Can you take diazepam and propanolol together?

I'm having a really bad panic attack. I took 10mg propanolol around an hour n half ago to try and help the shaking which helped a little but not much and then I realised I still have 2mg diazepam left in the drawer, can I take one or should I wait a certain length of time? I've never taken them even in the same day before.

Not sure. Have you tried Googling it.

I have, but didn't really get a straight answer.

Ring your local crisis team to talk it through? They should be able to tell you but also offer some support to get through this. Hope it passes soon.

I'm in northern Ireland so no idea who the crisis team is. I wouldn't say I'm in a crisis, I have suffered panic attacks for about 15 years off/on.

Can you ask someone you know to call a pharmacy and ask? Presuming you're not up for making the call yourself. Really hope you feel better soon x

ALittleBitAhAh · 31/03/2025 19:50

Sorry, it's what we call the out of hours MH team (you don't have to be open to them to call). I'd imagine there were similar services where at least you'd be speaking to a professional rather than randoms on the Internet was my thinking.

Edited as I let bits out of my sentence!

I don't think there would be any open at this time of the evening. Ours close at 6pm in northern Ireland but thanks for the suggestion.

I was on 80mg sr propranolol for panic attacks and was prescribed a weeks worth of 2mg diazepam for extreme back pain.

Smartiepants79 · 31/03/2025 20:17

That’s a very low dose of propanalol. You could try a bit more of that without any issues I would think. A quick google does suggest that the two drugs should be fine together. Especially with such a low propanol dose.

zebrazoop · 31/03/2025 20:20

Yes you can. I do regularly

pleasepackitin · 31/03/2025 20:28

Go on that drugs checker website, it tells you interactions between medications

verysmellyjelly · 31/03/2025 20:30

It should be fine unless you have a pre existing heart condition that makes your heart slow or your heart rhythm irregular, or if you have a history of conditions like that in the family. In that case it would be better not to risk it without very carefully checking with a doctor or pharmacist.

Ahsheeit · 31/03/2025 20:49

Take some more propranolol. I take 40mg if I'm getting panicky.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 31/03/2025 20:50

You can definitely take them together.

Crisis Team in NI is the home treatment team.
But yes. You can take diazepam and propranolol together. Especially at such low doses.

Realisation14 · 31/03/2025 21:37

Thanks everyone, I took the diazepam about 40 mins ago after a few posters saying I definitely could, so ended up being nearly 3hrs after I took the propanolol anyway so I'm sure that would be an okay gap. And as PP said both are low doses of the meds and not taken regularly.

Bless. It’s AWFUL isn’t. You aren’t alone. It’s just anxiety and I say this not to minimise it at all as I know how horrible they are. But I find if I almost lean into it and understand it, rather than try to push against it, it passes faster
the thing that hurts you isn’t the stimulus but the panic itself.
breathe deeply. Know this is your body having a normal but out of proportion reaction.

modern life has fucked us a bit. But we can and will survive and thrive. Sending so much love and hugs.

That’s Lifeline. They’re more like a suicide helpline. They aren’t our out of hours mental health service . And they don’t offer any advice on medication.

I realised this myself when I googled it.

Are you currently open to community mental health team?

How are you feeling today OP? Has the anxiety lessened any for you? If your current medication isn’t managing, there’s scope for increasing your dose.
Im on 80mg Propranolol SR daily, 10mg wouldn’t have touched the sides for me.
