Can you take diazepam and propanolol together?

I'm having a really bad panic attack. I took 10mg propanolol around an hour n half ago to try and help the shaking which helped a little but not much and then I realised I still have 2mg diazepam left in the drawer, can I take one or should I wait a certain length of time? I've never taken them even in the same day before.

Are you currently open to community mental health team?

How are you feeling today OP? Has the anxiety lessened any for you? If your current medication isn’t managing, there’s scope for increasing your dose.
Im on 80mg Propranolol SR daily, 10mg wouldn’t have touched the sides for me.

No I'm not, just with my GP. I'm on citalopram 20mg and have the 10mg propanolol to take as and when needed up to 3x per day. I just go through these phases where my anxiety gets really bad and my usual techniques do fuck all.

The diazepam really helped last night and got me to sleep but I've woke this morning and the anxiety is there with a vengeance.

Could you ring the GP and ask for same day phone appointment? They should be able to increase your dose.

Of the propanolol?

Yes. They’re much more likely to increase the propranolol than the diazepam to be honest. Diazepam is generally given as a short term measure these days.
There are options other than propranolol, but as a first line, they’re likely to increase a medication you’re already on rather than introduce a new one.
Hope you get sorted OP. Anxiety and panic attacks are truly horrendous. Mine have ramped up shockingly since becoming peri menopausal

I am literally dreading peri and menopause for this exact reason. I'm only 36 at the minute but I know it's going to get me.

Thank you I will speak to the doctor about the propanolol. Diazepam works better but I know it's highly addictive, I don't take it that often, the usually give me just one strip of 14 per year of the 2mg.

Just so you know, OP, there are a few other options for anxiety you still probably haven’t tried. Not trying to suggest you start any new meds right now since as mentioned, you’re on a low dose and it’s very likely that just increasing that will be a big help! But I know for me, one of the things that helps me manage my symptoms (both physical and MH) is knowing there are still plenty of things to try. I can immediately think of several that are reasonably easy to access and that you quite likely haven’t tried yet (you may have done but they are not so likely to be first options). Just wanted to mention this in case it helps at all!

When my anxiety has increased, I've had both the citalopram and propanol increased, both to 40mg and that really helped.

Thank you, I do worry about increasing the citalopram because I had horrific side effects when I started on 10mg and then again when I increased to 20mg 2.5 months later so I'm not sure I'm in a place right now where I could tolerate the side effects because one was a massive increase in anxiety. At least with the propanolol I didn't get any side effects so I'd be willing to increase that at the moment.

How are you doing this evening?

MagicalMystical · 01/04/2025 21:38

I find this meditation really helps me. I listen to it shaking/shuddering in bed with the panic attack symptoms but by the end I’m either much more calm or (more often) asleep.

@MagicalMystical thank you for asking, still quite on edge but no where near the same level I was last night thank god. I went on a long walk this evening with my son and that helped a good chunk.

Oh what meditation, do you have a link?

A walk sounds good! Glad it helped. The link was in the message but here it is again:

Body scan meditation - Jon Kabat Zinn

Hope this helps you as much as it helps me. We’re all different with what works for us, aren’t we. Worth giving it a try anyway. Hope you feel better today.

Realisation14 · 02/04/2025 10:31

Thank you I will give that a try. Unfortunately still very anxious and panicky today. When I get like this it tends to last for weeks or even months and I'm not even sure why.
