How would you deal with this - not picking up dog mess

HorrorFan81 · 02/04/2025 09:14

I go on daily walks near my house. Several times now I have seen a man walking 2 dogs, neither of them on leads. They trail far behind him and he doesn't seem to check on them - guess he trusts that they are following
Three times now I've seen one of the dogs pooing on the path or on the grass just to the side. The guy doesn't see it so doesn't pick it up. Each time he's been too far away for me to easily get his attention

Would you say something next time you see him?

Wait to see one of the dogs pooing again and get his attention (I'd probably have to run after him / yell as loudly as I could)

Other??

I would yell 'excuse me! your dog's done a poo!' as loudly as I could while they were doing it.

Are you in a town or city? Yeh that’s pretty gross I’d grab him if you see and tell him you’ve seen his dogs and he needs to carry poo bags.

Video it and send it to your local council. Ours fine people - yes they actively investigate and try to identify from images.

Offer him a poo bag the next time you come close enough to speak to him. I have done this before and it shamed the woman into picking it up.

This goes on where I live, I regularly pick up other dogs mess with my own dogs.
Don't know what the answer is. I only ever let mine off lead after he's done a poo, for this reason.

This is what my gut is telling me to do but he's so far away I honestly dont know if he'd hear. I can try though. Drives me mad

Am in a city but its a green area round a lake. There are paths but people often go onto the grass verges eg to get round a group so it could easily be stood in

For those saying pick it up / offer a poo bag - I don't have a dog so don't carry them and dont really want to start

Thanks I did think about that today but by the time I got my phone out he'd disappeared round a corner. He is honestly SO far in front of the dogs

Exactly this, I do it often 🤦🏻‍♀️

I asked about town etc city just as we are rural here and wouldn’t really worry out on country not busy trial. It’s a stick and flick, but even in that situation we keep an eye out on our dogs and move the mess to the hedges.

but what you describe yes I’d be 100% saying “oi”

Nannyfannybanny · 02/04/2025 09:41

I have 2 dogs, always had dogs, always pick up! I've been there,we have open plan gardens, watched someone keep letting their dog on a lead come and pee in our garden, then poo, she scooped it up,it was on my fancy dahlias, but you can't remove the smell for other dogs..I did the calling out to 2 separate owners, dogs off lead...near the local beach, I got rounded on and a pile of abuse
I'm in my 70s it was terrifying. We get a lot of dog poo in our front garden.

I think many dog owners purposely don't pay attention so they don't have to clean anything up, see it all the time

It does feel like that is what this guy is doing - I've literally never seen him turn around to check on the dogs or anything so there is no way he can see them making the mess. But he must realise they are doing it at some point on the walk

I think this too - but I reckon they have mostly convinced themselves that they haven't done anything wrong because they haven't seen it. So they are more likely to be shamed into picking it up if told than the ones who stand there and watch their dogs do it.

I dont have a dog either - that is the point. That you carry the bags to embarrass others that should be carrying them.

"I have bags in case dog owners 'forget' them" goes down well 😁

100%

It happens all the time where I live. Always people my age (middle aged up to 65ish) seem to be conveniently blinkered, never see young ones ignore poo, or the over 70s

I'm not condoning what that guy is doing, but are you sure the dogs are having a poo? I have a bitch (always had dogs before) and she squats low down for a wee. I've been shouted at by people for not picking up and have to point out the little puddle she's left, not a poo. I always pick up poos.

Yes, I was v close to the dog today and it definitely did a poo.

Yes, I’ve done so several times. I usually carry poo bags as well so they’ve got no excuse as I’ll give them one 😬

Tell Jim there has been a spate of people snatching xxx breed of dog under peoples noses and he should be careful

Honestly can't imagine how long it would take for him to notice if someone took one or both of them. Honestly never seen him turn around and I've seen him a few times now

I don't think it's even that calculated with many tbh, they just don't think about it full stop, it doesn't occur to them, because they switch off from the dog when they're 'walking' it and aren't engaged at all. They usually think they're amazing owners as well, the type that shout "He's friendly!" When you're faced with a hackles up barking dog that's being dominant, but the tail is wagging so they think it's all good.
They're the ones with dogs that chase sheep and and are 'devastated' when they get shot because 'He's never done that before', or when they bite someone and "They're the friendliest dog you could meet! Never hurt a fly!" - the owners just don't put the time or effort in to train the dog or even understand their own dogs body language.

The one around here is usually 10 minutes behind his two and quite often no where to be seen, to the point one of them jumped in my car as I was unloading shopping one day and didn't want to get out until he wandered along and thought it was funny. Was tempted to shut it in and drive to the local rescue and hand it in!

I've got 2 of my own, I'm not a dog hater, but there's too many people who just let their dogs do exactly what they please and it impacts on the rest of us to an unacceptable level.
