If a parent doesn’t consent for teenage vaccinations when the team go to a school to vaccinate do they speak to the children who are opted out to offer them the chance to consent for themselves or are they just not called for the vaccine ?

What do you expect, them to hold a child down just because their parent consented?

Not at all. I think they were correct in what they did. I was just meaning that yes the children do have a say.

At our place they are called out to the hall class by class, work through the list, but any one without consent they do not go ahead with the vaccination. I had one kid last year who was so anxious she got very tearful. (Mum had not given consent.) The nurse team saw her first and reassured her they wouldn’t give it without parental consent and I took her back to class with me early.

in a large school it is a bit of a production line but it gets an important job done efficiently. Less that 20% of families decline and many of them will have made alternative arrangements. (E.g. my son has injectable flu rather than nasal spray because we have an immunosuppressed family member.)

I was opted out for HPV 🙄. Parents were phoned a couple of times and made a big song and dance about it all being so intrusive but nothing transpired. As an adult I spent some time being tested and vaccinated for what I had been opted out of as a child but sadly the HPV one was missed- I believe they do it for older age groups now but I think I’m still too old for it. Would be ecstatic to be corrected and be able to get it now!

Eligible up to the age of 25 if never had.

That boat has definitely sailed but thanks 😅

I’m not sure how they do it in schools but the teens can consent or non consent at school like my son did in s1 (@ 13) for his HPV I think he had a bit of a wobbler on the day (to himself) and declined - I had consented and discussed it with him but he chose not to.

So we discussed why, then more about what the vaccine is to protect against and he asked some more questions and decided he would get it in the catch up. So more of an informed consent I guess, he’s had the men acwy and dtap now too. (Older 2 got all theirs no problem) youngest however is autistic and got his up until flu at age 10 and has since declined anything else and there’s no way they’ll get near him at school so I’ve not consented and asked them not to send him. I think if the kids are able they should be able to decide if they have the vaccines(or not) I’d rather my youngest got his but I can’t force him or hold him down for them, he doesn’t understand what they are for etc I can’t reason with him like my older boys. I am a vaccinator so pro vaccine - I do pre school though so no experience with schools (hats of to them as it’s not a job I would sign up for) can imagine it’s quite full on.

My son missed the HPV twice because I forgot to fill the form on both opportunities so he wasn't called for it. He wasn't asked if he wanted it on the day.
We did get the vaccine in the end but we had to go to a vaccination clinic on one of their catch up dates.
When he was 15 though he did come home from school saying he'd had a flu vaccine that I didn't consent for. I don't ever get the flu vaccine for myself or my children and even my mum doesn't get it, so I was irritated about that. It was his choice though. He made his choice based on the fact that some of his friends were getting it so he just went with them!

They didn’t speak to my DD when I opted her out of the HPV one. It sounds like it might be school or area dependent.

I read an interesting article today about head and neck cancers, particularly in men, being caused by the HPV virus (via oral sex), stating that the majority of head and neck cancers in men will be due to this. I was astounded - but hopeful that the vaccine will bring these numbers down in time. I have googled and can't find the specific article though there are lots of studies and articles back ing this up.
Also a really positive study from Scotland which found zero cases of cervical cancer in HPV vaccinated females who got their first dose age 12-13.
