Trying to not buy anything American!

PinaColada24 · 05/04/2025 15:36

This is a personal choice. I’m trying to not buy anything imported from American. Is anyone else doing the same? Any ideas?

I am! If we stop buying 10% of their goods I feel like the tariff wont impact so hard. I know the maths doesn't work but makes me feel better.
Quite hard though as main things are machinery which I don't tend to buy so much of at Aldi!
Will cut wine and bourbon (that DH loves) and avoid Amazon.

ZigZagJigsaw · 05/04/2025 15:54

There was a good thread on Reddit about this the other day. The main thing seemed to be tech products are their biggest export - social media, Amazon etc. I’ll see if I can find the thread.

CaptainMyCaptain · 05/04/2025 15:55

I realise there's not much I can do, it's a token effort but makes me feel.better.

PinaColada24 · 05/04/2025 16:10

I know anything I do is a token effort but in my head if I don’t buy anything American then I’m not supporting T or his tariffs.

What will your husband drink instead of Jack Daniels? I can buy wine from other countries so I know I’ll be fine in that regard.

We’re trying too. It’s difficult with some things (especially tech!) but also awareness is key.
What brands are people boycotting?

unsync · 05/04/2025 16:33

No more Mondelez (tbf I've boycotted since the Cadbury's debacle), Kraft Heinz, P&G, J&J, Mars or Boots. It's quite easy to swap out the US food and cosmetic giants. There are lots of UK / European alternatives.

Tech is more difficult, although I've never owned anything Apple and I don't like Amazon, so have never used them either. Google is the biggie, although Android is open source and there are viable search engine alternatives. Is MS mitigated by Bill Gates' philanthropy? I guess it depends on how far you want to take it.

PinaColada24 · 05/04/2025 16:36

I think if everyone makes even a small effort to boycott American products it’s a good thing.

OP posts:
ZigZagJigsaw · 05/04/2025 16:37

I use DuckDuckGo as a search engine. It’s still American but it doesn’t store my search history and sell it on. Slight tangent.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 05/04/2025 16:37

I want to, but it's actually very difficult with tech. I can't think what I actually buy from the US other than the stuff that I can't easily manage without, like Microsoft etc. I suppose I can boycott Amazon, but that's about it...

As in Boots the chemist? Had no idea they are US owned.

JasmineTea11 · 05/04/2025 16:38

Boots is a US owned company, so there's that too!

Kendodd · 05/04/2025 16:43

I said this on another thread.
What really wish would happen is some sort of global, coordinated 'cancel Amazon' day. If enough people supported it, that would send a really strong message to Trump and his tech bro cronies.
Plus we would have the huge entertainment value of watching Bezos and Trump and the White House lawn trying to flog shite from Amazon while Trump rants about it being illegal to not shop on Amazon.
They'd be like Del Boy and Rodney 😆

Not who you asked, but Whistle Pig and Lot 40 are both excellent Canadian whiskies. They are ryes, so a different profile from a bourbon but in the same ballpark. It also might be a good time to appreciate Cognac. Producers of that will be hit hard since the US is a huge importer of it.

unsync · 05/04/2025 17:03

@Planesmistakenforstars How great would that be if everyone swapped Bourbon for Canadian Whisky?

Of course, Scottish would be good too, but wouldn't have the added 🖕.

IsItOnlyWednesday · 05/04/2025 17:09

I’m following this because I want to boycott American as much as possible.

I have Apple phone etc which is disappointing, next time it needs renewing I’ll go with something else. DS will have some suggestions.
So need to avoid Boots, Mars and Cadbury? Those are the ones from the list above we tend to use.

Inextremis · 05/04/2025 17:12

Jameson (Irish) whiskey is supposed to have a flavour profile similar to that of Jack Daniels. I recommend the Stout casked version :)

Goldenbear · 05/04/2025 17:16

DH and I were discussing the services like Amazon and Netflix in all honesty most of what we want to watch you have to rent on Amazon now and Netflix is full of repeats that were on the BBC 6 years ago! Or lots of conspiracy stuff or stuff we aren't interested in like Temptation Island kind of programmes.

@howchildrenreallylearn
Burger King is owned by an American-Canadian parent company (the same one as Tim Hortons.) It moved headquarters to Canada to reduce its tax bill. Ultimately though both are majority controlled by a Brazilian shareholding company. As with a lot of these conglomerate businesses it's murky and not clear cut.

marsaline · 05/04/2025 18:15

We are trying. I’ve not ordered anything from Amazon in weeks which is a big change for us. We’ve stopped buying Diet Coke and other US food/drink brands. We are avoiding the American chain food outlets. Won’t renew Netflix. I’m sitting here drinking a margarita rather than my usual Californian wine.

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 05/04/2025 18:21

I’m doing this too. Even if I can’t avoid absolutely everything I will do my very best. I feel like I just don’t want US stuff in my life anymore.
It’s more than enough seeing all the shit from the Shite House on the news everyday.

Semiramide · 05/04/2025 19:46

Is Costa Coffee US or British? (Conflicting informationon on this thread...)
