100ml liquid on aeroplane?

Youagain2025 · 03/04/2025 17:15

Can anyone explain to me how the liquid rule works for going on an plane ?

Am I right in thinking underseat /hand luggage only allows 100ml

But I also keep seeing see through bags with 4 or 5 separate 100ml bottles.

You can take numerous 100ml containers, some airports you still need to take them out through security. My friend took 3 clear toilet bags with about 10 100ml bottles once 😂

Mrsjohnsmith · 03/04/2025 17:20

As above, you can take up to 100ml in a single container, but you can have multiple containers that total no more than 1litre (so 10 x 100ml containers). This is in hand luggage, anything is fine in hold bags - I’d check with your specific airline on their website, but I flew two days ago with just hand luggage and these were the rules.

It's a 20x20cm clear resealable bag that's usually allowed. You can fit multiple items of 100mls and under as long as you can still shut the bag

Each item can't be more than 100ml and you have to fit them into a tiny plastic bag. You are only allowed one little bag each. You would for example really struggle to get shampoo and conditioner into the bag along with a load of make up.

But it's only fluid make up that has to go in the bag, so if you take pencil lip liner, solid blusher etc it doesn't have to go in the bag.

Why would you struggle? Shampoo and conditioner only make up two containers.

Iknowaboutpopular · 03/04/2025 17:25

Yep as above, multiple fluid items, each 100ml in a clear plastic bag. Solid makeup compact items don't count as liquid.

McQueensMuse · 03/04/2025 17:26

I bloody hate this rule, but yes a maximum of 10 100ml bottles.

I suppose you could have 20 x 50ml bottles if you could fit them in that teeny bag as the rule is bottles to be a maximum of 100ml and no more than 1000ml in total.

I manage fine when travelling with DH and DC as they don’t need much but really struggle when travelling alone.

Interesting fact from travelling at the weekend. The new scanners that don’t require you to remove your things from your bag include technology that scans for certain chemicals.

Mitchum roll on deodorant contains a chemical that will always get you stopped for a secondary check. It’s fine to take through but only after they have pulled you aside to double check it’s just Mitchum.

The security checking guy told me this, so straight from horse’s mouth. I think he was telling everyone because he was so bored of having to check so many bags of fragrant ladies!

I had this when I last flew, had a L'Oréal roll on that got pulled out at Stanstead, and also on the return from Edinburgh they did the same.

Also my partner got pulled at the xray scanner as she was wearing a shiny top and the machines don't like it, so bear that in mind as well when going through security.

Ilovelowry · 03/04/2025 17:49

I never put lip salve in. So tiny tubes of blistex never get pulled up

I also have a zipped plastic clear toiletries bag from amazon. Been using for years. It's def more than a plastic bags worth and it has never even been a problem, in London, EU or US.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 03/04/2025 17:53

I think most UK airports no longer require you to take liquid bottles out of your luggage, as long as they are all under 100 ml. However, it depends very much on where you’ll be flying to/from so I would recommend having them ready packed in the plastic bag so you can take them out if requested. It’s always possible to buy additional supplies within the airport following security, but bear in mind that you will still have the same rules on returning so depends how much you will use while away. If you are going to a hotel they will normally supply shampoo and soap. In fact, most self catering rentals will too.

Lovelynames123 · 03/04/2025 17:55

FWIW I haven't put my liquids in a clear bag on my last few trips, as they're not needed to be removed from the luggage. Check the airport you're travelling from to confirm. Also no need to take electronics out anymore at my local airport, it's makes security so much easier!

Op it's simpler to just Google, some of the above posts aren't completely clear. Here:

No. But it can be max 100ml.

Batbatbatty · 03/04/2025 18:07

Toothpaste?

You'll need a tad more than 100ml for 5 people for a week in Spain in summer!!!

DuesToTheDirt · 03/04/2025 18:07

100ml per bottle, in a clear plastic bag. As many bottles as you can fit in the bag, but my local airport only allows one clear bag per passenger. They also have some scanners that don't need you to put them in bags, but some that do, so you need to be prepared anyway.

Probably easier to buy the suncream at the airport unless it’s very specialist.

It would be per case . There's 5 cases . Will get toothpaste there . I'm only taking sun cream incase they don't have the factor we need .

Just buy it in Boots after security.

The sun cream itself doesn't have to be in a see through bottle, but the bottle should be labelled as 100ml quantity, or less.

CleanShirt · 03/04/2025 18:22

100ml of suncream per person won't last you an entire holiday. Just buy it the other end. Other places sell Nivea etc.
