Trying to not buy anything American!

This is a personal choice. I’m trying to not buy anything imported from American. Is anyone else doing the same? Any ideas?

I agree that it would be hard to boycott tech, but would prefer to avoid US companies where I can. I mostly try to avoid UPF as much as possible, so food wise it’s not too bad and I’ve just checked Unilever and it looks like they are Dutch/UK owned so I’m good with Helmans Mayo & Ben & Jerry’s as exceptions, along with most cleaning products.

Where I’m struggling is toothpaste. Does anyone know a good total toothpaste alternative to Colgate? As in one that’s effective.

B&J recently fired the CEO who was anti-Trump, didn't they?

Blinkyy · 06/04/2025 20:56

If people really tried to keep this up -and I’m sure they are doing this in other countries like France,Canada it would provide openings for other manufacturers to step up.

I stopped using amazon but there are lots of English companies selling on there so it makes no sense.

What’s stopping you buying directly from those companies? Amazon has been convenient but honestly it’s not unique what they offer. Whatever you are after is very likely available elsewhere. And no, they’re not that cheap either.

@ZigZagJigsaw re GPs, more than half of England's GP surgeries use software from EMIS which was bought by Optum (an American healthcare company) in 2023 who themselves are owned by UnitedHealthcare the one whose CEO was shot dead last year. So that might be a bit bigger than asking for non-US pharmaceuticals. Not trying to be arsey just showing how deep we are in a global market.

This is part of the reason I’m boycotting. Honestly we have inadvertently or blindly allowed a few extremely wealthy people gain too much power. Musk being an excellent case in point of just the sort you don’t want to give a great deal of power too and yet now he has it. So for me it is about readdressing the power imbalance a little. Only way we can do that is to support tech made in Europe, Australia, New Zeland or Canada. Basically our allies. Hopefully that will help extract us out of the us tentacles over time.

What about bookstores? I buy lots of books on amazon. Waterstones is American owned I think.

financialcareerstuff · 07/04/2025 09:42

I do think we should give a pass or even support MSN / Microsoft. Bill Gates gave $550 million to Kamala Harris’s campaign. He also continues to give billions through the Gates Foundation to women’s causes and global health. His and his wife’s foundation is one of the few actors powerful enough to step in and plug some of the gaps in global health Trump has created by pulling out of vital international humanitarian funding.

I think a general shift away from buying American is good, to support the global economy and make sure the pain of Trump’s tariffs are felt in America. But I do think we should also be targeting to try to make sure Trump enablers are hit worst…. Tesla, Google, Amazon on an individual level, (I’m sure there are many more and would love to see a list of companies owned by Trump enablers) and perhaps products produced specifically in heavy Trump -voting states. I’d actually love to see a three-tier list “actively punish and boycott ” “swap to non-American if you can” and “actively support”. I want people to think “if I speak out in support of Trump or help him, I will pay a price” not “those bastards are punishing America- I must be right about my isolationism”.

The lists we already have are super useful. Thank you.

GameOfJones · 07/04/2025 09:48

@CarefulN0w for toothpaste, Haleon is the company behind Aquafresh and Sensodyne and is based in the UK. So you could swap Colgate or Oral B toothpaste for one of those brands.

financialcareerstuff · 07/04/2025 09:58

MSNBC is also leading the way on resistance journalism….. home to most of the liberal American broadcasters who everyday are highlighting and railing against Trump’s human rights abuses and the lunacy of the tariffs. I think we need to be actively supporting the Americans who are fighting this fight.

financialcareerstuff · 07/04/2025 10:33

And Netflix owner, Reed Hastings, is an established democratic, who donated to Harris (and has been boycotted by Trump supporters)…. So I would cancel Amazon Prime (Jeff Bezos, active Trump supporter), and let Netflix pass. It will upset Bezos to see his competitor not hit as hard as him.

Whether your primary objective is bringing down the tariffs or bringing down Trump, I think these will both be achieved best and quickest by targeting Trump supporters over a blanket boycott?

JennyChawleigh · 07/04/2025 12:01

Smol Products do toothpaste (SLS free as well). You can buy books and e books online from Hive "a per cent of the profits go back into your nearest independent bookshop every time you make a purchase, or you can select your “favourite” bookshop to benefit instead."

He is still however its largest shareholder

I can almost guarantee that some of the money you have in your pension will be invested in Amazon

There is a facebook group called Boycott USA for inspiration and tips!

It will most likely be the same for Tesla too. Elon only has a 12.8% stake. The majority of the rest of the shareholders are investment companies. The two biggest after Elon are Vanguard and Black Rock.

It's sort of ironic that you boycott the globalist corporations so you can punish Trump's anti- globalist policies.....Buying British when Trump wants Americans to buy American. I don't really understand the global economy to be honest, but I do see a lot of drawbacks to globalisation. I don't think it's always good for either people or the environment. In my youth being anti- globalist was looked on as the more liberal- lefty option. Now it's framed as being right- wing.

And do you think that is Trump's motivations, anti-globalist?

Not taken as being arsey 🙂. It is interesting how enmeshed we really are. I said in one of my other posts that I thought American tech companies would be hard to avoid but I was thinking more along the lines of Meta, Microsoft, I didn’t know this about GPs.

DoubleDoubleDown · 07/04/2025 15:16

FYI- while Timmy's is a Canadian brand it's owned by RBI. A multinational company. They also own Burger King & Popeyes.

ZigZagJigsaw · 07/04/2025 15:22

From the Guardian comments:

Canadian shoppers are starting a new habit.
After checking an item to see if it is an American product, they return it to the shelf upside down and turn several more of the same item upside down so the next shopper knows to skip that product.

Goldenbear · 07/04/2025 13:32

Well to be fair no. I think he is using tariffs as a bargaining chip to get a better deal for the US, maybe to try to circumvent some of the health and safety standards that other countries have in place ( in automotive and food, for examp). But maybe to boost some industries in the US.

sodabreadjam · 07/04/2025 16:41

Here is a website created by a Scottish man which helps you to source alternatives to USA and Russian goods, materials and services. It is called Bankrupt Trump.

World of Books is British-owned, although they also operate in the US. They sell both used and new books.

Edited

Oral B is always recommended by our dentist, very good for enamel unlike most others apparently.

I cancelled my Amazon Prime today. Feels weirdly refreshing.

Sadly oral B is US owned. I’m happy to try sensodyne though.
