Mens swimwear in France

Changeeman · 05/04/2025 08:28

What can men actually wear to swim in France? I know traditionally it was mandatory to wear speedo trunks, is this still the case?

My DH has his knickers in a right old twist so trying trying work out what will be acceptable.

We'll be staying at a Yelloh! campsite.

They have to be swimming clothes not shorts that could be worn elsewhere. Mr Monkey has some "French" swim shorts he takes on holiday which are basically a fitted pair of short boxers made of swim suit material - they are by Speedo.

On modesty, due to the rules men of all shapes and sizes in France happily wear little trunks and briefs, no one bats an eye lid.

The rules are more rigorously enforced in leisure centres and municpal pools than holiday places. Years ago Mr Monkey was ordered out of an open air pool in Lyon for wearing baggy surfer style swim shorts similar to the ones you posted earlier - we were mainly planning to swim in the lake in Annecy so he had neglected to bring his French swimwear 😄.

Although it's only an issue I think for the French , most other countries manage in pools without them.

No, same in Belgium. What OP posted above would not be OK. The reason giving here is hygiene rather than H&S i.e. they don't want people swimming in their underwear - silly because you could wear your trunks as underwear.
Big problem for muslim men here.

It's not just France that has rules - In Italy you have to wear a swim cap in many public pools.

Women's swim wear is skin tight and barely covers our arses - so much so that we have to wax our pubes.

Forgive me if I don't have much sympathy for men with their knickers in a twist.

I dont wear swimwear like that and wouldnt visit somewhere where I was forced to. Like OPs husband I wouldnt like being forced into something where I felt uncomfortable.

Sorry replied to wrong poster.

Yeah in Portugal swimming hats were mandated.

Ginmonkeyagain · 05/04/2025 09:47

Women have to wear swim clothes too but they don't have to be the arse flossing versions - modestly cut one pieces are fine. What you can't wear are t shirts or baggy shorts.

I had heard some places have issues with rash vests but I think that varies.

The main rule of thumb is it has to be fitted and something that is just designed for swimming.

What an absolute shame for them.

Jijithecat · 05/04/2025 09:53

Go to Decathlon and buy some jammers. All the men from Continental Europe will be wearing Decathlon ones too, so DH won't stand out.

All of it as far as I know, but I haven't been to a public pool in Flanders.
And yes, swimming caps are compulsory as well.

Changeeman · 05/04/2025 08:44

Do we think something like this may be okay?

No. They need to be skin tight and the same kind of fabric used in women’s one piece swimming costumes. The length is fine though. Budgie smugglers not necessary.

Immavet · 05/04/2025 09:54

We've been lucky then, we've never had this role enforced anywhere that we stayed in France (including a Yelloh! campsite last year).

Similarly, we've never been made to wear swim caps in Italy or Portugal (I didn't even know that was a thing).

It looks like enforcement of the rules vary though, so we've been lucky!

CarlaH · 05/04/2025 09:56

My best friend has a stoma bag. He couldn’t possibly wear budgie smugglers. It this not a bit discriminating against people like him.

Ginmonkeyagain · 05/04/2025 09:56

I have mixed feelings tbh. I think it is better for people to only swim in clothes designed for swimming and we sbould have more rules like that here in the UK - there are hygiene and H&S issues with just using normal clothes or baggy swim suits.

However whilst I have zero modesty issues (I change on the beach without the British towel dance) I know it is a real issue for some, so I would relax rules to allow slightty baggier and longer line swimwear - like burkinis.

This kind of style is what you will see most of.

Ginmonkeyagain · 05/04/2025 09:59

@CarlaH wkuldn't high waisted swim shorts be ok? My friend has a stoma and she gets special high waisted shorts for running so she feels more secure.

MarioLink · 05/04/2025 12:26

My DH wore "jammers" which basically look like cycle shorts. There was a mix of them the Daniel Craig style ones and speedo styles. No board shorts or other baggy shorts was enforced. This was northern France on a campsite with not many Brits.

ExpressCheckout · 05/04/2025 12:42

Sorry if this is a silly question, but does he have to use the on site pool?

Completely understandable he might be uncomfortable with this and I don't think he should be pressured to conform (not suggesting you are btw, more of a social pressure if you see what I mean).

Heaven knows how the typical UK teen lad would cope 😂but I guess French men/boys just get on with it because they are used to it, or just choose not to do it.

Are there beaches nearby, which won't have the same rules?

Normandy144 · 05/04/2025 13:01

The rule does get enforced but some places are stricter than others. I've stayed at sites where it is strictly enforced. Best advice is that he should buy a pair of jammers from Decathlon. He can then wear his regular swim shorts over the top. When he's about to go in the pool he can remove the baggy shorts and just wear jammers. Honestly though most men and boys were wearing them and it's just normal. Funnily enough the people who did stand out were the men who wouldn't get in the pool because they couldn't face wearing a pair of jammers.

rickyrickygrimes · 05/04/2025 13:02

So for many things like this in France, it depends.

There's 'the rule' and then there's what we actually do. If there is a rule (a particular piece of paper is needed, a certain item of clothing is to be worn, a specific rdv is needed for a meeting) then you need to ensure that you can obey that rule. However, in practice, you may never actually be asked to actually follow the rule. You just need to be prepared to do so.

So the rule might be that you need a certain attestation / paperwork to pass through passport control at an airport. But you are never asked to actually produce that attestation, and you pass through countless times without being asked to produce that piece of paper. Unless, of course, one day you go without it (not a big deal, you think - you've never been asked all the other times). On that occasion you will be asked to produce it, and the passport control guys will refuse you entry because you don't have the correct attestation because, clearly, that's the rule and you should have been ready to follow the rule.

The other thing is that there is a high degree of individual liberty on the part of the rule-enforcers. They may insist all the time, some of the time or never. And it can change from day to day, person to person, campsite to campsite.

So long story short, take at least one of each style, start with the ones he prefers to wear and keep the others as back up.

BTW we've lived in France for 20 years, and DH much prefers the tighter swimming trunks, they are much comfier.

I thought that nothing other than budgie smugglers were allowed, not shorts.

WinterNightStars · 05/04/2025 13:09

We’ve been to France quite a bit & found as long as they’re fitted they’re ok - DH never wears budgie smugglers 😳 but wears the fitted speedo swim shorts or jammers. Pools often require swim hats too. Everyone’s in the same boat tho so no one bats an eyelid.

caringcarer · 05/04/2025 13:09

If you go to a foreign country you should stick to their rules. Buy some jammers. I really don't see why this is such an issue for your DH. He'll stand out more if he doesn't follow the rules and he may not be allowed in the pool.

The only people you will see wearing proper budgie smugglers on most French holidays are 70+ with a mahogany tan.

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 05/04/2025 13:25

Men of a 'generous carriage' wearing budgie smugglers may, to the casual observer, look like they're not wearing anything at all.

That Japanese guy on Britain's Got Talent the other year made a whole act out of it!
