100ml liquid on aeroplane?

Youagain2025 · 03/04/2025 17:15

Can anyone explain to me how the liquid rule works for going on an plane ?

Am I right in thinking underseat /hand luggage only allows 100ml

But I also keep seeing see through bags with 4 or 5 separate 100ml bottles.

Why would you struggle? Shampoo and conditioner only make up two containers.

I travel regularly and take cleanser, toner, toothpaste, deodorant, face cream, hand cream, perfume and a magnesium spray and I can't fit shampoo and conditioner in too.

If you’re literally only taking sun cream then fill multiple 100ml bottles per bag. 100ml is no way enough!

But you can order and buy it at the airport if there’s a boots but what SPF do you need because as someone who burns like a fucker so uses as high as possible, I’ve never had a problem finding it and it’s really not much different in price

HotCrossBunplease · 03/04/2025 18:29

They have Boots in most UK airports, prices are more or less the same and those branches have more sun cream than many high street ones precisely because they are in the airport! I’d be astonished if they did not have the factor you need.

Bottles do not have to be clear. It’s just bags that have to be clear, if needed.

IIRC, OP is going to Spain. You can buy high SPF cream in any supermarket.

dementedpixie · 03/04/2025 18:34

@Youagain2025 are you only taking hand luggage? You can put larger size containers in hold luggage. For hand luggage the containers must be 100mls or less and they don't need to be in clear containers but would need to be in a clear bag (depending on the airport you're flying from).

1apenny2apenny · 03/04/2025 19:07

You can do click and collect at Boots rather then taking it thorough. Or as pp just buy it when you get there.

Arran2024 · 03/04/2025 19:12

You can just buy it at Boots at the airport tbh. The restrictions are on what you take through security. Once you are through, you can buy what you like. Trouble is if you want to bring it back.

Toothpaste?

You'll need a tad more than 100ml for 5 people for a week in Spain in summer!!!

They sell it in Spain

Moisturiser, deodorant, toothpaste, foundation, etc, etc

OP your hand luggage allowance will depend on your airline and ticket - you will need to check exactly what size bag(s) you can take.

The small bag with your liquids in will need to fit within whatever your allowance is.

Sometimes you can take an extra ‚airport shopping‘ bag with you on your flight but sometimes it has to fit within your luggage allowance. You need to check.
( I usually bring snacks with me rather than buy them at the airport.)

Probably expensive? And may not have the factor we need

Edited

You can pre -order the right factor from boots in the airport and then pick it up past security meaning you have have as much sun cream and toothpaste as you want

Youagain2025 · 03/04/2025 18:04

Thank you. I'm only taking sun cream so should be fine.

So if i get sun cream do i have to put that in a see through bottle ?

Edited

No the normal packaging is fine but only in a small travel size bottle, usually 50/75ml. Likewise any makeup like foundation, mascara, lip balm, hair gel etc which are liquid , gel or paste. Each is placed together in a clear plastic bag (which are available before security) up to a max of 1000ml. Some airports you still have to remove from your bag at the scanner, others not. Electronics are also taken out of bag and you may have to remove belt, shoes, caps and jacket to pass through the body scanner. Assume anything you buy at the airport lounge after security has to fit in your bag, some airlines will allow it separately but not RA.

LIZS · 03/04/2025 19:52

Also water bottles have to be empty to pass through security. Don’t forget that if you buy normal size products in Boots or over there you cannot bring it back either.

There are loads of shops airside - all the airport duty free, WH Smiths, Bodyshop, Pret, plus the likes of Accessorize. I usually fly from Heathrow terminal 5vto Glasgow and honestly there are so many shops. The big issue depends on who you are flying with and their rules on cabin luggage. BA let you take a hefty case, a handbag and a bag from the shops on no problem but the budget airlines wouldn't- they would have you put it all in your tiny single carry on bag. But you can eg buy sandwiches and eat them before you board.

Ah I was going to ask about tablets/phones/charges. Do I take them out and put the through the scanner thing ? Then add them back to case after.

Ok so if we have a drink we should bin/,drink it before we go through? Then we can buy a drink from boots after and it will be fine 🤔

If

springbringshope · 03/04/2025 20:30

The rule has always confused me. I could take 10x100ml bottles as long as they fit into a single bag. And I could take an empty water bottle. If I was carrying something dangerous I could just put it all into the bottle on the plane. I don’t understand what they are protecting against and how insisting on small bottles helps.

Why is 6x100ml bottles ok but 1x 250ml bottle a risk?

There is normally somewhere to empty the liquid out of a drinks bottle before you enter security (near the plastic bags) and a water fountain to refill the other side. All phones, chargers , tablets etc are removed from your bag by you and placed in a tray to go through the scanner then you reclaim and repack in the bag after you have passed through the body scanner.

BashfulClam · 03/04/2025 21:28

I take a bar of soap and solid shampoo as they take up very little space and don’t need to go into the bag. I had the Mitchum solid stock deodorant last three times and didn’t get my bag pulled. Must be the roll on liquid one only.
