakes was a but young. My 5 year old would love it but other than the odd party dress I mostly pay supermarket prices for clothes. Neither would want to hang around and try the clothes on or wait around while I looked at clothes.

weshallovercomeaswevedonebefore · 06/04/2025 07:51

i have older teen girls - the only reason they might shop with me is in the hope I might pay! But they wouldn’t go anywhere that sold animal print as that’s the ugliest thing in the world according to them (& me, but I know a lot of people my age like it - not so an 18 year old!)

younger kids though, definitely

4pmwinetimebebeh · 06/04/2025 07:52

I would go for a more modern and cooler vibe than pink and flowery. I can see the appeal if you had the right clothes obviously they won’t suit everyone but it’s a nice idea!

Zeitumschaltung · 06/04/2025 07:54

I would think it’s a non-starter for all the reasons mentioned above. If people do go shopping together, they just alternate the shops they go in so there’s something for everyone. And then go for a cake with a coffee somewhere.

Coali · 06/04/2025 07:54

That’s a very specific combination!! A woman who likes midi dresses and animal print. But also happens to have a daughter who at 18 likes clothing more popular with young teens. Who also like to eat cake whilst shopping. Better make sure you have some extreme vanity sizing or people won’t want the cake after trying on clothes!!

Are there enough people who live in your town to fit this exact combo? I’m a mother, but have never worn a midi dress, animal print, or a denim jacket!!
