Do you still have a landline in your home?

BigJanette · 31/03/2025 21:23

We do, but disconnected awhile ago when redecorating the hall. Just realised we never bothered to plug it back in now when doing online banking, and one of the contact numbers was the landline!

Both my parents and in-laws still do.

Yes. We have actually got two because DH needed a different number for WFH.

We live rurally and have no mobile signal. We recently got wifi calling via the Internet which makes life a lot easier.

rosemarble · 31/03/2025 22:02

My router is connected to the landline, but no phone. We don’t have full fibre where I live.

My brothers landline is called the Batphone by my niece and nephew because the old bats use it to ring my sister in law

Everyone else used the mobile

Wow, how bloody rude of your niece and nephew. Confused Calling the older women in the family 'old bats.' Your brother should be ashamed for not pulling them up on this, and stopping them!

(And it is aimed at the women, because they wouldn't call men 'old bats.')

BatchCookBabe · 31/03/2025 22:04

In answer too your question @BigJanette (The OP.)

Yes we still have our landline. No plans to get rid yet. Live deep in the sticks, and sometimes the mobile phone signal drops out. (Although one of us can usually get a signal, even if one of us can't.) More than anything though we need a landline for the internet. Still not got the type that can go without it. Just signed with our provider for another year, and the package includes the landline. We will very likely not get rid of it until it actually becomes obsolete. (We will have a VOIP one though, because as I said, the mobile phone sometimes fails.)

We hope to never lose the internet AND have no mobile phone signal, (when the landline goes and we are stuck with VOIP,) or we'll be screwed if we need to contact someone in an emergency. Never had a point where we can't contact anyone yet. Then again, we've never had a time when we have no landline. It's a lifeline to many, and the idea of them being gone forever scares me a little bit. 😬

nocoolnamesleft · 31/03/2025 22:07

Yes. That way when I'm oncall the hospital can contact me on my own mobile, my work mobile (different network), or my landline. That's about as safe as I can make it.

Just think, this generation of kids will never know the joys of sitting on the stairs, stretching the phone cord as far as it will go.
Or hear the tell tale click of an annoying sibling picking up the second phone, trying to listen in on your calls.
Or trying to remember to hang up before the hour was up to get free calls.
Or dialling 1471 to find out the last number called 🤣

My gran had a phone table and chair in the hall, where she would sit to make/receive calls. She continued this even when my father bought her a cordless phone. She died a few years after mobiles became a big thing, but called them electric phones...

stayathomer · 31/03/2025 22:08

No, but I really wish they were still a thing, was thinking today if anything happened is so much easier, eg you collapse in work and employer needs to contact someone to let them know or your battery goes. We used to get free landline calls (as in free calls from a landline) with our internet provider but we let it go when the deal ran out!

TheDogsMother · 31/03/2025 22:11

We do as there wasn’t an option not to have when we renewed our contract. It is now plugged into the router so we are screwed in the event of a power cut. I believe it is possible to get a back up battery which I must look into.

For those with dodgy mobile signals at home have you tried the Wi-Fi calling setting on your mobile ? Absolute game changer for us.

I thought it was funny. I wouldn't take the least offence at being called an old bat. In my family we all call each other names affectionately.

Ytwi · 31/03/2025 22:16

Technically have a line in, but no actual phone in it and I couldn’t tell you what the number was even if my life depended on it, as never been used since we moved in years ago

SkeletonBatsflyatnight · 31/03/2025 22:16

We do. Even with WiFi calling, our mobiles aren't reliable everywhere in the house and dh needs to be contactable by phone the nights when he's on call. Gets used a handful of times a year max though.

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 31/03/2025 22:16

I do because when we need to call 111 the landline immediately connects to the correct local team, whereas from a mobile it gets triaged nationally and can take longer to get through the process.

minnienono · 31/03/2025 22:19

No though we do technically have a number, it’s voice over internet here

ThisPinkBee · 31/03/2025 22:21

It doesn't work and I have failed to investigate why. Every time I pick it up - which is mainly to dial my lost mobile in the house - it just gives a flat tone, so I put it back.

I don't even know if I'm still paying for it - need to look into it.

saltandvinegarchipsticks · 31/03/2025 22:22

No, not for years

Gundogday · 31/03/2025 22:22

No. Disconnected it just before Christmas. Kinda felt sad when it happened - end of an era.

Growlybear83 · 31/03/2025 22:25

Yes we do. Our mobile reception is very poor and we have to stand outside to make calls unless it’s connected to the wifi, but that’s really unreliable as well.

Showdogworkingdog · 31/03/2025 22:27

Yes. Think it was cheaper but I only ever use it to call sky - sky supply my phone line in an overpriced package with the telly and broadband. The only time it ever rings it’s an automated call about an appointment for a woman I don’t know. No matter which option I select, the calls keep coming for her so I just ignore it and let it ring now. Should really sort that out but never get around to it. Even my DM only rings my mobile.

PermanentTemporary · 31/03/2025 22:28

No, didn't bother getting one when I moved two years ago. Was tired of having one tbh. It made it a bit tricky as my FIL is so reluctant to call a mobile, but he will email so I call him back.

Clearinguptheclutter · 31/03/2025 22:30

I believe there is a physical line and number but we don’t have a landline phone no

BigJanette · 31/03/2025 22:31

Aww I'd like your gran!
My in-laws have one of those padded cushion seat thing with a cabinet next to it for the phone to sit on, which has a cubby hole under it for the phone directory!
Remember those, actually flicking through one to search for the number of your local takeaway, or a plumber.
That's another thing we don't get anymore.
Ooh feeling nostalgic now.
Might get one of those seat/cabinet thing myself, and buy a proper vintage dialling phone, where you have to wait for the dial to go back to 0 before dialling the next number 😂

Ah yes! My gran did the same, I spent many happy hours talking to her from across the country when I was in college and working in my first job. She got a cordless one after that.

We had one in our last house as it came free with the broadband but rarely used it, none now for the last 8 years. Even my 84 year old Dad has gotten rid of his, the line kept coming down with storms in the winter.

Nourishinghandcream · 31/03/2025 22:32

Yes but it is VOIP which is part of our BB package.

Prefer to make calls on it as I refuse to use HF and cannot tuck my mobile into my shoulder, it has to be held. With the VOIP phone, it can be tucked into my shoulder and allow me to do other things whilst talking.

BigJanette · 31/03/2025 22:33

That was meant to tag @WooleyMunky but MN refreshed itself and untagged 🙄
