Infected chickenpox help please!

My four year old has terribly infected chickenpox. After three visits to the doctors we final have oral antibiotics

But it was DH that took her and forgot to ask any questions. Should I clean them? Should I cover them? They are so sore and red.

My DD had the same, awful infected spots on her neck and chest. We were just given oral antibiotics, she wouldn't let us anywhere near her skin to wipe or put cream as they hurt her so much so just had to wait for the medication to kick in. We were told to keep up the calpol for pain and fever. I hope your little one is better soon.

Make sure you don't give ibuprofen as a painkiller, it's not recommended for chicken pox. Try oats in a sock under running water for a bath to soothe it while you wait for the antibiotics to kick in.

I'd clean with soap and water and allow to air dry

Only cover if weeping

Thanks all. Her vest had weeping on it this morning.

She's on Calpol, not giving ibuprofen. She couldn't sleep last night from discomfort.

They look so sore..I had no idea it could be this bad.

I don't want to scare you but please familiarise yourself with the symptoms of cellulitis, my DS had mild chicken pox that then got infected, he was on antibiotics but woke up on day 3 of them with red, hot skin around the infected areas. Straight to hospital where he spent 4 days on a drip whilst they watched for signs of sepsis. I couldn't believe the speed of them getting infected then cellulitis taking hold.

Seeline · 31/03/2025 11:39

Mine found warm baths with a good dose of bicarb in very soothing. DD was having 3 or 4 a day at her worst.

I'm concerned about this..it doesn't seem to be getting worse and a Dr saw her on Saturday and gave her antibiotics. We are day 12 now.

I’m not a doctor, I have had cellulitis before. The red ring around the scab looks like cellulitis.

Do you have a children’s A&E you can take her to?

IV antibiotics. She's sad and in pain but I'm hopeful we are on the way up now.

Myengagementring · 31/03/2025 18:11

Was it cellulitis? IV antibiotics worked really quickly for my son. Hope you are ok?

TheTwirlyPoos · 31/03/2025 21:10

They didn't say it was by said they were badly infected. She's come home with a cannula god love her to go in tomorrow for more IV. My heart breaks for her, keep thinking a out what we can do when she's better to treat her. She's been through it.

Thanks so much for your help and advice.

Poor baby 😔 glad she’s had IV antibiotics, I hope she’s feeling better soon.

MattSaracenQB1 · 31/03/2025 21:51

I hope she feels better soon. One of my kids was quite ill with a childhood illness and it was helpful to have photos to look back on to talk about it so perhaps take some photos tomorrow. I found the next time they were ill they were very afraid so maybe talking about how rare it is for an illness to go bad like this.

coxesorangepippin · 01/04/2025 03:02

Ah that's for the best op

Hope she feels better soon, little dot

It's so hard when they are sick

OhamIreally · 01/04/2025 07:06

So sorry to hear about your daughter. I do think the chicken pox vaccine should be included in childhood vaccinations.

Mickeychampionwhatgoodami · 01/04/2025 08:01

Oh that looked so painful
Hopefully she's on the mend soon.

TheTwirlyPoos · 02/04/2025 21:13

Just to update the infection has progressed and we've now been admitted. Both exhausted.

Oh no that's where we ended up, DS was in for 4 days but perked up quick after been admitted

TheTwirlyPoos · 04/04/2025 21:53

Just an update from me.

Last night they had to do a second cannula because the other one just failed due to overuse.

Today the second one blocked. They decided that they didn't want to put her through a third cannulation so they have sent us home with a shed load of utterly vile tasting meds

I'm so pleased to be home.

OP posts:
RippedJeansAndCashmere · 05/04/2025 01:46

I laughed at how silly that sounds, but it must be worrying for you to know that having a blocked cannula, of all things, was the deciding factor in sending her home.

I hope she continues to get better.
