Do you tend to go back to work immediately the next day? Or do you take another day of Annual Leave just to relax at home?

Usually go straight back to work the next day. Leave is precious and it would be a waste for me. Although the latest I ever got back was 3am and I was wfh the next day so I didn’t have to leave the house!
in a few weeks we will be going away and getting back hopefully about 6/7pm. Will be in the office the next day.

MeAndMyGhost · 30/03/2025 18:31

Always come back a day early to get myself sorted, washing/grocery shopping done. I hate the rush of getting home (travel long haul so arrival times can be odd) and then having to face the thought of going to work the next day, it sort of stresses me out if I'm still on holiday knowing I've got to go to work the next day?

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 30/03/2025 19:52

I’ve landed at Gatwick at 11pm and been in work for 9am. It wouldn’t occur to me to take another day off, I need my A/L

Echobelly · 30/03/2025 19:54

Usually I go to work straight after but this year I'm taking an extra day as its a fairly short holiday and I thought I'd do it this year for decompression, laundry etc

CarpetKnees · 30/03/2025 20:28

Also depends if you are flying back from Spain or New Zealand.

offmynut · 30/03/2025 20:48

I do graveyard shifts so i have an extra day off that is still my leave.
If its not a long flight i book the early flights home so i can get back to work that night and start to save for the next trip.
Im off tuesday to spain cant wait.

MinnieCoops · 30/03/2025 20:50

I try and get back on a Friday if I can

Darkclothes · 30/03/2025 20:53

Depends on the time zone difference where I've been, flight time, how long I've been away etc!

If I was in New Zealand a month, I'd leave several days buffer before work. If I'd been in Spain for 4 days, I could fly in the day beforehand and start work the next day.

TY78910 · 30/03/2025 20:53

Depends on day / length of flight.
if I was jet lagged, absolutely, I’d even take two if there was a substantial time zone difference.
if it’s a short haul and I have a morning flight then no, I’d go back to work the next day.
if it’s a short haul but late flight, I would

minnienono · 30/03/2025 20:54

Don’t get enough annual leave for that luxury

yes definitely this! I tend to be more on the Spain length of travel and time difference than New Zealand hence going to work the next day 😂

Strangely, you used the exact country examples I did. Cross post and I didn't see yours before replying up thread!

minnienono · 30/03/2025 20:55

I’ve got back at 6.30am on the overnight transatlantic flight and been in work by 11am in the midlands!

Aposterhasnoname · 30/03/2025 20:56

I need every minute of my AL for going on holiday, I’m not wasting it taking a day off to recover. Whenever possible we try and arrange things so we get home on a Saturday though, then we get the Sunday off before going back to work.

reluctantbrit · 30/03/2025 21:06

We normally do Saturday to Saturday so we have the Sunday off

This year we return on a Sunday late and I do have the Monday off but DD has to leave Tuesday for a camp and we need the time to ensure all important things are re-packed.

SagittariusDwarf · 30/03/2025 21:07

Never book an extra day of AL for the day after a holiday. Have been known to do an overnight flight and work same day as landing at 5am or whatever, or fly back in the morning if a short enough flight, having booked that morning as a half day, then work the afternoon. I live pretty close to both Heathrow and Gatwick so this is do-able

hjokhjjjkkkd · 30/03/2025 21:09

We mostly holiday in the US and I tend to go back to work at the earliest opportunity, even if it’s the next day. I find it helps jet lag to go straight back into routine and I like to preserve leave as far as possible.

ShaunaSadeki · 30/03/2025 21:11

DH always books and extra day, I never do, but I WFH. However, we go back from Australia at 10pm on a Sunday, I definitely should have booked an extra day off, I am sure it made my jet lag 10x worse

This!

user1494050295 · 30/03/2025 21:14

If flying in from Australia it’s straight to work and school to get over the jet lag faster. Works a treat, my boss knows I will be comped til about 3pm and then I head home

Mumsntfan1 · 30/03/2025 21:15

Straight back to work. In the days before WFH this meant a shower at the airport then to the office!

Mademetoxic · 30/03/2025 21:48

Definitely an extra day or so!

If the flight is delayed you're basically screwed anyway.

JacqFrost · 30/03/2025 21:51

Depends what time we fly back in. Preferably I take the day off after but if it's our local airport flight in early I will go in the next day. London airport I will certainly take the next day off.
